SHS is part of Sherrard Community Unit School District 200, which also includes Matherville Intermediate School, and Sherrard and Winola Elementary Schools. The campus is located approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Sherrard, just north of the Mercer-Rock Island county line, 10 miles (16 km) south of Milan, and serves a mixed village and rural residential community. The school is a short commute to the Quad Cities and part of the Davenport-Moline-Rock Island, IA-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The Sherrard Banking Company is a historic bank located at 314 Third Street in the village of Sherrard, Illinois. David Sherrard had the bank built in 1896, two years after he founded the village. The two-story brick building has a Late Victorian commercial design. The main entrance is at the front corner of the building; a pyramidal tower projects from the steep roof above the entrance. The building's decorations includes an arched entrance and stone window sills and lintels; its relative lack of ornamentation signifies the shift away from the elaborate features widely used earlier in the Victorian period. The first floor of the building was used for the bank, while the second held private professional offices, a common configuration at the time.The bank was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 16, 1996.

The village of Coal Valley is located in both Rock Island County and Henry County in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 3,743 at the 2010 census, up from 3,606 in 2000. It is mostly residential, housing families who work in or out of the greater Quad Cities Area and is considered a suburb. The students of the Rock Island County part of Coal Valley attend the Moline School District number 40, and in the Henry County portion, Orion Community Unit School District 223 Oakwood Country Club, located in Coal Valley, was host of the Hardee's Golf Classic from 1986 through 1994. The tournament was later renamed to "John Deere Classic" once sponsorship was taken over by Deere & Company. The tournament is now hosted at the TPC at Deere Run course in Silvis, Illinois.

Quad Cities International Airport (IATA: MLI, ICAO: KMLI, FAA LID: MLI) is a public airport in Rock Island County, Illinois, three miles (5 km) south of Moline, partly in Blackhawk Township and partly in Coal Valley Township. In 2012 it was named "Illinois Primary Airport of the Year".The airport does not have any international commercial passenger flights; its international designation is due to being an official port of entry and having a Foreign Trade Zone and U.S. Customs Office, enabling international cargo shipments and international general aviation passenger flights. The airport is directly south of the Quad-City Seaplane Base, which is located on the Rock River, Quad Cities International's northern boundary.

Niabi Zoo is a public Zoological Park in Coal Valley, Illinois, serving the Quad Cities Area. This 40 acre zoo is nestled inside its 287 acre forest preserve. The exploration of this picturesque setting guides guests through the discovery of more than 600 (previously 800) animals representing nearly 200 animal species from around the world. Niabi Zoo is open for general admission April–October annually and offers robust education and outreach programs year round. Niabi is one of six facilities owned and operated by the Rock Island County Forest Preserve District.

The station broadcasts at a power of 520 watts during daylight hours and 20 watts during nighttime hours. WDLM's studio and transmitter are located on E200th Street in rural Henry County, Illinois, just outside Coal Valley. Sister station WDLM-FM 89.3 also has its studio at this location. Both WDLM and WDLM-FM are O&O's of their parent network, the Moody Radio Network, which is owned by the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago. In 2019, Moody announced it intends to sell the station. According to the frequencies shown on the WDLM website, AM 960 kHz carries Spanish-language programming.
