The East Bay Innovation Academy, or EBIA for short, is a public charter middle school and a high school in Oakland, California within the Oakland Unified School District. The school was founded on October 24, 2013, and opened on August 10, 2014, by Rochelle Benning and Laurie Jones. It is notable for merging progressive ideals like project-based learning with schooling.

The Oakland Zoo is a zoo located in the Grass Valley neighborhood of Oakland, California, United States. Established on June 6, 1922, it is managed by the Conservation Society of California, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of wildlife both locally and globally. The zoo is home to more than 850 native and exotic animals. It is recognized for its outstanding leadership in animal welfare, animal care, particularly its elephant care program, its rescue, rehabilitation and conservation programs and for its Leed-certified, 17,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art veterinary hospital—the largest wild animal veterinary facility in Northern California. Oakland Zoo is the recipient of numerous "Best of" awards, including 30 Best U.S. Zoos by U.S. News & World Report and "10 Best" by USA Today Reader’s Choice Awards. On July 12, 2018, the Oakland Zoo opened the California Trail, focusing on the state's remarkable native wildlife—both past and present.

Joseph Knowland State Arboretum and Park is a park located in the Grass Valley neighborhood of Oakland, California. It was formerly a state park, and is now the property of the City of Oakland. The Oakland Zoo occupies the developed western lowlands of the park, just off I-580.

Grass Valley is a neighborhood in Oakland, California. Located in East Oakland in the hills east of Bishop O'Dowd High School and the Oakland Zoo. It straddles upper Golf Links Road and lies just west of Skyline Road's end. It is adjacent to the Lake Chabot Golf Course. It is home to Fire Station #28, Grass Valley Elementary School and East Bay Bible Church.

Chabot Park is located in the Southeastern section of the Oakland Hills. The neighborhood has a population of around 2,845. Chabot Park is in Alameda County. The neighborhood is adjacent to Knowland State Park and the Oakland Zoo.

Bishop O'Dowd High School is a Catholic, co-educational, college preparatory school in Oakland, California, administered by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland and named for the late auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, James T. O'Dowd (1907–1950). The school requires all students to attend school liturgies (Catholic Mass and prayer services), to enroll in religious studies courses each semester, and to complete its 4-year service learning program. O’Dowd is a Catholic high school community of 1,212 students. The school has 129 faculty and staff members and more than 82 part-time coaches, teachers and moderators.

Barack Obama Academy is a small alternative middle school in Oakland, California. It is part of the Oakland Unified School District. It became notable as the first middle school in the United States to be officially named or renamed after US President Barack Obama in March 2009. The middle school, which opened in 2007, was formerly known as the Alternative Learning Community. The name change was prompted by the school's students.As of 2011 it had 24 students, most of whom were low income African Americans.

San Leandro (Spanish for "St. Leander") is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. It is located in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area; between Oakland to the northwest, and Ashland, Castro Valley, and Hayward to the southeast. The population was 91,008 as of the 2020 census.

Lake Chabot is a man-made lake covering 317 acres (1.3 km2) in Alameda County, California, United States. Part of the lake lies within Oakland city limits, but most of it lies in unincorporated Castro Valley, just east of San Leandro. It was formed by the damming of San Leandro Creek. The lake was completed in 1875 to serve as a primary source of water for the East Bay. The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has developed a safe eating advisory for Lake Chabot based on levels of mercury found in fish caught here.

Rancho San Antonio, also known as the Peralta Grant, was a 44,800-acre (181 km2) land grant by Governor Pablo Vicente de Solá, the last Spanish governor of California, to Don Luís María Peralta, a sergeant in the Spanish Army and later, commissioner of the Pueblo of San José, in recognition of his forty years of service. The grant, issued on August 3, 1820, embraced the sites of the cities of San Leandro, Oakland, Alameda, Emeryville, Piedmont, Berkeley, and Albany.

The Peralta Home, at 561 Lafayette Avenue in San Leandro was the first brick house built in Alameda County. It was constructed in the Spanish Colonial style in 1860 for Ignacio Peralta, early San Leandro Spanish settler, by W.P. Toler (Peralta's son-in-law). A.C. Peachey purchased the house from Rafaela Sanchez Peralta (Igancio's widow) on May 18, 1875. Immediately thereafter Peachey added a large wood extension at the back of the brick house. Technically a 2+1⁄2-story building, the old Peralta house had its main reception rooms on the second story. Peachey continued this emphasis on the second story in his additions, treating the ground floor as a basement. The house remained in the Peachey family for thirty-four years. Between 1909 and 1926, it went to Daniel and C.L. Best. Eventually in November 1926, it was purchased by the Alta Mira Club, who are still the current owners. One of the more interesting of 19th-century houses in San Leandro, it has additional historic associations with the large and land-rich Peralta family, who were pioneers of the area. Peralta's father, Luís María Peralta, received the Rancho San Antonio land grant from Spanish Governor Don Pablo Vicente de Solá on October 20, 1820. The house is a California Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NPS-78000654).

Sequoyah Heights is a smaller part of the Oak Knoll neighborhood that runs alongside the southeastern part of the Oakland hills. The neighborhood borders San Leandro. Sequoyah Heights is one of East Oakland's safer and more well-to-do neighborhoods, and features a religious preschool and the Sequoyah Country Club. Sequoyah Heights neighbors the Grass Valley neighborhood, home of the Oakland Zoo, the Seminary neighborhood and the site of the now closed Oak Knoll Naval Hospital.
