Porlezza is a comune (municipality) on Lake Lugano in the Province of Como in the Italian region Lombardy, located about 60 kilometres (37 mi) north of Milan and about 25 kilometres (16 mi) north of Como. Porlezza borders the following municipalities: Bene Lario, Carlazzo, Claino con Osteno, Corrido, Lenno, Ossuccio, Ponna, Val Rezzo, Valsolda. Between 1873 and 1939, Porlezza was linked to Menaggio, on Lake Como, by the Menaggio–Porlezza railway, a steam hauled narrow gauge line built as part of a multi-modal transport link between Menaggio and Luino, on Lake Maggiore.

As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 2,838 and an area of 12.7 square kilometres (4.9 sq mi). Carlazzo borders the following municipalities: Bene Lario, Corrido, Cusino, Grandola ed Uniti, Porlezza, San Bartolomeo Val Cavargna, San Nazzaro Val Cavargna, Val Rezzo.

The Moltrasio Formation also known as the Lombardische Kieselkalk Formation is a geological formation in Italy and Switzerland. This Formation mostly developed in the Lower or Middle Sinemurian stage of the Lower Jurassic, where on the Lombardian basin tectonic activity modified the current marine and terrestrial habitats. Here it developed a series of marine-related depositional settings, represented by an outcrop of 550–600 m of grey Calcarenites and Calcilutites with chert lenses and marly interbeds, that recovers the Sedrina, Moltrasio and Domaro Formations. This was mostly due to the post-Triassic crisis, that was linked locally to tectonics. The Moltrasio Formation is considered a continuation of the Sedrina Limestone and the Hettangian Albenza Formation, and was probably a shallow water succession, developed on the passive margin of the westernmost Southern Alps. It is known due to the exquisite preservation observed on the Outcrop in Osteno, where several kinds of marine biota have been recovered.

Val Rezzo (Comasco: Val Rezz [ˌʋal ˈrɛts]) is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Como in the Italian region Lombardy, located about 70 kilometres (43 mi) north of Milan and about 30 kilometres (19 mi) north of Como, on the border with Switzerland. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 202 and an area of 6.6 square kilometres (2.5 sq mi). Val Rezzo borders the following municipalities: Bogno (Switzerland), Carlazzo, Cavargna, Certara (Switzerland), Cimadera (Switzerland), Corrido, Porlezza, San Nazzaro Val Cavargna, Valsolda.

Claino con Osteno (Comasco: Scin Osten [ˌʃĩː uˈstẽː]) is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Como in the Italian region of Lombardy, located about 60 kilometres (37 mi) north of Milan and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) north of Como. It is a small comune on Lake Lugano, composed of a series of small frazioni (hamlets): the biggest ones (Claino and Osteno) have been chosen for the municipal name. Claino con Osteno borders the following municipalities: Alta Valle Intelvi, Laino, Ponna, Porlezza, Valsolda. Near Osteno is a site with numerous late-Jurassic fossils characterized by integral fossilization, including the Squaloraja polyspondyla.

As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 264 and an area of 6.0 square kilometres (2.3 sq mi).Ponna borders the following municipalities: Claino con Osteno, Colonno, Laino, Ossuccio, Porlezza, Sala Comacina.

The Cima di Fojorina (also spelled Cima di Fiorina) is a mountain of the Lugano Prealps, located on the border between Switzerland and Italy. It lies on the range separating the Val Colla from Lake Lugano.
