Montenegro is a municipality of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. As of 2022, it has 64,322 inhabitants. The town was established in 1847 to be settled primarily by German immigrants from the Hunsrück region of southwest Germany. The local language was Riograndenser Hunsrückisch for most of its history, and it is still spoken there after 150 years of the initial settlement. Today, however, Portuguese prevails, mostly as a result of the campaign of the "Nacionalização" (Nationalization) forcefully imposed on all German and Italian settled areas of southern Brazil by president and dictator Getúlio Vargas in the 1940s.

The principal university is the University of Caxias do Sul, often abbreviated as UCS. Through the middle of the city runs the river Caí, whose source is in the mountains of São Francisco de Paula, and which empties into Guaíba Lake. The city was founded on May 1, 1875. Like many towns in the state which were settled by German-speaking Europeans in the 19th century, the German language is still present in daily family and community life, if not as much in the public sphere since World War II.

The river basin contains the São Francisco de Paula National Forest, a 1,616-hectare (3,990-acre) sustainable use conservation area created in 1968.
