Kellingley Colliery

Cridling Stubbs is a village and a civil parish in the Selby district, in the English county of North Yorkshire. It is near the town of Knottingley. Its population in 2011 was 152.The village was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974.A Romano-British hoard of 3,330 coins in a jar (the Cridling Stubbs Hoard) dating to the 4th century AD was found near the village in 1967.

Beal is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the River Aire, 3.5 miles (6 km) north-east of Knottingley, 8 miles (13 km) south-west of Selby, and 21 miles (34 km) south of York. The parish includes the village of Kellingley, and borders the City of Wakefield in West Yorkshire. At the 2001 census it had a population of 720, increasing to 738 at the 2011 census.

The Mary Towneley Loop is a 47-mile (76 km) circular route that forms part of the Pennine Bridleway National Trail, along the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire. The loop was opened in 2002, the first section of the Pennine Bridleway.It is named in memory of Mary, Lady Towneley, who drew attention to the poor state of England's bridleways and the need for a long-distance route for horse-riders by riding with two friends in September 1986 from Hexham in Northumberland to Ashbourne in Derbyshire. She died in 2001. The route joins the main Pennine Bridleway at two points, one near the village of Summit between Littleborough and Todmorden, and one just east of Worsthorne. Heading west from Summit the Loop climbs to Top of Leach at 474 metres (1,555 ft). The trail then passes through the town of Waterfoot in the Rossendale Valley and follows new tracks via Lumb before entering the Cliviger Gorge and then climbing up to the Long Causeway. It then heads north to rejoin the main Pennine Bridleway just east of Worsthorne. The Loop then follows the main route to enter West Yorkshire at Widdop, crosses Heptonstall Moor and drops down to cross the Calder Valley just west of the town of Hebden Bridge. The trail passes the villages of Mankinholes and Bottomley to return to Summit. An annual relay race, organized by Rossendale Harriers, took place in late January or early February until 2011. Teams consisting of five pairs of runners race over five relay legs completed the entire 47 miles and 6,400 feet of ascent of the loop, clockwise from Fearns Sports College in Stacksteads. The last race in 2011 took place on 30 January and hosted 109 teams, 1,090 individual runners from clubs across the north of England, and was won by Salford Harriers.

St Mary's Church is the parish church of Birkin, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The church was built in the 12th century, and survives largely intact from the period. A south aisle was added in the 14th century, when the top stage of the tower was also added. The church was restored in 1882 by John Oldrid Scott. It was Grade I listed in 1967. The church is built of limestone with a stone slate roof, and has a wooden porch. It consists of a two-bay nave with a south aisle, a chancel and apse, and a west tower. The tower has two stages, slits in the lower stage, bands, the upper one with gargoyles, two-light bell openings, and an embattled parapet with pinnacles. On the south front is a later timber porch, and a Norman doorway of four orders with various carvings, and three colonnettes with capitals decorated with interlace and scallops. The nave has an embattled parapet, and around the body of the church is a corbel table with carvings including humans, masks, and animals. There are a variety of windows, some square headed, some round headed, and the east window has three lights and tracery. The east window of the south aisle has some 14th century stained glass. Inside the church is a 14th-century effigy of a man holding his heart in his hand. There is a 14th-century grave slab in the south aisle, and some 17th and 18th century monuments. There is a piscina in the south aisle with an ogee arch, and the font is dated 1663, but on an earlier base. In the churchyard is a Roman coffin, which is Grade II listed.

Birkin is a village and civil parish in the south-west of the Selby district of North Yorkshire, England. It is north of the River Aire, near Beal, North Yorkshire. The closest town is Knottingley, in West Yorkshire, 4 miles (6 km) to the south-west. The parish had a population of 146 at the 2001 census, which fell to 141 at the 2011 census. Until 1974, it was part of the West Riding district of Yorkshire.

De Lacy Academy (formerly Knottingley High School) is a mixed secondary school located in Knottingley in the City of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England.Previously a community school administered by Wakefield Council, Knottingley High School converted to academy status in April 2012 and was renamed De Lacy Academy. The school is part of Delta Academies Trust, but continues to coordinate with Wakefield Council for admissions. De Lacy Academy offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils.

The Church of St Edmund King and Martyr, Kellington, is a grade I listed 12th century church in the village of Kellington, North Yorkshire, England. Excavations at the site have revealed the 14th century tomb related to the Knights Templar, and in the 1990s, the foundations of the church were underpinned because of possible subsidence effects from the nearby Kellingley Colliery. Its separation from the village upon elevated land, makes it a local landmark and it has been commented upon throughout history. A stone with Medieval carvings upon it was found in the church and has given rise to a legend attached to it about a shepherd fighting a snake. The Kellington Serpent-Stone is one of the attractions of the church.

Knottingley Town Hall is a municipal building in Weeland Road, Knottingley, West Yorkshire, England. The structure, which served as the headquarters of Knottingley Urban District Council, now operates as a community centre.

The Stapleton Colony, based in Stapleton, North Yorkshire, is a Christian pacifist and anarchist community, and the only remaining colony of the Brotherhood Church. By 2016 the population of the colony had declined to four residents.In 1897 several members of the Brotherhood Church, some from a Quaker background, moved to Leeds. The receipt of a legacy left to a member, Lillian Ferris, enabled the group to relocate to a seven and a half acre smallholding at Stapleton in 1921.The Stapleton community are vegetarian, grow much of their own organic food and attempt to live independently from the government. They are affiliated to the Peace Pledge Union, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and War Resisters' International. Residents have included Len W. Gibson (1919–2007) who was a lifelong peace campaigner and conscientious objector.

Stapleton is a village in the Selby district of North Yorkshire, England. The population taken at the 2011 Census was less than 100. Details are included in the civil parish of Womersley. It is situated approximately 3 miles (5 km) south-east from the towns of Pontefract and Knottingley. Stapleton Park was the subject of a well-known painting of the Victorian era by John Atkinson Grimshaw. Stapleton is home to the Stapleton Colony of the Brotherhood Church.

Womersley is a village in North Yorkshire, England. The parish population at the 2011 census (including Stapleton and Walden Stubbs) was 515. It is near the towns of Selby, Askern and Pontefract. It is close to the borders with South and West Yorkshire. The village was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1 April 1974, when it became part of the Selby District of North Yorkshire. On 1 April 2023, Selby District was abolished and Womersley became part of the new North Yorkshire unitary authority area.
