Lakes of Covadonga

Lake Enol is a small highland lake in the Principality of Asturias, Spain. It is located in the Picos de Europa Western Massif, Cantabrian Mountains. It is next to Lake Ercina and together, they form the group known as Lakes of Covadonga, inside the Picos de Europa National Park. Lake Enol is the larger of the two. It is situated approximately 10 km from Covadonga and 25 km from Cangas de Onís. A curving road is available from Arriondas to the lake. Measuring 0.1 square kilometres (0.039 sq mi), it is one of the biggest lakes in the area. Lake Enol is situated 1,070 metres (3,510 ft) above sea level, in the Picos de Europa). It was formed by the withdrawal of a front glacier.

Lake Ercina is a small highland lake in Asturias, Spain. It is located in the Picos de Europa, in the Cantabrian Mountains. Situated next to Lake Enol, together, they forms the group known as Lakes of Covadonga within the Picos de Europa National Park. Lake Ercina is smaller than Lake Enol. It is situated at an altitude of 1,108 metres (3,635 ft) and its maximum depth is just over 2 metres (6 ft 7 in). The eutrophic lake covers approximately 8 hectares (20 acres). Its characteristics are tied to its glacier origin and geographic location.

Onís is a municipality and a parish in the Autonomous Community of the Principality of Asturias, Spain. The municipality is bordered on the north by Llanes, on the south by the province of León, to the east by Cabrales and to the west by Cangas de Onís. The area of the municipality is 75 km2, being more of a third of its territory in the Picos de Europa National Park. The population is dispersed over various population centers, being its capital de Benia de Onís. In 2007, the population is of 920 inhabitants, increasing remarkably during holiday times. The source of the Güeña River, main affluent of the Sella River, is lowest point of the municipality with 175 m. Part of the Picos de Europa, the Pico de Verdilluenga is the highest point of the municipality with 2,129 m. The municipality consists of three parishes: Onís: including the settlements of Benia (Benia de Onís), Avín, El Castru, Los Menores, Pandellavandes, Silviella, Talaveru, Villar. Bobia: including the settlements of Bobia de Abajo (Bovia Baxu), Bobia de Arriba (Bovia Riba), Demués, Gamonéu. La Robellada: including the settlements of La Robellada and El Pedroso (Pedrosu)

The Royal Collegiate church of San Fernando (Spanish: Real Colegiata de San Fernando) is a collegiate church located in the parish of Covadonga, Cangas de Onís, Asturias, Spain. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1884.It is the oldest building in the Sanctuary of Covadonga and is located next to the Holy Cave.

The Basílica de Santa María la Real de Covadonga(English: Basilica of Holy Mary, the Queen of Covadonga) is a Catholic church located in Covadonga/Cuadonga, Cangas de Onís/Cangues d'Onís, Asturias, Spain, that was designated as a basilica on September 11, 1901. The temple was designed by the German architect Roberto Frassinelli and built between 1877 and 1901 by architect Federico Aparici y Soriano. It is a Neo-Romanesque church made entirely of pink limestone.

Grazanes is one of eleven parishes (administrative divisions) in Cangas de Onís, a municipality within the province and autonomous community of Asturias, by northern Spain's Picos de Europa mountains.

Our Lady of Covadonga also named "La Santina" is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the name of a Marian shrine devoted to her at Covadonga, Asturias. The shrine in northwestern Spain rose to prominence following the Battle of Covadonga in about 720, which was the first defeat of the Moors during their invasion of Spain. A statue of the Virgin Mary, hidden in one of the caves, was believed to have miraculously aided the Christian victory. Our Lady of Covadonga is the co-patron of Asturias, and a basilica was built to house the current statue. Her feast day is 8 September, as it is also the autonomic day of Asturias.

Covadonga (Asturian: Cuadonga, from cova domnica "Cave of Our Lady") is one of 11 parishes in Cangas de Onís, a municipality within the province and autonomous community of Asturias, in Northwestern Spain. It is situated in the Picos de Europa mountains. With a permanent population of 58 (2008), it consists essentially of the "Real Sitio de Covadonga"/"Real Sitiu de Cuadonga" also known as the "cradle of Spain", a pilgrimage site dedicated to Our Lady of Covadonga/Cuadonga and commemorating the Battle of Covadonga of 718/722.

The Battle of Covadonga took place in 722 between the army of Pelagius the Visigoth and the army of the Umayyad Caliphate. Fought near Covadonga, in the Picos de Europa, it resulted in a victory for the forces of Pelagius. It is traditionally regarded as the foundational event of the Kingdom of Asturias and thus the initial point of the Christian Reconquista ("reconquest") of Spain after the Umayyad conquest of 711.

The Santa Cueva de Nuestra Señora de Covadonga (English: the Holy Cave of Our Lady of Covadonga) is a Catholic sanctuary located in Asturias, northern Spain. It is a cave in the Picos de Europa mountains, which gives its name to the parish of Covadonga in the municipality of Cangas de Onís. The name refers to the sanctuary, dedicated to the Virgin of Covadonga, where the first battle of the Spanish Reconquest took place in 718.
