Lucia is an unincorporated community in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States, approximately 6.5 miles (10.5 km) east of the town of Stanley. The Andrew Carpenter House, near Lucia, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Holly Bend, also known as Hollywood, is a historic plantation house located near Huntersville, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. It was built between 1795 and 1800, and is a two-story, five bay by two bay, frame dwelling with Federal style design elements. It has gable roof, brick exterior end chimneys, and a one-story, full-width, hip roof porch.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The Riverbend Steam Station was a former 454-MW coal-fired electrical power plant in Gaston County, North Carolina, owned by Duke Energy. It was originally slated for decommissioning in 2015, but was closed in April 2013. The four-unit station was named for a bend in the Catawba River on which it was located. Riverbend was considered a cycling station to be brought on line to supplement supply when electricity demand was highest. Four gas-fired combustion turbine units were also housed on the site, but were retired in October 2012. The last recognizable section of the structure and its boiler were demolished on 22 June 2018. Duke Energy claimed that coal ash basins from Riverbend Steam Station were fully excavated in March 2019.

Lowesville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lincoln County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census, up from 1,440 in 2000.

St. Joseph's Catholic Church is a historic church located near Mount Holly, North Carolina, Gaston County, North Carolina. It was the fourth Catholic church built in North Carolina, the first west of Raleigh, and the first in what is today the Diocese of Charlotte. Built to serve the Irish miners in the area, it underwent a long period of neglect until restoration efforts began in the mid-20th century. Today it is operated as a mission church of Queen of the Apostles Church in Belmont.

Mountain Island Lake is a lake northwest of Charlotte, North Carolina created in 1924 to coincide with the building of Mountain Island Hydroelectric Station. It is named after the mountain which appears as an island in the lake, and the surrounding area is identified by the lake's name. The shape of the lake follows the meander of the Catawba River's course, dammed near the Mount Holly Wastewater Plant. Full pond elevation is approximately 647.5 feet (197 m). The lake has around 3,281 acres (13 km2) of surface area and 61 miles (98 km) of shoreline.

Mountain Island is an unincorporated community in eastern Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. Not to be confused with the Charlotte neighborhood of the same name in Mecklenburg County. It is approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Mount Holly. Its name comes from a small island in Mountain Island Lake, on the border of Gaston and Mecklenburg counties. Located on the extreme southwestern end of the lake, the island is mainly used as an anchor point for recreation, picnicking, and camping. A cotton mill, said by some authorities to be the first in Gaston County, was established on Mountain Island in 1848 by Thomas R. Tate and Henry Humphreys, owners of the Mount Hecla steam-powered mill near Greensboro, North Carolina. They hoped to take advantage of the less expensive water power from the Catawba River. The site at river's edge featured a partially completed canal around the shoals that could be used for a mill race, and a steep island whose top now rises from the lake. Machinery was moved from the Mount Hecla mill by mule-drawn wagon and operations began in 1849. A village of brick houses grew around the mill. The mill and village were destroyed on July 15, 1916, in a flood caused by a hurricane.In 1920 the Charlottesville, Virginia company of Rinehart and Dennis was awarded a Duke Power Company contract to build a dam at Mountain Island for the purpose of using water power to generate electricity. To supplement housing for its workers, a large number of temporary frame houses were built by the contractor. In 1923, only seven years after the flood, the Mountain Island Hydroelectric Plant was completed and in service. The Mountain Island Dam and Hydroelectric Station still operates today. St. Joseph's Catholic Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The Battle of Cowan's Ford was a battle in the Southern Theater of Cornwallis's 1780–1782 Campaign that eventually led to the British Army's surrender at Yorktown during the American Revolutionary War. It was fought on February 1, 1781, at Cowan's ford on the Catawba River in northwestern Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, between a force of about 2,400 British and about 800 Whig militia who were attempting to slow the British advance across the river. The American general William Lee Davidson was killed in this battle.

Cowans Ford Hydroelectric Station is a hydroelectric power plant and dam located near Huntersville, North Carolina, approximately 20 miles north of Charlotte on Lake Norman. It is the largest conventional hydro station owned by Duke Energy, generating up to 350 MW of power.Three units began generating electricity in 1963, with a fourth unit beginning operation in 1967. They supply "peaking power"—extra electricity needed to meet demand when it is needed most—typically hot summer days and cold winter mornings.Cowans Ford Dam impounds the Catawba River to create Lake Norman, the largest man-made body of fresh water in North Carolina. The lake provides water to Lincoln County and the communities of Davidson, Mooresville, Charlotte and Huntersville. The lake was named for former Duke Power president Norman Cocke.

Edward M. Rozzell House is a historic home located near Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. It was built about 1880, and is a two-story, three-bay, frame I-house with a kitchen ell. It has a side-gable roof and stucco covered brick end chimneys. Also on the property are the contributing corn crib (c. 1900) and single-pen log barn (c. 1880).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

The McGuire Nuclear Station is a nuclear power plant located about 17 miles (27 km) northwest of Charlotte, North Carolina, on the state's largest lake, Lake Norman. It is a 32,500-acre (13,200 ha) lake created in 1963 by Duke Power for the Cowans Ford Hydroelectric Station. The McGuire units use the lake's water for cooling. This plant has two Westinghouse pressurized water reactors and has a capability to produce 2,250 megawatts of net power, with a net generation of 17,514 GW·h in 2005. This represents 44% of the total nuclear power generation for the state of North Carolina.

The Andrew Carpenter House on State Road 1820 in Gaston County, North Carolina, is believed to have been built for Andrew Carpenter shortly after his marriage to Sophia Smith on April 19, 1831. The two-story Federal style plantation house is two rooms deep and has paired chi mneys. It is one of the largest early-19th century houses in Gaston County.The house was accessioned to the National Register of Historic Places on March 17, 1983.
