Montaigu, Vendée

The Battle of Montaigu was a battle on 21 September 1793 during the War in the Vendée, in which the Vendéens were victorious.

Montaigu-Vendée (French pronunciation: [mɔ̃tɛɡy vɑ̃de]) is a commune in the Vendée department in the Pays de la Loire region in western France. The municipality was established on January 1, 2019 by the merger of the communes of Boufféré, La Guyonnière, Montaigu, Saint-Georges-de-Montaigu and Saint-Hilaire-de-Loulay.

The canton of Montaigu-Vendée (before 2021: Montaigu) is an administrative division of the Vendée department, western France. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Montaigu-Vendée.It consists of the following communes:

Communauté d'agglomération Terres de Montaigu is the communauté d'agglomération, an intercommunal structure, centred on the town of Montaigu-Vendée. It is located in the Vendée department, in the Pays de la Loire region, western France. Created in 2017, its seat is in Montaigu-Vendée. Its area is 379.3 km2. Its population was 49,428 in 2019, of which 20,424 in Montaigu-Vendée proper.

Saint-Georges-de-Montaigu (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ ʒɔʁʒ də mɔ̃tɛgy], literally Saint Georges of Montaigu) is a former commune in the Vendée department in the Pays de la Loire region in western France. On 1 January 2019, it was merged into the new commune Montaigu-Vendée.

The Château de la Preuille is an 11th-century castle at Saint-Hilaire-de-Loulay, Vendée, France, one of the oldest châteaux in the Loire Valley.It took its present form in the 13th and 15th centuries. The wide moat defending the northern aspect of the walls and towers indicates its origins as a stronghold. From 1350, the castle was owned successively by the families of Boux, Bastard (1460), Gastiniere (1541), Pâris (including Claude-René Pâris de Soulanges, comte de Soulanges) (1728), and through the late 18th century, the family of D’Nacquart or De Nacquard.In 1832, Marie-Caroline of Bourbon, Duchess of Berry, visited the château to launch her coup against King Louis-Philippe in order to crown her son Henri, comte de Chambord, the last legitimate Bourbon. The coup failed and Marie-Caroline was arrested.During the 20th century, the castle was abandoned and was left in a state of disrepair. It was saved and restored by the Fradin family in the 1970s and 1980s. Renovation was continued by the family Ribow between 2003 and 2019.
