The transmitter is off Windy Hill Road in Maple Hill. WIBW-FM broadcasts at 100,000 watts.The station serves as the primary Emergency Alert System station for the state of Kansas along with sister station KTPK. WIBW-FM, along with co-owned WIBW and one-time sister station WIBW-TV, are unusual in having call signs beginning with a "W", while all other stations in Kansas have "K" call signs. The reason is that the AM station was originally established in Indiana in 1925, a state in W territory. WIBW kept its call letters when it moved to Topeka, which it has kept to this day. In addition, the Federal Communications Commission allows co-owned FM and TV stations to share the same call sign, even if the call letters do not conform to current policy for that state.

Lake Vaquero is a private lake located two blocks southwest of Topeka, Kansas, and about three blocks northwest of Lake Sherwood (Kansas). It is a manmade lake contained by a 33 ft (10 m) high dam on its southwest. It is bounded by Indian Hills Road on the east, El Cerrito Drive on the south, Lagito Drive on the west and SW 29th Street on the north. If filled to the dam's brim, the lake would have a 340-acre (1,400,000 m2) capacity. It normally has a 306-acre (1,240,000 m2) capacity.Lake Vaquero was built in the early 1960s. It has always been a lake and over the years residences have been built around it. Today, it is completely surrounded by houses. Periodically the lake has been dredged, because runoff from nearby construction and fields has resulted in the lake bottom being covered in silt. In 2010, the lake's owners, represented by the Vaquero Lake Club, faced costly upgrades to the dam to increase the safety of persons and property downstream from it.Being a private lake, Vaquero Lake Club members enjoy boating, fishing and swimming at the beach on Lake Vaquero.

The 30-mile-long (48 km) tributary of the Kansas River goes through Wabaunsee County (where it begins) and Shawnee County, Kansas (passing to the west of Topeka in its run to the Kansas). Mission Creek was named for a Kaw mission near the banks.

The school is next to Washburn Rural Middle School. In 2007, Edward Raines became the new principal. The "Junior Blue" is the School mascot with the school colors being blue and white. The average annual enrollment is approximately 1,900 students.Washburn Rural is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association and offers a variety of sports programs. Athletic teams compete in the 6A division and are known as the "Junior Blues". Extracurricular activities are also offered in the form of performing arts, school publications, and clubs.

It serves Southern and Southwestern Shawnee County, as well as a small portion of extreme northern Osage County. It serves Southwestern and Western portions of the city of Topeka, as well as the communities of Pauline, Montara, Auburn, and Wakarusa. It has one primary school, one intermediate school, seven elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.
