River Irthing

The River Gelt is a river in Cumbria, England and a tributary of the River Irthing. The source of the Gelt is close to Cumbria's border with Northumberland, where it rises (as New Water) at Butt Hill. The stream runs down Geltsdale Middle in the direction of Cumrew Fell, before turning northwards. After a short while, New Water is joined by Old Water in the King's Forest of Geltsdale. Old Water runs from Crookburn Pike. After the two streams combine, the river continues flowing to the northwest, passing between Talkin Fell and Castle Carrock Fell, then the villages of the same names. Having flown through Greenwell and under the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, the Gelt continues through Gelt Woods, overlooked by a Roman inscription dating from 207 AD and known as "the written rock of Gelt". Other stories and legends are associated with Abraham's Cave. In 1570 it saw the Battle of Gelt Bridge, when Leonard Dacre and his forces were defeated by Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon. The Gelt joins the River Irthing at Edmond Castle, about 10 miles east of Carlisle.

Edmond Castle is a nineteenth-century structure north of the village of Hayton, Carlisle, Cumbria in England. The history of Edmond Castle is intertwined with the Graham family.It is now home to Philip Day, CEO and owner of the Edinburgh Woollen Mill retail chain.

Ruleholme is a small hamlet on the A689 road and the River Irthing, near the village of Irthington, in the City of Carlisle district, in the English county of Cumbria (historically in Cumberland). It is also near Carlisle Lake District Airport.

Corby Hill is a village in Cumbria, England. It is located 5.4 miles (8.7 km) by road east of the city centre of Carlisle. The Trout Beck stream passes here. The village forms part of a small urban area which also includes the villages of Warwick Bridge and Little Corby. Corby Hill and Little Corby are in Hayton civil parish while Warwick Bridge is in the parish of Wetheral. There is a BP petrol filling station with a SPAR foodstore attached and also a doctors surgery.

Little Corby is a village in the county of Cumbria in the north of England. It is east of the city of Carlisle, alongside the River Eden and near to the A69 road. In 1870-72 the township had a population of 241.Along with the adjoining villages of Corby Hill and Warwick Bridge, Little Corby forms part of a small built-up area which is a dormitory village for Carlisle. Corby Hill and Little Corby are in Hayton civil parish while Warwick Bridge is in the parish of Wetheral.

Royal Air Force Crosby-on-Eden or more simply RAF Crosby-on-Eden was a former Royal Air Force station located 5.8 miles (9.3 km) north east of Carlisle, Cumbria and 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Brampton, Cumbria. It is nowadays Carlisle Lake District Airport.

Carlisle Lake District Airport (IATA: CAX, ICAO: EGNC) is a regional airport located 5 NM (9.3 km; 5.8 mi) east north-east of Carlisle, England. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the passenger terminal has been closed as from the 1st of April 2020 "until further notice".Carlisle has a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence that allows flights up to a maximum takeoff weight authorised (MTWA) of 12.5 tonnes. The airport is located on a hillside above the River Irthing. The airport has been the location for some prehistoric excavations.Since May 2009, the airport has been owned by Esken (formerly known as Stobart Group) on a 150-year lease. Between December 2014 and September 2015, a £12 million freight distribution centre was built on the south-eastern corner of the site, which is now leased to Eddie Stobart Logistics. Stobart Group also intended to build a further warehousing and distribution hub from 2017 on land adjacent to the freight distribution centre. After financial assistance from the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership, there were plans for passenger flights from June 2018 "to major tourism and business hubs including London, Dublin and Belfast" but the target date was postponed. On 4 July 2019 the new terminal was officially opened, and the first scheduled passenger flights since 1993 were commenced by Loganair to London Southend, Belfast City and Dublin airports.

Allenwood is a hamlet in the City of Carlisle district, in the county of Cumbria, England.

Warwick Bridge is a village in the City of Carlisle district of the county of Cumbria, England. It forms part of a small urban area which includes the villages of Corby Hill and Little Corby. Warwick Bridge lies within the civil parish of Wetheral though Corby Hill and Little Corby are in Hayton parish. Warwick Bridge is located on the River Eden and the A69 road, near the River Irthing. It is five miles east of the city of Carlisle and four miles from the town of Brampton. The bridge on the Eden, which gave the village its name, was built from 1833 to 1835 by Francis Giles.The village has a post office in Corby Hill, a Co-operative Food store and 2 churches, one being Our Lady & St Wilfrid's Church and the other St Paul's Holme Eden. There are two large mansion houses near or in the village, Warwick Hall and Holme Eden Hall built in 1837.

Our Lady and St Wilfrid's Church is a Roman Catholic church designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, completed in 1841. The church was designed for the Sarum Rite, and contains an Easter Sepulchre.

Burnrigg is a hamlet in Cumbria, England. It is located to the east of Carlisle. In 1887, The British Architect said "on a site particularly high and open, are two small two- storied blocks of tenements, in all thirty-two, two small rooms to each, no other accommodation except four privies".

Broadwath is a hamlet in the City of Carlisle district, in the English county of Cumbria. Broadwath is on Cairn Beck. Nearby settlements include the villages of Wetheral, Warwick Bridge, Great Corby and Heads Nook.
