Pulkovo Observatory

The Pulkovo meridian, which passes through the center of the main building of the Pulkovo Observatory and is at 30°19,6‘ east of Greenwich, was the point of departure for all former geographical maps of Russia.This meridian was used as the reference in the Russian Empire before the Prime meridian (Greenwich).

Pulkovo Heights (Russian: Пу́лковские высо́ты) is a chain of hills located to the south of Saint Petersburg. They run to the south-west in the direction of the Izhora Plateau and have an altitude of up to 73 meters. In Neolithic times (about 7500–5000 years ago) Pulkovo heights were Littorina Sea coast. Its bottom is a modern Neva Lowland with stretching on her St. Petersburg. The ancient sea gradually retreated and took the place of the current Baltic Sea. Apparently, the place abounded with impassable forests and swamps. Thick forest covered the Pulkovo heights, but it was gradually cut down. In the 18th century, located at the foot of Pulkovo village of Gallerovo, Tolmachevo, Pesky, Lower and Upper Koyerovo, Kamen, Kiskino, Glinyanaya Gora, a neighborhood on the site of Pulkovo – Pulkovo village, founded in 1714 at the Pulkovo Manor. A road ran from Pulkovo Koporye in Ladoga. On 12 November 1917, during the October Revolution, Alexander Kerensky and Pyotr Krasnov, commanding 700 Cossacks of the 3rd Cavalry Corps, were forced to retreat back to Gatchina Palace after being stopped at Pulkovo Heights by Red forces.The hills were used as a natural defense line during the Russian Civil War and the siege of Leningrad, when the Germans occupied the hills from September 1941 to January 1944. It is the location of the Pulkovo Observatory and the industrial suburb of Shushary.

Shosseynaya railway station (Russian: Станция Шоссейная) is a railway station in October Railway in Saint Petersburg. It is located in the Moskovsky District of Saint Petersburg at the intersection of Pulkovo Highway and Ring Road. The name given to Kiev (now this part is called Pulkovo) highway. It was originally located on the Warsaw branch north of the current location. The base station acts as a cargo station. For the employees of the station on it stops the passing of the trains, embarkation and disembarkation are made from official vestibule of the head car. In 1967, when the Warsaw railway line merged with the Baltic, dismantling the railway on Warsaw street. Platform "Airport" was opened on the connecting line, located on the other side of the Kiev highway. After that, the station was used only for cargo. Apparently, in the same period, the station moved to the south of the former location. According to the station it was given the original name of the airport of Leningrad (now "Pulkovo") - highway.

Alexandrovskaya (Russian: Александровская) is a municipal settlement in Pushkinsky District of the federal city of St. Petersburg, Russia. Population: 2,491 (2010 Census); 1,184 (2002 Census); 2,960 (1989 Census).

Moskovsky District (Russian: Моско́вский райо́н) is a district of the federal city of St. Petersburg, Russia. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 288,744; up from 275,884 recorded in the 2002 Census.

The Krylov State Research Center (Russian: Крыловский государственный научный центр) is a Russian shipbuilding research and development institute, which operates as a federal state-owned unitary enterprise. The institute is named after Aleksey Krylov, the Russian naval designer and mathematician who was one of its first superintendents, and is based in Saint Petersburg.

The Squeaky Wheel (a nickname given by radio listeners) is a utility shortwave radio station that broadcasts a distinctive sound. From around 2000 until 2008 the station's attention tone was a high-pitched two tone signal that vaguely resembled a squeaky wheel. From 2008 the channel marker changed to two different tones in a short sequence repeated with a short silent gap. The frequencies were 5473 kHz (day) and 3828 kHz (night). Several times voice messages in Russian military format have been reported. The exact transmitter site is unknown, but is thought to be near Rostov-on-Don, Russia. The signal strength is weak in Central Europe and the signal sometimes even disappears for days in the noise. Other frequencies observed are 3650 kHz, 3815 kHz, 5474 kHz, and 5641 kHz.The Enigma designation is S32 with S indicating Slavic language. However, from 2000 to 2005 it was designated XSW when voice on the station was unknown.

Babolovo or Babolovka was a dacha (myza) of Prince Potemkin in Tsarskoe Selo. It was in 1780 that Catherine II of Russia presented the grounds adjoining the Catherine Park and the Alexander Park to her then-favourite, Potemkin. A temporary wooden palace was built to house the lovers' trysts. It was rebuilt in stone to a Gothic Revival design by Ilya Neyelov between 1782 and 1785. The Babolovsky Palace was essentially a summerhouse with seven rooms giving on to a park, a quaint octagonal tower and no second floor. Alexander I of Russia used the palace for his furtive rendezvous with Sophia Velho, a court banker's daughter. He commissioned Vasily Stasov to redesign the palace. The tower was replaced with a huge bath hewn from a red granite monolith. Engineer Agustín de Betancourt had it placed within the room before the walls were constructed. The bath weighed 48 tons and was 196 cm high. The palace fell into disrepair after the Russian Revolution and currently stands in ruins. The granite bath mentioned in one of Pushkin's first poems is still in situ. Other structures in the Babolovsky Park (which covers some 300 ha) have disappeared, apart from an aqueduct from the 1770s and Adam Menelaws' gate separating the two parks.

Zvyozdnaya (Russian: Звёздная) is a station on the Moskovsko-Petrogradskaya Line of the Saint Petersburg Metro. It was opened on December 25, 1972. It was designed by K.N. Afonskya, A.C. Getskin and V.P. Shuvalova. In the original blueprints, the station was called "Imeni Lensoveta" (Soviet of Leningrad Honorary station).

Pushkin (Russian: Пу́шкин) is a municipal town in Pushkinsky District of the federal city of St. Petersburg, Russia, located 24 kilometers (15 mi) south from the center of St. Petersburg proper, and its railway station, Tsarskoye Selo, is directly connected by railway to the Vitebsky Rail Terminal of the city. Population: 92,889 (2010 Census).Pushkin was founded in 1710 as an imperial residence named Tsarskoye Selo (Russian: Ца́рское Село́, lit. 'Tsar's Village') and received status of a town in 1808. The first public railways in Russia, Tsarskoye Selo Railways, were opened here in 1837 and connected the town to the capital, St. Petersburg. After the October Revolution, the town was renamed to Detskoye Selo (Russian: Де́тское Село́, romanized: Children's Village). Its name was further changed in 1937 to Pushkin to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. The town contains an ensemble of the 18th century Tsarskoye Selo. This museum complex includes the Catherine Palace, Alexander Palace and other buildings and associated parks; it is a major tourist attraction in the area and is included in the list of monuments protected by the UNESCO.

Pushkin Leningrad State University (Russian: Ленинградский государственный университет имени А.С. Пушкина) is a university in Russia, located in Pushkin, Saint Petersburg. It was established in 1992 as Leningrad Oblast Pedagogical Institute. It provides training at all levels of post secondary education including bachelor degree, master's degree, PhD courses as well as vocational training and continuing education courses. In 1999 the university was given its current name after the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.
