Calhan, Colorado

Calhan Rock Island Railroad Depot is a historic railroad station located in Calhan, Colorado, United States. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad provided transportation between Colorado Springs and Kansas until it went into bankruptcy in the early 1970s. The depot, built in 1906, still stands on its original site. The rails were removed and sold for scrap by 1994.

The Calhan School District RJ-1 is a public school district serving in northeastern El Paso County, Colorado as well as parts of southern Elbert County. Serving a relatively small population, the entire educational range of the district, from preschool through twelfth grade, is housed on a single campus, along with all of the administrative functions. The school (and district) mascot is the bulldog.

The townsite is located at 39.1356°N 104.4569°W / 39.1356; -104.4569 (Bijou Basin) at an elevation of 6,398 feet (1,950 m). Travelers could take post road 49 to the settlement. It was located five miles southeast of another early settlement, Sidney.

At the United States Census 2020, the population of the Peyton CDP was 214.The nearby unincorporated area of Falcon also uses zip code 80831. Peyton and towns such as Falcon, Calhan, Ramah, Simla, and Matheson straddle U.S. Highway 24 between Colorado Springs and Limon, Colorado where US 24 intersects with Interstate 70.

The Black Squirrel Creek Bridge carries U.S. 24 over Black Squirrel Creek in El Paso County, Colorado. Prior to 2012, it was locally known as the "green bridge" or "old green bridge"—a historic single-span, Parker through truss bridge that was completed in 1935 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Because it no longer met highway safety standards, the bridge was dismantled and replaced by a newer span in 2012.
