Monachil is a municipality in the province of Granada, Spain. As of 2018, it has a population of 7,826 inhabitants. It lies around 8 km from the city of Granada. It borders the municipalities of Huétor Vega, Cenes de la Vega, Pinos Genil, Güéjar Sierra, Dílar, La Zubia and Cájar. Within the municipality of Monachil there are three distinct population centres: the old village, often referred to as Monachil Pueblo, the newer Barrio de la Vega and Pradollano, the resort village at the Sierra Nevada Ski Station. The ski station hosted the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1996, the 2015 Winter Universiade, and the FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships 2017. The name Monachil comes from the Arabic منستير (monastir), a word of Greek origin meaning "monastery".

The Taifa of Granada (Arabic: طائفة غرناطة, Ta'ifat Gharnata) or Zirid Kingdom of Granada was a Berber Muslim kingdom that was formed in al-Andalus in 1013 following the deposition of Caliph Hisham II in 1009. The kingdom was centered on Granada, its capital, and it also extended its control to Málaga for a period. Four kings succeeded each other during its nearly 80 years of existence, all of them belonging to an offshoot of the Zirid dynasty of North Africa, a Sanhaja Berber clan. The Taifa of Granada was considered to be the wealthiest out of all of the taifa kingdoms. It was eventually conquered by the Almoravids in 1090, putting an end to Zirid rule in Granada.

It is located directly east of and uphill from the Alhambra palace complex in Granada, Spain.

The Torre de la Cautiva (Spanish: Torre de la Cautiva, lit. 'tower of the captive [woman]') is a tower in the walls of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. It is one of several towers along the Alhambra's northern wall which were converted into a small palatial residence in the 14th century. It is considered an exceptional example of Nasrid domestic architecture from this period.: 195

The Palace of the Convent of San Francisco (Spanish: Palacio del Convento de San Francisco) or Palace of the ex-Convent of San Francisco (Spanish: Palacio del Exconvento de San Francisco) is a former medieval Nasrid palace in the Alhambra of Granada, Spain, which was transformed into a Franciscan convent after the Spanish conquest of Granada. By the early 20th century it had fallen into ruins and it was significantly restored under the direction of Leopoldo Torres Balbás in the 1920s. Since 1945, it serves as a state-owned Parador hotel.

Site of the exquisite neo-classical Summer palace of an 18th-century archbishop of Granada, Don José Manuel Moscoso y Peralta, (1723–1811), an important figure in the history of Peru, the near-vicinity of Víznar was the place of execution, in 1936, of the noted Spanish poet, Federico García Lorca, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

Píñar is a municipality located in the province of Granada, Spain. It is located at 46 km from Granada, and 11 km from Iznalloz, capital of the Comarca of Los Montes. It is home to the ruins of a large castle (likely founded by the Romans, and later re-used by the Moors), declared national monument, and to the Cuevas de las Ventanas, a group of caves. The Carigüela archaeological site is also located within the communal territory. Its sister city is Tetuán, Morocco.
