Eaglenest Mountain (also known as Eagles Nest Mountain) is a mountain located 2 miles south of Maggie Valley, North Carolina in Haywood County. It is part of the Plott Balsams, a range of the Appalachian Mountains, and less than a mile south of North Eaglenest Mountain, a higher mountain which used to be called Mount Junaluska and is the highest mountain overlooking Lake Junaluska from the southwest. The closest town that is accessible by road is Hazelwood. Hazelwood was absorbed into the larger incorporated Town of Waynesville in 1995. In 1900, S. C. Satterthwaite of Waynesville, North Carolina, which was 5 miles away, built the Eagle Nest Hotel at an elevation of 5050 feet. The location was a mountain range he called The Junaluskas, on a peak called Mount Junaluska, since named North Eaglenest Mountain. The hotel was destroyed by a fire of undetermined origin on April 22, 1918.

Satterthwait of Waynesville, North Carolina, which was 5 miles (8.0 km) away, built the Eagle Nest Hotel at an elevation of 5,050 feet (1,540 m). The location was a mountain range he called The Junaluskas, on a peak called Mount Junaluska. The hotel was one of the two hay fever resorts in western North Carolina, the other being Cloudland on Roan Mountain, and it had room for 100 guests (although tents could be used if the hotel filled up) and a view of Plott Balsam. "[A] good wagon road" reached the top of the mountain. The hotel was destroyed by a fire of undetermined origin on April 22, 1918. There was talk of rebuilding but it never happened. A road that was built in 1898, some say by Cherokee, was not used by cars for 20 years. In 1937, H.G. Stone and H.L. Liner took over the road, improved it and began charging tolls to "Scenic Eagle’s Nest Road". This lasted only until 1941. Houses were built on the former Satterwait Estate, and Steve and Sue Foreman have a house where the hotel once stood.

Waynesville is the county seat of Haywood County, North Carolina. It is the largest town in North Carolina west of Asheville. Waynesville is located about 30 miles (50 km) southwest of Asheville between the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains. As of the 2010 census, Waynesville had a population of 9,869. The town is located just outside the Pisgah National Forest and is close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Waynesville and Haywood County are part of the four-county Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area, currently the fifth largest metropolitan area in North Carolina. It is the third largest town in the MSA behind the cities of Asheville and Hendersonville.

Green Hill Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in Waynesville, North Carolina, where the town's first doctors, lawyers, politicians, preachers, and business people are buried. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cemetery is owned and operated by the Town of Waynesville.Colonel James Robert Love, who donated the land and founded Waynesville and is a hero of the American Revolutionary War, is buried on the highest hill in the cemetery. The white chief of the Cherokee people, William Holland Thomas, is buried there. He was also the founder of Thomas' Legion, a group of local mountaineers and Cherokee who fought during the American Civil War in Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. This placed the cemetery on the North Carolina Civil Wars Trail.Some of the other notable pioneers are Congressmen James Moody and William T. Crawford and hotel owner and town promoter S. C. Satterthwaite. The cemetery hold the graves of individuals who succumbed to the Spanish flu of 1918. Buried there are five brothers who were Confederate soldiers that died during the American Civil War. William Greer, the chauffeur to five presidents, including John F. Kennedy on the day of his assassination, is buried at the cemetery.Thomas Wolfe's father, William Oliver Wolfe, was a tombstone supplier and provided the cemetery's eight pieces of "funeral art", made of stone imported from Italy. An old mill stone was used in the grave marker for Barber's Orchard owner, R.N. Barber. There are other distinctive artistic grave markers in the cemetery. Local author and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, Caroline Pafford Miller, is buried at Green Hill.

Charles and Annie Quinlan House, also known as The Inn on Prospect Hill and Prospect Hill, is a historic home located at Waynesville, Haywood County, North Carolina. It was built in 1901–1902, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, transitional Queen Anne / Colonial Revival style frame dwelling. It consists of an irregular form core hipped on three sides, gabled on the north, and expanded on all sides with hip-roof wings or bays.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Dr. J. Howell Way House is a historic home located at the south end of Main Street Waynesville, Haywood County, North Carolina. The beautiful brick home was once a modest smaller brick home owned by the Welch family, relatives of Robert love the father of Waynesville. The original home pre dates the civil war and parts of the current structure dates to before the war. In 1888 Dr. J. Howell Way, a prominent physician, married Marietta Welch and in 1894 the small home was acquired, along with an 11-acre tract of land. Soon after dr. Way built a medical office and by 1899 had completed one of the areas most distinguished homes. The home is a large 3+1⁄2-story brick dwelling retaining a lot of the woodwork, large carved fireplaces, and grand staircase with Queen Anne and Colonial Revival style design elements. It also features a full attic and widow's walk on the very top of the structure. It has a complex roof system composed of a broad hip broken with projecting gables and shed dormers; a one-story, hip roof front wraparound porch and second floor balcony; porte-cochère, and a projecting three-sided, two story bay. Also on the property are the contributing medical office and carriage house.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Boone-Withers House is a historic home located at Waynesville, Haywood County, North Carolina. It was built about 1883, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, Late Victorian style frame dwelling. It has a large, two-story gabled wing and three smaller, two-story bays. It features a one-story, hip roofed wraparound porch and two tall chimneys.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Shelton House is a historic home located at Waynesville, Haywood County, North Carolina. The front section was built about 1878, with a later two-story rear wing. It features an engaged two-tier front porch and stepped-shoulder, gable end brick chimneys.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.Shelton House is now a historic house museum that features historic furnishings and decorative items, heritage crafts, agricultural exhibits, and items of today's crafters and artisans. The early 20th century barn includes antique farm tools. By 1918, the home was inhabited by William Taylor Shelton. Shelton spent 26 years as an instructor in Native American schools in North Carolina, Arizona, and New Mexico, including the Cherokee Indian School in Yellow Hill, North Carolina.

The Masonic Hall in Waynesville, North Carolina is a historic Masonic Lodge constructed in 1927 as a meeting hall for a local area Masonic Lodge. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.It is a three-story, Classical Revival style steel frame and brick building. The Masons lost the building through bankruptcy in 1930. The building was renovated in 1973.It is also a contributing building in the Waynesville Main Street Historic District. At a later date it was a private club and catering venue named "Gateway Club".Haywood County Register of Deeds records show that on April 12, 2019, Mandir Street LLC purchased the building for an estimated $885,000. The company, owned by Shan Arora and Satish Shah and named for a Hindi word that refers to the Church Street address, planned to use the building in a similar manner to the Gateway Club while respecting the history.The Three Seven is now a meeting and venue space offering Mason Hall on the first floor, Suites at the Three Seven on the second floor with offices for professional meetings, and the Grand Ballroom on the third floor.

The Waynesville Municipal Building, also known as the Former US Post Office Building, is a historic post office building located at Waynesville, Haywood County, North Carolina. Its construction in 1917 was supervised by the Office of the Supervising Architect under James A. Wetmore, and is a two-story, brick rectangular building in the Classical Revival style with a one-story rear extension. It measures 58 feet by 73 feet and features brick Ionic order pilasters with granite bases and capitals. The building housed Waynesville's post office until 1966 when it was purchased by the Town of Waynesville to serve as its Municipal Building.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. It is located in the Waynesville Main Street Historic District.

Clyde H. Ray Sr. House, also known as Ten Oaks and Breese House, is a historic home located at Waynesville, Haywood County, North Carolina. It was built in 1901–1902, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, Colonial Revival style frame dwelling with Queen Anne style design elements. It is sheathed in weatherboard and has a multi-gabled and hipped roof and two interior end brick chimneys. Also on the property is a contributing spring house.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

The Former Citizens Bank and Trust Company Building is a historic bank building located at Waynesville, Haywood County, North Carolina. It was built in 1921, and is a two-story, brick and marble front rectangular building in the Classical Revival style. It measures 76 feet by 31 feet and features a tall parapet faced with marble block that rises above the cornice. The bank ceased operation in 1932, and the building has since housed retail businesses.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. It is located in the Waynesville Main Street Historic District.
