Herkingen

The Grevelingendam is a dam located in the Grevelingen sea inlet between Schouwen-Duiveland and Goeree-Overflakkee in The Netherlands. The Grevelingendam was the fourth structure constructed as part of the Delta Works.The dam is six kilometres in length. Construction began in 1958 with the aim of delivering it in 1964. Due to several setbacks, the construction of the dam took seven years and was opened on 1 April 1965 by Minister of Transport and Water Management, Jan van Aartsen. There is a navigation lock at the southern end of the dam near Bruinisse, and nearby a control lock using a siphon system, known as the Flakkeese Spuisluis, which connects the Eastern Scheldt with the Grevelingenmeer.The construction of the Grevelingendam permitted Dutch civil engineers and contractors to gain experience that would be necessary for the Brouwersdam, along with more complicated closure works such as those at the Haringvlietdam, and the Oosterscheldekering.

Battenoord is a hamlet in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee. It lies near the village of Herkingen, and on the northside of the Grevelingenmeer. The hamlet was first mentioned between 1420 and 1421 as Battenoert, and probably means "land (near water) of Batto (person)". It was originally a name of a shoal.In 1504, the harbour of Nieuwe-Tonge was relocated to Battenoord. The hamlet was severely affected by the North Sea flood of 1953 and in and around Battenoord 55 people lost their lives. Battenoord is considered part of Nieuwe-Tonge. It has place name signs. Battenoord is the winter home of a group flamingoes between c. October until c. April.

Dirksland (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈdɪr(ə)kslɑnt] ) is a village and former municipality on Goeree-Overflakkee Island in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The former municipality had a population of about 8,000 in 2007, and covered an area of about 74 km2 of which about 19 km2 was water. The former municipality of Dirksland also included the communities of Herkingen, and Melissant. On 1 January 2013, Dirksland merged with Goedereede, Middelharnis, and Oostflakkee into the new municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee. The North Sea flood of 1953 did not have as much of a destructive effect on Dirksland as the rest of the island, because Dirksland is somewhat higher. Dirksland is the largest of the three communities within the former municipality and also has the only hospital on Goeree-Overflakkee island. The Van Weel-Bethesda Hospital is one of the smallest in the country, but has an excellent reputation. Dirksland can be recognized from a distance by the tallest water tower in the country. The towns are agriculturally focused and have several campgrounds for people who prefer a bit of rest over the busy Ouddorp area but still want to be close to shore. Dirksland has an inland harbor with a newly restored gate complex.

Bruinisse is a village in the south-west of the Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland.

Grevelingen or Grevelingenmeer (Lake Grevelingen) is a closed off part of the Rhine-Meuse estuary on the border of the Dutch provinces of South Holland and Zeeland. It is situated between the islands of Goeree-Overflakkee (South Holland) and Schouwen-Duiveland (Zeeland) and was closed off as part of the Delta Works, a huge engineering project designed to protect the southwestern part of the Netherlands from flooding. The Brouwersdam, a dike connecting the two islands on the west, closes off the Grevelingen from the North Sea. The Grevelingendam, the dike on the east, blocks the inflow of Rhine and Meuse water. Since its closure in 1971 the saltwater of the Grevelingen slowly started to become brackish due to rainwater and excess polderwater from the islands, but the Dutch changed their mind and decided that they wanted to preserve the saline biotope. Therefore, in 1978 a sluice was created under the Brouwersdam, partially restoring and maintaining the saline character of the Grevelingen. Nevertheless, the water body life remains affected by the changes in water salinity, in the transport of sediments, and by a deficit in oxygen in deep water, caused by the levee since 1971. Benthic life (mussels, oysters and many fixed organisms) is rich in the shallow waters in the photic zone, but the deep sediments are less conducive to marine life, and fishes in open water are rarely observed during diving. The Brouwerssluis is open all year round except during storm floods. Brouwerssluis is the home of a seal colony subsisting on fishes transported by the seawater stream entering the water body during high tide. Connexxion bus service 104 crosses the Brouwersdam, bus service 133 (and others) the Grevelingendam. The Grevelingenmeer is the largest saltwater water body in Europe and is a popular place for holidays and water sports (sailing, surfing, diving).

Sirjansland is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 19 km south of Hellevoetsluis.

De Sluis or Sluis is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Tholen, and lies about 21 km north-west of Bergen op Zoom.De Sluis is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Sint Philipsland. It has place name signs and consists of about 10 houses.The village was named after the nearby sluice, and was established after 1900 to house the employees of the Rotterdamsche Tramweg Maatschappij. A tram line was built to Brouwershaven and was mainly used for the transportation of sugar beet. The tram line closed in 1953.The ferry from Anna Jacobapolder to Zijpe used to be located in De Sluis. In 1988, the Philipsdam was completed and the ferry was disestablished.

Nieuwe-Tonge is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee, and lies about 13 km south of Hellevoetsluis.

Sommelsdijk is a village on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, South Holland, the Netherlands, and part of the municipality of the same name. Sommelsdijk has (1 January 2022) 7,195 inhabitants which makes it the second largest settlement after Middelharnis on the island.In the past, Sommelsdijk was the only place on the island of Goeree-Overflakee that was part of the province of Zeeland. In 1805 it was made a part of Holland, and remained such under the amendment of the Dutch Constitution of 1814. Early March 1941 during the Second World War, nearly two hundred young men from Sommelsdijk were incarcerated for one month because of insulting the German army and the Dutch police. Sommelsdijk was a separate municipality until 1966, when it became part of Middelharnis. Most recently, it was made part of the new municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee in 2013.

Oosterland is a village in the south-west Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland, about 22 km south of Hellevoetsluis.

Anna Jacobapolder is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Tholen, and lies about 20 km north west of Bergen op Zoom.

The Philipsdam is a dam constructed as part of the Delta Works in the Netherlands. It separates water of the lakes Krammer and Volkerak from the Oosterschelde. The dam connects the Grevelingendam to Sint Philipsland.
