The Clayton County Public School District (CCPS) is a fully Cognia accredited public school district headquartered in Jonesboro, Georgia, U.S. It administers schools inside of Clayton County, Georgia. Serving more than 52,000 students, Clayton County Public Schools is ranked among the 100 largest school districts in the United States and is the fifth-largest school system in Georgia.The system has 39 primary/elementary schools (including one public charter), 17 middle schools (including one public charter), 12 high schools, one alternative education center, one psychological education center, and one multi-purpose education center. Included in this number are five school-wide magnet schools, 12 magnet programs, one state-certified STEM program, one Cognia (AdvancED) certified STEM program, and two International Baccalaureate Candidate schools. The majority of Clayton County's students are African American and Hispanic. However, there is also a diverse minority with 90 different ethnicities and countries represented. Based the National Center For Education Statistics, 23% of CCPS students live in families making income below the poverty line, and 47% live with single parents.As of the 2019–2020 school year, over 12,000 students speak a language other than English and over 6,000 are counted as English language learners. Spanish and Vietnamese are the two most spoken languages besides English.

The Battle of Jonesborough (August 31–September 1, 1864) was fought between Union Army forces led by William Tecumseh Sherman and Confederate forces under William J. Hardee during the Atlanta Campaign in the American Civil War. On the first day, on orders from Army of Tennessee commander John Bell Hood, Hardee's troops attacked the Federals and were repulsed with heavy losses. That evening, Hood ordered Hardee to send half his troops back to Atlanta. On the second day, five Union corps converged on Jonesborough (modern name: Jonesboro). For the only time during the Atlanta Campaign, a major Federal frontal assault succeeded in breaching the Confederate defenses. The attack took 900 prisoners, but the defenders were able to halt the breakthrough and improvise new defenses. Despite facing overwhelming odds, Hardee's corps escaped undetected to the south that evening. Thwarted in his earlier attempts to force Hood to abandon Atlanta, Sherman resolved to make a sweep to the south with six of his seven infantry corps. His objective was to block the Macon and Western Railroad which was the last uncut railroad leading into Atlanta. Three corps from Sherman's army got within artillery range of the railroad at Jonesborough and Hood reacted by sending two of his three infantry corps to drive them away. While the fighting at Jonesborough was going on, two more Union corps blocked the railroad on August 31. When Hood found that Atlanta's railroad lifeline was severed, he evacuated the city on the evening of September 1. Atlanta was occupied by Union troops the next day and the Atlanta campaign was concluded. Although Hood's army was not destroyed, the fall of Atlanta had far-reaching political as well as military effects on the course of the war.

Patrick R. Cleburne Confederate Cemetery is a memorial cemetery located in the city of Jonesboro, Georgia, United States. It was named in honor of General Patrick Cleburne. This cemetery was a burial site for Confederate soldiers who died in the Battle of Jonesboro in 1864. This cemetery is open daily until dusk. It is one of six Confederate cemeteries maintained by the Georgia Building Authority.After the Battle of Jonesboro, fallen soldiers under leadership of Stephen D. Lee and William J. Hardee were buried as unknown soldiers where they initially died at. In 1872, after the American Civil War ended, the Georgia General Assembly funded $1,000 so that the soldiers could be relocated and reburied in a general area. Initially, each grave was marked with a tin marker; however, by the 1930s, the markers were gone. The Patrick R. Cleburne Confederate Cemetery has 712 headstones with only three marked headstones. The three known soldiers in this cemetery are Agnatius Brooke, Robert Lindsay and Abner Joel Yancey. The headstones are patterned in the shape of the Confederate Flag. The walkways are shaped in the letter X and graves fill in the triangles of the X.It is estimated that 600–1000 Confederate soldiers are buried here. The history behind this cemetery and other confederate cemeteries in Georgia is a mystery and continues to be researched today. Organizations continue to preserve historic documents and present new information to understand the history of Georgia and its confederate soldiers during the American Civil War.

Jonesboro is a city in and the county seat of Clayton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 4,724 as of the 2010 census. The city's name was originally spelled Jonesborough. During the Civil War, the final skirmish in the Atlanta Campaign was fought here south of Atlanta, cutting off the city and forcing the mayor of Atlanta to surrender at Marietta in early September 1864. The final fall of Atlanta in the Battle of Jonesborough ended up being a decisive point in the nation's history, propelling Abraham Lincoln to re-election two months later, and continuing the war until the Confederacy finally surrendered the following year.

Jonesboro Historic District in Jonesboro, Georgia is a historic district that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1972.Jonesboro was the setting of much of the 1936 novel Gone with the Wind; the fictional houses Tara and Twelve Oaks were placed near it, in Clayton County.It includes Stately Oaks, also separately listed on the NRHP, which is believed to be the inspiration for Tara.It includes the Clayton County Courthouse.

Jonesboro High School is a four-year public high school located in Jonesboro, Georgia, United States. The school is part of the Clayton County School District, and is located at 7728 Mt. Zion Boulevard. The school's teams are known as the Cardinals, and the school colors are red, white, and black. U.S. News & World Report selected Jonesboro as one of the top 100 schools in the United States in its December 1998 issue. The school has produced several notable alumni. Established as a public high school on September 21, 1891, Jonesboro High School was originally located on College Street. The school was moved to Spring Street during the Christmas break of 1917 and moved again to its present location on the corner of Mt. Zion Boulevard in the fall of 1963.

The Clayton County Courthouse in Jonesboro, Georgia is a historic courthouse. It was designed by J.W. Golucke.This or a predecessor courthouse was designed by Maximilien van den Corput (c. 1825 – 1911), also known as Max Corput, a Belgian-American architect.The Twiggs County Courthouse and the Madison County Courthouse (Danielsville, Georgia) (1901), both designed by J.W. Golucke, have been noted to be similar.It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing building in the Jonesboro Historic District. In 1980, it was in use as a court offices building.A previous courthouse was destroyed in the August 20, 1864 cavalry raid of Judson Kilpatrick, which burned most of the town.

Stately Oaks Plantation is a Greek Revival antebellum mansion located in Margaret Mitchell Memorial Park in Jonesboro, Georgia. Built in 1839, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It is also known as Orr House, The Oaks, and Robert McCord House and it is included in the Jonesboro Historic District. Stately Oaks is owned by Historical Jonesboro/Clayton County Inc., and features the period house, the home's separate log kitchen, a well house, a tenant house, an 1896 country store, and a one-room schoolhouse. The house, along with Rural Home, was believed to be the inspiration for Tara, the legendary home of Scarlett O'Hara and her family in Margaret Mitchell's novel Gone with the Wind.

Elite Scholars Academy is located at 7923 Fielder Road in Jonesboro, Georgia, United States. It is part of Clayton County Public Schools. Elite Scholars Academy (ESA) is a 6–12 Early College Magnet School within the Clayton County Public School District. Renowned for its rigorous academic environment, the school is also a certified Cambridge Assessment International institution. Founded in 2009 as a public charter school, ESA transitioned from a charter school to a magnet school in 2016. In 2016, ESA relocated to its current state-of-the-art campus in Jonesboro. At a cost of $22.2 million investment, the Fielder Road facility is designed to support up to 700 students with modern resources.

Southlake Mall is a shopping mall located in Morrow, Georgia, United States. The mall is in Clayton County and its trade area includes Henry County, one of the fastest-growing areas in Georgia. The mall is located along Interstate 75 and State Highway 54, also known as Jonesboro Road.

Arrowhead Pawn Shop is a pawn shop and part of the Iron Pipeline. It was founded in 1991 and is located in Jonesboro, Georgia. The store was described as the most significant source outside of New York State of guns recovered by the New York Police Department in 2009. After a gun from the shop was used in the murders of two New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers, The New York Times reported that Arrowhead ranked fifth on the U.S.-wide list of legal sources of guns used in crimes. The newspaper quoted an anonymous federal official as stating that "[Arrowhead] were like a Crazy Eddie of gun dealers. They had a lot of volume and they did a lot of business." The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence describes Arrowhead as a "notorious 'bad apple' gun dealer", having sold over 1720 guns that were subsequently used in crimes. Arrowhead Pawn Shop was rebuilt in 2007 following a fire; retail space quadrupled from 2,000 square feet to 8,000 square feet in the new premises. As of 2014, the store's chief executive is Arthur Banks. The shop describes itself as "a family owned business dedicated to good prices, good customer service and good vibes".

Morrow is a city in Clayton County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Its population was 6,445 at the 2010 census, up from 4,882 in 2000. It is the home of Clayton State University and the Georgia Archives.
