Camp Grant was a U.S. Army facility located in the southern outskirts of Rockford, Illinois named in honor of American Civil War general Ulysses S. Grant. Camp Grant covered an area of 5,600 acres during World War I and 3,200 acres during World War II, and was in operation from 1917 to 1946.

In terms of passenger service, the airport offers year-round direct service to five destinations, along with seasonal destinations. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017–2021 categorized it as a non-hub primary commercial service facility.

Bell Bowl Prairie is a remnant dry gravel prairie located on public land in Rockford, Illinois (Winnebago County). It is considered a Category I Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (INAI) site due to its high quality natural community of native flora and fauna. It is currently owned by the Greater Rockford Airport Authority (GRAA), a public taxing agency in Winnebago County. According to GRAA, the prairie is "one of the best-preserved prairies in northern Illinois – a glimpse of the Rockford area prior to colonization".Assessed in 2018, 5 acres of the approximately 22-acre prairie were considered high quality (roughly corresponding to the INAI area), and 4.2 acres were considered "moderate quality". In 2021, most of the prairie was planned to be demolished as part of the Chicago Rockford International Airport's expansion plans. Environmental organizations, ecologists, and conservationists working to stop construction within the prairie area argue that the Greater Rockford Airport Authority can redesign the expansion plan without impacting the high quality prairie. After the Natural Land Institute filed a lawsuit against the airport board and several governmental agencies in October 2021, the airport halted construction to begin a renewed round of environmental consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Federal Aviation Administration stated construction is on pause until June 1st, 2022.

The Kishwaukee River, locally known as simply The Kish, is a 63.4-mile-long (102.0 km) river in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is a tributary of the Rock River and its name derives from the Potowatomi word for "river of the sycamore".

The Indian Hill Manor and Farm Historic District is a historic house and farm complex located at 6901-7057 Kishwaukee Road in Rockford, Illinois. The district consists of three parts, all of which were once part of the estate of Charles C. and Esta Barrett: a manor house and coach house, a working farm, and a small forest preserve. Charles, a Chicago businessman, and Esta, an actress and socialite, purchased the property in 1915 with the intent of using it as a rural retreat and gentleman's farm. Rockford architect Charles W. Bradley designed the Colonial Revival manor house and coach house, which were built in 1916–18. Key Colonial features of the design include its rectangular massing, double-hung windows, and classically styled entrance; the house also includes Craftsman elements, such as its low hip roof with overhanging eaves and its exposed ceiling beams in the living and dining rooms. Charles died shortly after the manor house was completed, but Esta lived in the house until she sold it to her son in 1941.The complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 21, 2001.

It is the largest township, in terms of area, in Illinois. The city of Rockford, along with the villages of Cherry Valley and New Milford are all located in Rockford Township.

The Turner School is a historic school building located at 1410 Broadway in Rockford, Illinois. The school was built in 1898; it was named for city alderman J.M. Turner. Rockford architectural firm Bradley & Carpenter designed the school in a combination of three popular contemporary architectural styles: Classical Revival, Colonial Revival, and Richardsonian Romanesque. The 2+1⁄2-story building is built from brick with a limestone foundation and a hipped roof. The main entrance is on the south side; the arched entrance is located within a projecting bay with a gabled pediment. The building's roof includes an octagonal cupola and gabled dormers.After the school closed, the building served as an abortion clinic from 1973 until 2011. In 2015, the building was approved for use as a police station.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 29, 2015.

The Herrick Cobblestone is a historic cobblestone residence in Rockford, Illinois. It may be the oldest house in Rockford.
