Meppel is the smallest municipality in Drenthe, with a total area of about 57 km2 (22 sq mi). As of 1 July 2021, it had a population of 34,506 with over 30,000 inhabitants within city limits. People born in Meppel are occasionally referred to as Meppeler Muggen in Dutch; this translates as 'mosquitoes from Meppel'. The nickname comes from a traditional folk tale. The people of Meppel thought the church tower was on fire, but after closer inspection, they realised it was only a swarm of mosquitoes.

Punthorst (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈpʏnt.ɦɔrst]) is a hamlet in the Dutch municipality of Staphorst in Overijssel. As of 2021, it had a population of 970.Punthorst is a relatively young residential area, which mostly emerged in the 1930s. The place was first attested as de Punt in 1830–1855. Punthorst itself is most likely a compound of punt ('point') and horst ('overgrown elevated place').

The Tomb of Lepejou is the oldest Muslim burial site in the Netherlands, dating back to 1828. The grave is located on the Huize Arnichem Estate outside the hamlet of Haerst, which is under the municipal jurisdiction of Zwolle.

Zwartewaterland (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌzʋɑrtəˈʋaːtərlɑnt] ) is a municipality in the province Overijssel in the eastern Netherlands.

Baarlo is a small village in the eastern Netherlands. It is located in the municipality Zwartewaterland, Overijssel, about 4 km northeast of the town of Zwartsluis. The village lies on the Meppelerdiep canal between Zwartsluis and Meppel. The village is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Zwartsluis. In 1840, it was home to 75 people. Nowadays, the population is estimated at 20.There is another village with the same name in Overijsel, about 15 km to the northwest.

Halfweg is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality of Staphorst, about 4 km northeast of that town.

Hasselt is a city in the municipality of Zwartewaterland about 7 km (4.3 mi) north of Zwolle, in the Dutch province of Overijssel. After it received city rights in 1252, it became a member of the Hanseatic League around 1350. The city suffered an economic downfall from about 1550 on, as other cities proved to be better situated and equipped for trade and commerce. In 2001 the municipalities of Hasselt, Genemuiden and Zwartsluis were united in the municipality of Zwartewaterland, of which Hasselt became the administrative centre. As of 1 January 2021, Hasselt had a population of 7,385.
