Before being incorporated as a city, it was the location of the Aurora Colony, a religious commune founded in 1856 by William Keil and John E. Schmit. William named the settlement after his daughter. The population was 1,133 at the 2020 Census. It is part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Aurora Colony, also called Aurora Mills, was a Christian utopian communal society founded in 1856 by William Keil in modern-day Aurora, Oregon, US. At its peak in 1868, the Aurora Colony had about 600 people and 15,000 acres (6,100 ha) of land. The colony, along with Keil's previously established Bethel colony, was formally dissolved in 1883. In 1974, about 150 acres (61 ha) and 12 buildings of the former colony were inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places as parts of the Aurora Colony Historic District.

It is owned by the Oregon Department of Aviation.Although most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, Aurora State Airport is assigned UAO by the FAA but has no designation from the IATA.Primarily a general aviation airport, Aurora has significant business aviation based at the field. In addition the airport serves as the home to two major aviation companies Van's Aircraft and Columbia Helicopters. On May 26, 2009, the Oregon State Legislature passed a resolution identifying the airport as Wes Lematta Field at Aurora State Airport. The late Wes Lematta was the founder of Columbia Helicopters located on the northeastern corner of the field.

Rock Creek Methodist Church is a historic Methodist church building in Needy, Oregon near Canby, Oregon. It was built in 1858 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.It was deemed notable as one of few remaining circuit church buildings from early Oregon. According to its NRHP nomination, "The simple elegance of this structure stands as an example of the unpretentious lives of early Oregon settlers."It is a one-story 20 by 24 feet (6.1 m × 7.3 m) building. John Killan led the construction. The vestibule was added in about 1920.

Mission Creek is a tributary, roughly 9 miles (14 km) long, of Champoeg Creek in Marion County in the U.S. state of Oregon. The creek arises southwest of St. Paul in the French Prairie region of the Willamette Valley and flows generally northeast to meet Champoeg Creek near Champoeg. The combined streams then flow less than 1 mile (1.6 km) before entering the Willamette River, 45 miles (72 km) from its confluence with the Columbia River.
