How, Cumbria

Fenton is a small village in the City of Carlisle district, in the English county of Cumbria. It is near the small town of Brampton.

How Mill was a railway station which served the village of The How, near Brampton in Cumbria. The station was closed in 1959, four years before the Beeching Axe. The How was on one side of the station, almost a mile away, while the Mill was on the other side. The Mill was a sawmill and a house where the family lived who own the Mill. A level crossing was in place in the early 1940s.

Hayton is a small village and civil parish in Cumbria, England, roughly 8 miles (13 km) east of Carlisle, and 10 miles (16 km) from the England/Scotland border. The population of the parish taken at the 2011 census was 2,222.The place name Hayton means hay farm and refers to the former farming in the area. There is a separate settlement named Hayton within Cumbria near Aspatria. St. Mary Magdalene Church was built in 1780. In the church are a number of memorials to the Graham family of Edmond Castle. Edmond Castle, a mile from the village, is thought to date from earlier than the 17th century. The nearby Toppin Castle farmhouse is a nineteenth-century imitation tower house.

Faugh is a small village situated to the East of the City of Carlisle and within 15 minutes of the Scottish Border. The village has always been English however the land of Cumberland was once Scottish with The String of Horses Inn pre-dating the Jacobites rising (1660).

Heads Nook is a village close to the market town of Brampton within the City of Carlisle district. It is in the English county of Cumbria.

Heads Nook railway station served the village of Heads Nook, south-west of Brampton, Cumbria, England. The station was on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway. It was closed in 1967 as part of the Beeching cuts. After which the station was left derelict until 1975 when it was demolished by British Rail. Flanked by railway police at midnight, B.R. workmen set to work on the demotion as 30 residents watched in disbelief. There had been a campaign to have it reopened as an unmanned halt. Consequently this move was seen as very underhand by campaigners. When interviewed by a newspaper reporter at the time, Mr Bernard Widdowson, chairman of Heads Nook Villagers Association at the time, said they were angry because the demolition work had come at a time when their negotiations with British Rail and Cumbria County Council were at a peak. A British Rail spokesman said the demolition was necessary for safety reasons with the platform. If it was to be reopened, temporary wooden structures could be used. B.R. also said that the demolition work needed to be conducted at night, as that was the only time there were no trains using the line. The station lamps were sold off. Two of them can be seen in the village, one not far away from the station just over the railway bridge. Not much of the station can be seen anymore as nature has reclaimed the platforms for its own. Today they look like nothing more than leafy green banks in the railway cutting, which the casual observer would pass by without any further thought.

Edmond Castle is a nineteenth-century structure north of the village of Hayton, Carlisle, Cumbria in England. The history of Edmond Castle is intertwined with the Graham family.It is now home to Philip Day, CEO and owner of the Edinburgh Woollen Mill retail chain.

The River Irthing is a river in Cumbria, England and a major tributary of the River Eden. The name is recorded as Ard or Arden in early references. For the first 15 miles of its course it defines the border between Northumberland and Cumbria.

Broadwath is a hamlet in the City of Carlisle district, in the English county of Cumbria. Broadwath is on Cairn Beck. Nearby settlements include the villages of Wetheral, Warwick Bridge, Great Corby and Heads Nook.

The River Gelt is a river in Cumbria, England and a tributary of the River Irthing. The source of the Gelt is close to Cumbria's border with Northumberland, where it rises (as New Water) at Butt Hill. The stream runs down Geltsdale Middle in the direction of Cumrew Fell, before turning northwards. After a short while, New Water is joined by Old Water in the King's Forest of Geltsdale. Old Water runs from Crookburn Pike. After the two streams combine, the river continues flowing to the northwest, passing between Talkin Fell and Castle Carrock Fell, then the villages of the same names. Having flown through Greenwell and under the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, the Gelt continues through Gelt Woods, overlooked by a Roman inscription dating from 207 AD and known as "the written rock of Gelt". Other stories and legends are associated with Abraham's Cave. In 1570 it saw the Battle of Gelt Bridge, when Leonard Dacre and his forces were defeated by Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon. The Gelt joins the River Irthing at Edmond Castle, about 10 miles east of Carlisle.

Ruleholme is a small hamlet on the A689 road and the River Irthing, near the village of Irthington, in the City of Carlisle district, in the English county of Cumbria (historically in Cumberland). It is also near Carlisle Lake District Airport.
