Alexandra Dock, Liverpool

Hornby Dock was a dock located on the River Mersey, England, and part of the Port of Liverpool. It was situated in the northern dock system in Bootle. It connected to Gladstone Dock to the north and Alexandra Dock to the south and encompassed a sloping quayside.

Langton Dock is a dock on the River Mersey, England, and part of the Port of Liverpool. It is situated in the northern dock system in Bootle, connected to Alexandra Dock to the north and Brocklebank Dock to the south. Langton Dock locks provide a working connection to the river; one of the two remaining operational river entrances in the northern dock system.

Stanley Dock is a dock on the River Mersey, England, and part of the Port of Liverpool. It is situated in the Vauxhall area of Liverpool and is part of the northern dock system. The dock is connected to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to the east and Collingwood Dock to the west.

North Mersey station opened on 27 August 1866 as the terminus of the North Mersey Branch of the L&YR. The station was for goods only and initially there was an extensive goods yard at the foot of the descent down to river level and alongside the slope. A four-storey warehouse, loading mound and goods sheds was constructed between 1881 and 1884.The station was renamed North Mersey & Alexandra Docks station on 1 August 1892.By 1894 the yard was equipped with a 5-ton crane.The station was situated on Regent Road, immediately inland from Hornby Dock and Alexandra Dock 3. The station was connected to the North Mersey Branch at its northern end, to the south it was connected to the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board (MDHB) rail network which gave access to more dock facilities.The warehouse was extended in 1900 after a tender was let in 1899.Timber traffic passing through the local docks grew around the turn of the century and an extensive timber yard was laid out in 1904 to handle it, in 1907 the yard was fitted with an electric cantilever crane of 10 tons capacity. The crane, built by the local firm of Muskers had a 28-foot track gauge, a transverse span of 172 feet, a traverse of 1,620 feet and was capable of stacking timers to a height of 40 feet.In 1917—1918 the station was used as a transit depot for American troops, they disembarked and were put straight on trains without setting foot in the city.The North Mersey depot was adjacent to the massive grain elevators of the Liverpool Grain Storage and Transit Company, and later the 2,858,000 cubic feet of cold storage constructed at the end of Alexandra Dock 3. In 1929 the warehouse was reported to be 94,500 square feet capacity.After it opened in 1927 the station served the Gladstone Dock where the largest Atlantic liners were berthed.The timber yard crane was dismantled after 10 September 1952.The station closed to all traffic on 10 June 1968.

Alexandra Dock was a station located on the Liverpool Overhead Railway, west of Regent Road (A565) and within the MDHC Dock Estate. The station was named after the adjacent Alexandra Dock. The station was opened on the 6 March 1893 by the Marquis of Salisbury and was the northern terminus of the line until it was extended to Seaforth Sands just over a year later.The station closed, along with the rest of the line, on 30 December 1956. No evidence of this station remains.

Gladstone Dock was a station on the Liverpool Overhead Railway, between Alexandra Dock and Seaforth Sands. It was opened on 16 June 1930, the final station to open on the network. It was named after the adjacent Gladstone Dock, and was the only station on the network to be accessible directly from the dockside, with two steel bridges connecting the platforms, as it primarily served the passenger liners which frequently docked nearby. Only the northbound platform was directly accessible from the street.The station was opened at 6am on the first day of operation without a formal ceremony. It was originally only open on week days, but service was intended to be extended to be extended to weekends.The station was damaged during the Liverpool Blitz, requiring it to be rebuilt.The station closed, along with the rest of the line on 30 December 1956. No evidence of the station remains.

Brocklebank Dock is a dock on the River Mersey, England, and part of the Port of Liverpool. It is situated in the northern dock system in Bootle, connected to Langton Dock to the north and Canada Dock to the south. Carriers' Dock was originally sited to the east.

Langton Dock was a railway station on the Liverpool Overhead Railway, adjacent to the dock of the same name. It was opened in May 1896 due to demand from the busy nature of the dock. The station had a hydraulic lift bridge which enabled a section of track to be lifted up to allow large vehicles to pass underneath.The station closed on 5 March 1906. No evidence of this station remains.

Seaforth Battery, Seaforth, Merseyside, England. was built to protect shipping on the River Mersey. Constructed as part of the defences of the Mersey Docks, the battery was designed to engage ships using the Rock Channel head on as well as the other shipping channels. The battery supported Fort Perch Rock, which was located opposite on the Wirral bank of the river. It was completed at the end of 1879 at a cost of £19,109.The main armament comprised four 12.5-inch RML guns which were mounted in armoured granite casemates. These were installed soon after completion of the battery. These were soon augmented in 1894 with two 4.7-inch Quick Fire guns which were originally sent to arm Fort Perch Rock. These were suitable for engaging fast torpedo boats. In 1898 a fire control centre for the 4.7-inch guns was added at the east end of the battery. In 1903 the four 12.5-inch RMLs were removed, as they were obsolete. In 1907 two of the 12.5-inch RML gun casemates were opened out to mount searchlights.In 1928 a review of the defences of the Mersey was undertaken and it was decided that Seaforth battery was no longer required. The battery was dismantled and the land returned to the harbour board in 1929.

Alexandra Dock railway station was located on the Alexandra Dock Branch, in Liverpool, England. The station served Alexandra Dock until the last train on 31 May 1948. Formal closure followed on 26 February 1949.

Carriers' Dock (or North Carriers' Dock) was a dock on the River Mersey, England, and part of the Port of Liverpool. The dock was situated in the northern dock system and connected to Brocklebank Dock to the west.
