Long Island (Tennessee)

Douglass High School was an African-American high school in Kingsport, Tennessee that closed in 1966. At the time, it was the largest African-American school in Upper East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia and Southeast Kentucky, and the largest between Knoxville, Tennessee and Roanoke, Virginia. It was named for the great African-American statesman Frederick Douglass.

The Battle of Island Flats (also Battle at Long Island of the Holston, Battle of Eaton's Station) was the opening battle of the American War of Independence in the west. The battle was fought in July 1776, and pitted the American regional Patriot militia against the British allied Cherokee forces in the Overmountain region of the American frontier.

Kingsport is a city in Sullivan and Hawkins counties in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, its population was 55,442. Lying along the Holston River, Kingsport is commonly included in what is known as the Mountain Empire, which spans a portion of southwest Virginia and the mountainous counties in northeastern Tennessee. It is the largest city in the Kingsport–Bristol metropolitan area, which had a population of 307,614 in 2020. The metro area is a component of the larger Tri-Cities region of Tennessee and Virginia, with a population of 508,260 in 2020. The name "Kingsport" is a simplification of "King's Port", originally referring to the area on the Holston River known as King's Boat Yard, the head of navigation for the Tennessee Valley.

Bays Mountain Park is a 3,750 acres (15.2 km2) nature park and planetarium located on Bays Mountain in Kingsport, Tennessee. Founded in 1971, it features a 44 acre lake and 40 miles of hiking trails, a nature center with a planetarium theater, fire tower, and animal habitats. Its nature center and outdoor native animal displays include a bobcat, raptor center, wolf pen and captive and free-roaming white-tail deer. Wolf howling sessions are held regularly where visitors can experience the sounds of the gray wolf. There is also a herpetarium with reptiles and amphibians. The park also features an educational pontoon boat ride attraction that runs through the Bays Mountain Reservoir, called the Barge Ride.Other activities include hiking, orienteering, mountain biking, camping, and fishing. There is also an adventure course with a zip line and the Steadman Heritage Farmstead Museum, a 19th-century period living history farm museum. In 2017, the Pavilion at Lily Pad Cove was added for events rentals and special events and in 2019, 75 extra parking spots were added to alleviate peak season parking issues.

The Mountain Music Museum (a.k.a. the ACMA Mountain Music Museum) in Kingsport, Tennessee, was a museum dedicated to the history of music that originated primarily in East Tennessee, North Carolina, Southeast Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia during the 19th century and evolved into what is now generally recognized as bluegrass music and country music. The museum is owned and operated by the nonprofit Appalachian Cultural Music Association (ACMA). Exhibits include vintage musical instruments, recordings, photographs and other memorabilia. Among well-known 20th century performers who have exhibits in the museum are the Carter Family, the Stoneman Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Flatt & Scruggs, Mac Wiseman, The Stanley Brothers, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Mel Street, Archie Campbell and others. Originally based in Bristol, Tennessee, the museum is now located at 316 Broad Street in Kingsport.

WCSK (90.3 FM) is a non-commercial, educational FM radio station in Kingsport, Tennessee, licensed by the Federal Communications Commission to the Kingsport Board of Education. The radio studio is in Dobyns-Bennett High School. The WCSK radio transmitter is mounted on a tower atop Bays Mountain in Kingsport. It broadcasts at an effective radiated power of 195 watts. In addition to the city of Kingsport, the station's signal is heard in portions of Sullivan, Hawkins, and Washington counties in Tennessee, and in parts of Scott County, Virginia.

Dobyns-Bennett High School is a high school (grades 9–12) in Kingsport, Tennessee, United States. It typically educates around 2,400 students, although enrollment for the 2022–23 academic year exceeded 2,500 students. As a part of Kingsport City Schools, students must be city residents paying city taxes to attend. Students that are not residents of the city may pay a tuition fee to attend. This tuition is collected to account for tax differences between county and city residents in order to help subsidize the cost of school programs and facilities. Dobyns-Bennett features a variety of programs for students of all academic levels. The many classes offered cater to many types of students who may want to attend technical schools or universities across the nation.

The Netherland Inn and Complex is a historic house museum in Kingsport, Tennessee, United States. Built in 1802 to serve as a boat yard for salt distribution, the property was eventually sold, and in 1818 it became the Netherland Inn, serving travelers en route from Middle Tennessee to Western Kentucky. The inn and boatyard is the only place on the National Register of Historic Places that served as a stage stop and a boatyard.

Fort Henry Mall, formerly Kingsport Town Center, located in Kingsport, Tennessee, is the only regional shopping mall serving Kingsport. It was opened March 10, 1976, as a two-level mall located at the intersection of Fort Henry Drive and Memorial Boulevard. It is owned by Hull Property Group. The mall has two anchor stores: Belk and Dunham's Sports. Over 65 stores have been located in the mall. Many of the national mall chains have been operating here, as well as some local stores. There is no central food court in the mall, so the eating establishments are spread out throughout the mall.

Old Kingsport Presbyterian Church (formerly known as Boatyard Presbyterian Church and Kingsport Presbyterian Church) is an historic church located in Kingsport, Tennessee. The church was organized May 20, 1820 as the Boatyard Congregation. It is the oldest one of any denomination in the city of Kingsport. It is a member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Sullivan South High School was a public high school (grades 9–12) located in Kingsport, Tennessee, in Sullivan County with a student body of just under nine hundred students. The school was formed in 1980 and closed in 2021, when the building was converted to Sullivan Heights Middle School and its students were reapportioned to West Ridge High School. Greg Harvey served as principal of Sullivan South between 2003 and 2017, leading the school for 14 years all together. Josh Tate, formerly an assistant principal at Sullivan South High School, served as principal from 2017 until the school's closing. The school was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and was a member of the TSSAA. With a graduation rate of 98%, it was well above the state median for high school completion.
