The Thuringian-Franconian Highlands (German: Thüringisch-Fränkische Mittelgebirge) are a natural region of Germany which is designated as D48 or 39 by the BfN. It consists mainly of a ridge of mountains up to just under 1,000 m high between the Central Upland areas of the Thuringian Forest, Thuringian Slate Mountains, Franconian Forest and Fichtel Mountains, and which runs from west and south Thuringia through Upper Franconia and southeast to just before the Czech border and the so-called Bohemian Massif.

The Mittelberg is an 803.6 m high (above sea level) mountain located in the Thuringian Highland, Thuringia (Germany). It is located close to the municipalities of Piesau and Lichte and the Leibis-Lichte Dam in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park. The section of the Rennsteig walkway between Neuhaus am Rennweg, Ernstthal am Rennsteig, and Spechtsbrunn runs close to the mountain.

Piesau is a village and a former municipality in the district of Sonneberg in Thuringia, Germany, close to the Thuringian Rennsteig. Formerly in the district Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, it is part of the town Neuhaus am Rennweg since January 2019. It has a glass factory and is known as glass-maker village. The first time glass was made in Piesau was in 1622. Up until today glass is the main reason of existence in Piesau. Carl Heinz Glass still produces glass, for instance for the cosmetics industry. The inventor of the first usable röntgenglass (Carl Heinrich Florenz Müller) descends from the village. Piesau lies next to the "Rennsteig", a hiking path of more than 160 kilometres throughout Thüringen. Before 2019, it was part of the municipal association Lichtetal am Rennsteig, which consists of the municipalities Lichte, Piesau, Reichmannsdorf, and Schmiedefeld.
