Wilmette, Illinois

No Man's Land, Illinois was never an official place name, but has been used to refer to at least two areas that fit the broader meaning of No man's land.

The Gross Point Village Hall, located at 609 Ridge Road in Wilmette, Illinois, was the village hall of the defunct village of Gross Point, Illinois. The village of Gross Point, named for a French description of a turn in nearby Lake Michigan's shoreline, was settled from the 1830s onward and incorporated in 1874. In 1896, Gross Point built a village hall to both house its government and serve as a community center. The two-story brick building has a Victorian design with two projecting front entrances, which originally led to the fire department and the village offices respectively. The small village relied heavily on alcohol taxes to fund its government, and had many taverns as a result; protests from prohibitionists in nearby Evanston, combined with opposition to new taxes to fund a sewer system, led to the village voting to dissolve itself in 1919. The village hall was sold to a private resident to pay back debts from the sewer system.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 5, 1991. It is now home to the Wilmette Historical Museum.

The James B. Irving House is a historic house at 2771 Crawford Avenue in Evanston, Illinois. The house was built in 1928 for James Irving and his family; it was originally located at 1318 Isabella Street in neighboring Wilmette. John S. Van Bergen, a prominent Chicago-area architect and former employee of Frank Lloyd Wright, designed the Prairie School house. The house has a stucco exterior with bands of ornamental wood, rows of casement windows, and a low hip roof with wide overhanging eaves, all characteristic features of the Prairie School. The interior has a split-level plan, allowing for separate floors while keeping the house low to the ground. To avoid its demolition, the house was moved from its Wilmette site to its current location in 2014–15.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 5, 2021.

Kenilworth is a commuter railroad station in Kenilworth, Illinois, a small and affluent village in the North Shore area of Chicago. Metra's Union Pacific North Line trains go south to Ogilvie Transportation Center in Chicago and as far north as Kenosha, Wisconsin. In Metra's zone-based fare schedule, Kenilworth is in zone D. As of 2018, Kenilworth is the 98th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 501 weekday boardings.The station is on Kenilworth Avenue between Green Bay Road and Richmond Road. Northbound trains stop on the west platform, and southbound trains stop on the east platform. Travel time to Ogilvie ranges from 28 minutes on express trains to 38 minutes on local trains. It is also across the street from the Kenilworth Village Hall, which has the Green Bay Trail in the front yard. As of April 25, 2022, Kenilworth is served by 26 inbound trains and 25 outbound trains on weekdays, by 11 trains in each direction on Saturdays, and by eight trains in each direction on Sundays. The station was built in 1891 by the Chicago and North Western Railway to a design by architect Franklin Pierce Burnham of the firm Edbrooke and Burnham.

The Kenilworth Assembly Hall is a historic clubhouse located at 410 Kenilworth Avenue in Kenilworth, Illinois. The clubhouse was built in 1907 as a social club for the wealthy Chicago suburb. Resident and noted Prairie School architect George W. Maher designed the building. His design represents a transitional stage in his work; it was his last building to feature a significant horizontal emphasis, and it includes several early hints at style elements he later became known for. The windows are arranged in groups of three, which was typical of Maher's later works, and a stem-and-square motif used in several external elements evokes the signature thistle patterns he introduced the next year. The horizontal elements, which include the broad eaves and wall paneling, exhibit Maher's difficulties with the horizontal form of the Prairie School and were called "unsatisfactory" by architectural historian Carl W. Condit.The clubhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 21, 1979.The Kenilworth Club donated the Kenilworth Assembly Hall to the Kenilworth Park District on August 1, 2016.

Kenilworth is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States, 15 miles (24 km) north of downtown Chicago. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 2,513. It is the newest of the nine suburban North Shore communities bordering Lake Michigan, and is one of those developed as a planned community. In 2018, Kenilworth was the eighth wealthiest community in the United States, and the wealthiest in the Midwestern United States.

The Oak Circle Historic District is a historic district in Wilmette, Illinois, United States. The district covers 2.6 acres (0.011 km2) and includes twenty-two contributing properties and four non-contributing properties, all located along Oak Circle. It primarily consists of fifteen single-family homes representative of the Prairie School and Craftsman styles of architecture. The Oak Circle Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 21, 2001; it was the first historic district to be designated in Wilmette.

Wilmette is the name of a commuter railroad station in Wilmette, Illinois that is served by Metra's Union Pacific North Line. Trains go south to Ogilvie Transportation Center and as far north as Kenosha, Wisconsin. Travel time to Ogilvie is 31 minutes on local trains, and as little as 27 minutes on morning inbound trains and 22 minutes on one afternoon inbound train. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Wilmette is in zone C. As of 2018, Wilmette was the 18th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 1,653 weekday boardings.The station is located at Green Bay Road and Washington Avenue in Wilmette's central business district. It is also in close proximity to the Wilmette Village Hall. Northbound trains stop on the west platform and southbound trains stop on the east platform. The closest CTA Purple Line station is Linden, about a mile away. As of April 25, 2022, Wilmette is served by all 35 trains in each direction on weekdays, by 12 trains in each direction on Saturdays, and by all nine trains in each direction on Sundays.

The Orth House is a historic house located at 42 Abbotsford Road in Winnetka, Illinois. Walter Burley Griffin designed the Prairie School house, which was built in 1908. Griffin was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, and he designed the Orth House shortly after starting his own studio; the house consequently resembles Wright's work more closely than Griffin's later work does. The 1+1⁄2-story house's design features a stucco exterior with decorative stained wood, casement windows divided into geometric patterns, and an overall horizontal emphasis, all characteristic features of the Prairie School.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 8, 1976.

The Root-Badger House is a historic house at 326 Essex Road in Kenilworth, Illinois. The house was built in 1896 for music publisher Frank K. Root. Architect Daniel Burnham, who was the lead architect for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, designed the Neoclassical house. Burnham's work on the Columbian Exposition popularized Neoclassical architecture throughout the country, and his later works such as the Root-Badger House continued in this tradition. The house's design includes a two-story rounded portico supported by four Ionic columns, a balcony above the front door, an entablature with a dentillated cornice, and a balustrade encircling the roof.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 19, 1992.

Indian Hill is an unincorporated community in New Trier Township, Cook County, Illinois south of Winnetka. The center of the community is located near Indian Hill station on Green Bay Road. It is home to a small "downtown" section, near the train station by the intersection of Winnetka Avenue. It takes its name from a nearby golf club, and has a population of about 6,000.
