Silver Lake USD 372 is a public unified school district headquartered in Silver Lake, Kansas, United States. The district includes the communities of Silver Lake, Kiro, and nearby rural areas.

Silver Lake is a lake on the west side of the town of Silver Lake, Kansas. It is about a half mile north of the Kansas River. Having an average surface area of 14-acre (57,000 m2), it is one of the very few natural lakes in Kansas. It originally was a part of the Kansas River and was left as a lake when the river changed course in the nineteenth century or earlier. However, it is said to be fed by a spring in the lakebed. The lake is crescent-shaped. When the town of Silver Lake was founded in 1871, the lake already existed. Silver Lake is one of at least six oxbow lakes formed from the Kansas River.Since the lakebed is mostly shallow, the surface area of Silver Lake can vary considerably. In a drought in the 1980s the lakebed all but dried up. During times of much rain the surface area of the lake can be at least 40-acre (160,000 m2).Silver Lake is a public lake, and boating and fishing are allowed. No swimming is permitted, and there is no public boat ramp, so boaters must obtain permission of landowners to launch boats. Almost the entire eastern side is bordered by business and residential buildings. The west side is bordered by crop fields.

Kiro is an unincorporated community in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States.

The Kansas Historical Society is the official state historical society of Kansas. Headquartered in Topeka, it operates as "the trustee of the state" for the purpose of maintaining the state's history and operates the Kansas Museum of History, Kansas State Archives and Library, Kansas State Capitol Tour Center, and 16 state-owned sites. It also serves as the State Historic Preservation Office, and works closely with the Kansas State Department of Education to provide standards-based programs for history and social studies curriculum in the schools.

The Kansas Museum of History is the state historical museum in Topeka, Kansas, United States. It presents Kansas history from the prehistoric to modern eras in 30,000 square feet (2,800 m2) of exhibits. The galleries feature a train (Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe locomotive with two cars), full-sized tipi in the Southern Cheyenne style, a 1950s diner, and many other large features. Major topics covered in the main gallery include Native American tribal history, westward movement on the Oregon and Santa Fe trails, early settlers, the Bleeding Kansas and Civil War eras, and Populism at the turn of the 20th century.

The Pottawatomie Baptist Mission Building is a historic mission off W 6th Street, one-half mile west of Wanamaker Road in Topeka, Kansas. It was built in 1849 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. It was built to serve Pottawatomie Native Americans who had been forcibly removed along the Potawatomi Trail of Death in 1838 from the Ohio region to a reservation on the Kansas River west of Topeka. Baptist missionaries Robert Simerwell and Reverend Johnston Lykins came to the reservation in 1848, from the nearby Shawnee mission. Lykins petitioned for, designed, and oversaw the construction of the building at a cost to the federal government of US$4,800 (equivalent to about $162,000 in 2022).As a school, it was a three-story building made of ashlar stone 85 by 35 feet (26 m × 11 m) in plan, with 12 rooms and 60 windows and doors.It was closed in 1861 because its administrator, the Southern Baptist Convention, was identified with the Confederate States of America during Bleeding Kansas and leading up to the American Civil War. The 320 acres (130 ha) of land was sold to Robert I. Lee and the building was remodeled into a race horse barn. It is now owned by the Kansas Historical Society as a museum component. It is one of the oldest buildings in the Kansas, and is the only surviving historical structure of pioneering Baptist missions in Kansas.

Lake Vaquero is a private lake located two blocks southwest of Topeka, Kansas, and about three blocks northwest of Lake Sherwood (Kansas). It is a manmade lake contained by a 33 ft (10 m) high dam on its southwest. It is bounded by Indian Hills Road on the east, El Cerrito Drive on the south, Lagito Drive on the west and SW 29th Street on the north. If filled to the dam's brim, the lake would have a 340-acre (1,400,000 m2) capacity. It normally has a 306-acre (1,240,000 m2) capacity.Lake Vaquero was built in the early 1960s. It has always been a lake and over the years residences have been built around it. Today, it is completely surrounded by houses. Periodically the lake has been dredged, because runoff from nearby construction and fields has resulted in the lake bottom being covered in silt. In 2010, the lake's owners, represented by the Vaquero Lake Club, faced costly upgrades to the dam to increase the safety of persons and property downstream from it.Being a private lake, Vaquero Lake Club members enjoy boating, fishing and swimming at the beach on Lake Vaquero.

Shawnee County is located in northeast Kansas, in the central United States. Its county seat and most populous city is Topeka, the state capital. As of the 2020 census, the population was 178,909, making it the third-most populous county in Kansas. The county was one of the original 33 counties created by the first territorial legislature in 1855, and it was named for the Shawnee tribe.
