Doshisha University (同志社大学, Dōshisha daigaku), also referred to as Dodai (同大, Dōdai), is a private university in Kyoto City, Japan. Doshisha University is one of the most prestigious universities in Japan today, with particularly strong influence in the Kansai region, and is considered one of the most selective private universities in Japan. The acceptance rate for the 40,924 applicants for the 2014 academic year was 35.6%, with acceptance rate in some departments under 15%. In 2013, the university was ranked fourth among Japanese private universities for "schools to which parents wish to send their child", following Waseda University, Keio University, Meiji University and eleventh for "hidden prestigious schools that you know", following Waseda University, Keio University, Meiji University and so on. Doshisha University has the highest deviation value as a private university in the Kansai region.Established in 1875, it is one of Japan's oldest private institutions of higher learning, and has approximately 30,000 students enrolled on four different campuses in Kyoto. It is one of the Japanese "Global 30" universities and one university belonging to "Kan-Kan-Do-Rits" (関関同立), a group of the four leading private universities in western Japan's Kansai region also including Kansai University, Kwansei Gakuin University, and Ritsumeikan University.

Kamigyō-ku (上京区, かみぎょうく) is one of the eleven wards in the city of Kyoto, in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. The ward was a district of residences for the royalty, aristocrats and upper classes in the old capital of JapanーHeian-kyō. Located in the center of the present-day city of Kyoto, Japan, it previously occupied the northern region of the ancient capital of Kyoto. The Kamo River flows on the eastern border of the ward. The ward is home to the Kyoto Imperial Palace, the Kitano Tenmangu Shinto shrine, the Seimei shrine, nishijin-ori textiles, and the headquarters of the Omotesenke and Urasenke schools of Japanese tea ceremony. As of 2020, Kamigyō-ku had a population of 83,832 people. The Masugata Shōtengai Shopping District, is the setting of the 2013 anime series, Tamako Market, produced by Kyoto Animation.

Shōkoku-ji (相国寺), formally identified as Mannen-zan Shōkoku Shōten Zenji (萬年山相國承天禅寺), is a Buddhist temple in northern Kyoto, first founded in 1382 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, with the existing temple complex having undergone several periods of extensive reconstruction and rebuilding in the succeeding eras.

Doshisha Women's College of Liberal Arts (同志社女子大学, Dōshisha joshi daigaku) is a private women's college in Kyotanabe, Kyoto, Japan. The predecessor of the school was founded in 1876, and it was chartered as a university in 1949.

The Revolt of Ashikaga Yoshiaki (Japanese: 足利義昭の乱) was a revolt staged by Ashikaga Yoshiaki in 1573. Yoshiaki was the 15th Shogun of Japan and a member of the Ashikaga clan who became the shogun in 1568, Yoshiaki gained power after he enlisted Oda Nobunaga to help him in his goal to become the shogun, the Oda clan armies entered Kyoto thus re-establishing the Muromachi shogunate. The seize of power was quick because there was no effective central authority in Kyoto at the time. Yoshiaki was used as a Puppet leader by Nobunaga who had direct control.In 1573 the revolt took place, Yoshiaki was extremely dissatisfied with his degree of power in the government and sought to challenge Nobunaga and assert control. Yoshiaki requested the aid of Takeda Shingen and the Takeda clan as well as the Matsunaga clan to help him in the revolt. Yoshiaki attempted to escape Kyoto and headed for Sakai where he wanted to take refuge. However Nobunaga pursued Yoshiaki and captured Kyoto which also effectively ended the rule of the Ashikaga clan.

The St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church (カトリック西陣聖ヨゼフ教会) is s a parish of the Roman Catholic Church in the Nishijin district of the city of Kyoto. It is the second oldest Catholic Church in Kyoto.

The Sarugatsuji (猿ヶ辻, lit. 'monkey's crossroads') is the northeast corner of the wall of the Kyoto Imperial Palace.

The Kyōto Imperial Palace (京都御所, Kyōto-gosho) is the former palace of the Emperor of Japan. Since the Meiji Restoration in 1869, the Emperors have resided at the Tokyo Imperial Palace, while the preservation of the Kyoto Imperial Palace was ordered in 1877. Today, the grounds are open to the public, and the Imperial Household Agency hosts public tours of the buildings several times a day. The Kyoto Imperial Palace is the latest of the imperial palaces built at or near its site in the northeastern part of the old capital of Heian-kyō (now known as Kyoto) after the abandonment of the larger original Heian Palace that was located to the west of the current palace during the Heian period. The Palace lost much of its function at the time of the Meiji Restoration, when the capital functions were moved to Tokyo in 1869. However, Emperor Taishō and Shōwa still had their enthronement ceremonies at the palace.

Shiramine Shrine (白峯神宮, Shiramine jingū) is a Shinto Shrine in Kamigyō-ku, KyotoThe Shrine is dedicated to the veneration of the kami of Emperor Junnin and Emperor Sutoku. Annually in mid–September two Noh performances are held at the Shiramine Shrine in memory of Emperor Sutoku.Shiramine is also home to the deity Seidai Myojin who is popularly known as the god of sports, and especially soccer. The lucky charm(叶う輪 Kanauwa) of Shiramine Shrine is very popular to worshipers. Kanauwa is Lucky charm of sports.

The Kinmon incident (禁門の変, Kinmon no Hen, "Forbidden Gate Incident" or "Imperial Palace Gate Incident"), also known as the Hamaguri Gate Rebellion (蛤御門の変, Hamaguri Gomon no Hen, "Hamaguri Imperial Gate Incident"), was a rebellion against the Tokugawa shogunate in Japan that took place on the 20th of August [lunar calendar: 19th day, 7th month], 1864, near the Imperial Palace in Kyoto.
