At the start of the Western European campaign of 1940, the Felsennest ("Rocky Eyrie" in English) was the codename for one of Hitler's Führer Headquarters near Bad Münstereifel, Germany. It was much more cramped than Adolf Hitler's other field bunkers, having only four rooms. Hitler was at the Felsennest in the autumn of 1939, because there were plans to invade France and the Low Countries. He was there again on May 10, 1940 when the invasion took place.

Münstereifel Forest (German: Münstereifeler Wald) is densely wooded region in the northern part of the Eifel mountains in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. In the south it borders on the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It has an area of 237 km² and lies at a height of between 200 and 500 m above sea level (NHN).

Bad Münstereifel (German pronunciation: [ˈbaːt mʏnstɐˈʔaɪ̯fl̩] (listen)) is a historical spa town in the district of Euskirchen, Germany, with about 17,000 inhabitants, situated in the far southwest of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The little town is one of only a few historical towns in the southwest of North Rhine-Westphalia, and because of this is often overcrowded by tourists throughout spring and summer.

The Ahr Hills (German: Ahrgebirge [ˈaːɐ̯ɡəˌbɪʁɡə] or Ahreifel [ˈaːɐ̯ˌʔaɪfl̩]) are a range of low mountains and hills up to 623.8 m above sea level (NHN) and 25 kilometres (16 mi) long in the Eifel region of Germany, which lie roughly southwest of Bonn on the border between the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. The forested Ahr Hills have numerous tourist destinations (e. g. Aremberg Castle and the Effelsberg Radio Telescope) and the section of a Roman road with its ancient Eifel Aqueduct.

The Alte Burg (also Alte Burg im Quecken or Alte Burg "am Quecken") in Bad Münstereifel, Germany, is a circular rampart that is the remains of a fortification from the Carolingian period. The refuge castle acted as a place of retreat for the local population and as protection for the daughter monastery of Prüm Abbey. The defences dating to the 9th century have been designated as a protected monument. The castle site lies within the county of Euskirchen in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The spur castle site lies northeast of the town centre on a hill spur, the second Quecken, above the Erft valley east of the B 51 federal highway at a height of 315 to 363 metres (1,033 to 1,191 ft). It is 300 metres (980 ft) long and 80 metres (260 ft) wide, excluding the outworks. There were at least two periods of construction. In the northeast is a motte. In the highest section of the site, the rubble stone foundation of a round tower has survived. In the 19th century a silver coin bearing the image of Louis the Pious is supposed to have been found here; it has not survived. In 1972 parts of the site were archaeologically investigated. During the excavations shards of pottery from the 9th century with decorations (Rollrädchenverzierung) were discovered.
