Great Balsam Mountains

Tanasee Bald, also called Tennessee Bald, is a mountain near the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina, on the Haywood/Transylvania border. It is 5561 feet high. It is in the Great Balsam Mountains within the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is part of the Appalachian Mountains Tanasee Bald is the southern limit of breeding of the northern saw-whet owl, which is from the boreal forests of Canada.

Saunook is an unincorporated community in Haywood County, North Carolina, United States. Saunook is located along US 74, west of Waynesville and east of Balsam.

Devil's Courthouse is a mountain in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina in the United States of America. The mountain is located at the Western edge of the Pisgah National Forest about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of Brevard and 28 miles (45 kilometers) southwest of Asheville. Located at milepost 422.4 (kilometer 679.8 km) of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Devil's Courthouse has a moderate/strenuous trail climbing a half mile to its peak where panoramic views can be seen.

Black Balsam Knob, also known as Black Balsam Bald, is in the Pisgah National Forest southwest of Asheville, North Carolina, near milepost 420 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is the second highest mountain in the Great Balsam Mountains. The Great Balsams are within the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are part of the Appalachian Mountains. It is the 23rd highest of the 40 mountains in North Carolina over 6000 feet.The top of the mountain is a grassy bald that affords a panoramic view. The origin of grassy balds in southern Haywood county is a result of extensive clear-cut logging and locomotive fires in 1925 and 1942. These fires burned deep down into the mineral-rich topsoil slowing reforestation or stopping it altogether. Examples of this can also be found on many of its neighboring peaks and ridges. These features contribute to the area's popularity, but foot traffic also causes some ecological damage to the ecosystem. The Art Loeb Trail follows the grassy ridge of Black Balsam Knob. Visible peaks from Black Balsam Knob include: Shining Rock in the Shining Rock Wilderness (3 miles northeast) Looking Glass Rock (5 miles southeast) Cold Mountain (6 miles north) Mount Pisgah (9.5 miles northeast) Mount Mitchell. On exceptionally clear days, Mount Mitchell, the highest point in the Eastern United States, is visible 45 miles north east.

Balsam Gap (el. 3,316 ft (1,011 m)) is a mountain pass between the Plott Balsam Range to the northwest and the Great Balsam Mountains to the southeast on the county line dividing Haywood and Jackson counties in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The gap allows both the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway and the former Murphy Branch of the Southern Railway, now owned by Blue Ridge Southern Railroad, to cross between the two counties running east–west. The Blue Ridge Parkway also runs through the gap in a north–south direction crossing both the expressway and railway branch. The gap is named for the Great Balsam Mountains in which it lies. The small, unincorporated communities of Balsam in Jackson County and Saunook in Haywood County are also located close by.

Green Hill Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in Waynesville, North Carolina, where the town's first doctors, lawyers, politicians, preachers, and business people are buried. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cemetery is owned and operated by the Town of Waynesville.Colonel James Robert Love, who donated the land and founded Waynesville and is a hero of the American Revolutionary War, is buried on the highest hill in the cemetery. The white chief of the Cherokee people, William Holland Thomas, is buried there. He was also the founder of Thomas' Legion, a group of local mountaineers and Cherokee who fought during the American Civil War in Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. This placed the cemetery on the North Carolina Civil Wars Trail.Some of the other notable pioneers are Congressmen James Moody and William T. Crawford and hotel owner and town promoter S. C. Satterthwaite. The cemetery hold the graves of individuals who succumbed to the Spanish flu of 1918. Buried there are five brothers who were Confederate soldiers that died during the American Civil War. William Greer, the chauffeur to five presidents, including John F. Kennedy on the day of his assassination, is buried at the cemetery.Thomas Wolfe's father, William Oliver Wolfe, was a tombstone supplier and provided the cemetery's eight pieces of "funeral art", made of stone imported from Italy. An old mill stone was used in the grave marker for Barber's Orchard owner, R.N. Barber. There are other distinctive artistic grave markers in the cemetery. Local author and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, Caroline Pafford Miller, is buried at Green Hill.

Waynesville is the county seat of Haywood County, North Carolina. It is the largest town in North Carolina west of Asheville. Waynesville is located about 30 miles (50 km) southwest of Asheville between the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains. As of the 2010 census, Waynesville had a population of 9,869. The town is located just outside the Pisgah National Forest and is close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Waynesville and Haywood County are part of the four-county Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area, currently the fifth largest metropolitan area in North Carolina. It is the third largest town in the MSA behind the cities of Asheville and Hendersonville.

Shelton House is a historic home located at Waynesville, Haywood County, North Carolina. The front section was built about 1878, with a later two-story rear wing. It features an engaged two-tier front porch and stepped-shoulder, gable end brick chimneys.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.Shelton House is now a historic house museum that features historic furnishings and decorative items, heritage crafts, agricultural exhibits, and items of today's crafters and artisans. The early 20th century barn includes antique farm tools. By 1918, the home was inhabited by William Taylor Shelton. Shelton spent 26 years as an instructor in Native American schools in North Carolina, Arizona, and New Mexico, including the Cherokee Indian School in Yellow Hill, North Carolina.

Balsam is an unincorporated community in Jackson County, North Carolina, United States. Named after the Balsam Mountains, it is home of the highest standard-gauge railroad east of the Rocky Mountains, at 3,315 feet (1,010 m). The community is located near Balsam Gap, a mountain pass between the Great Balsam Mountains and the Plott Balsams, two of the highest ranges in the Appalachian Mountains. The town and ranges are named after the nicknames of the red spruce and Fraser fir ("he-balsam" and "she-balsam," respectively), which are the dominant tree types at the highest elevations in the Southern Appalachian mountains.

The Balsam Mountain Inn is a historic three-story wooden Neo-Classical and Victorian hotel located at 68 Seven Springs Drive in Balsam, North Carolina, United States. It is among the oldest remaining resorts in the North Carolina mountains and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in July 1982. The 46,000-square foot inn includes a two-story gallery-style 100-foot-long front deck, 50 dormer windows, and a dining room and library on the first floor.

Charles and Annie Quinlan House, also known as The Inn on Prospect Hill and Prospect Hill, is a historic home located at Waynesville, Haywood County, North Carolina. It was built in 1901–1902, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, transitional Queen Anne / Colonial Revival style frame dwelling. It consists of an irregular form core hipped on three sides, gabled on the north, and expanded on all sides with hip-roof wings or bays.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
