Meltonby

Yapham is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, Northern England. It is situated about 2 miles (3.2 km) north-east of Pocklington. The parish includes the hamlet of Meltonby and is approximately 1,830 acres (740 ha).The village was originally known as Iapun / Lapun and the first reference of the village can be found in the Domesday Book (1086). The village was later known as Yapome with further references in Ancient Petitions, Henry III – James I (1390) when William Lokton petitioned the King for the restoration of the manor of Bolton and other property in Yapome (Yapham). It is not known when the current spelling of the name was adopted. The village Church, St Martin's, is a small church was partially rebuilt in 1777–8. It consists of chancel and nave, with a western turret, containing one bell. The church was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1967 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. The Wesleyans built a chapel in 1865 however this has been converted into a private house in the 1980s. A school has served the village and surrounding area since before 1773 with a new school built in 1875 to accommodate up to 45 children. The school closed in 1972 with the remaining children transferring to St Martin's Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School in Fangfoss. The old school buildings are now used as a village hall. Yapham was served by Yapham Gate railway station on the York–Beverley line for a short while between 1855 and 1865. The population of Yapham has remained reasonably unchanged for many years with the 1891 UK census identifying a population of 191 with the 2001 UK census identifying a population of 175. Since 2001, however there have been a number of new houses built in the village. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 Census was shown as 217. Although the civil parish is called "Yapham" its parish council is called "Yapham cum Meltonby Parish Council".Yapham was formerly a township and chapelry in the parish of Pocklington, in 1866 it became a civil parish as Yapham cum Meltonby, on 1 April 1935 the parish was renamed to "Yapham".Yapham Cricket Club has been playing at the Cricket Ground on the edge of the village for almost 100 years and is one of only a few clubs to play on through the war. The club now has a strong junior section as well as both Men's and Ladies Senior Teams. The Gravel Pit Allotment Association was formed in 2009 to convert the old gravel pit field in between Yapham and Meltonby into community allotments.

Bishop Wilton is a small village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 4 miles (6 km) north of Pocklington and 6 miles (10 km) east of Stamford Bridge. The civil parish is formed by the village of Bishop Wilton and the hamlets of Gowthorpe and Youlthorpe. According to the 2011 UK census, Bishop Wilton parish had a population of 554 in 227 households, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 500 in 199 households. Just north of the village lies Bishop Wilton Wold, more commonly referred to as Garrowby Hill. At 807 feet (246 m) above sea level, it is the highest point on the Yorkshire Wolds. Through the centre of Bishop Wilton runs a shallow beck, flanked on both sides by open grass verges. The village has a local shop, a small primary school, an art gallery with screen printing workshop, and the Fleece Inn public house. St Edith's, the medieval Church of England parish church, is dedicated to Edith of Wilton. The church was restored in 1858–59 with internal embellishment to designs by J. L. Pearson. It was designated a Grade I listed building in January 1967 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. The church is on the Sykes Churches Trail devised by the East Yorkshire Churches Group. Around the village there are walks on the Wolds with views across the Vale of York.

Great Givendale is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 3 miles (5 km) north of Pocklington. Great Givendale forms part of the civil parish of Millington. The church, dedicated to Saint Ethelburgh, was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1967 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England.The Minster Way and Chalkland Way long-distance footpaths pass through the main street of the village. There is also a scout camp located near the hamlet, which is a green field campsite.In 1823 Great Givendale was a village and civil parish, in the Wapentake of Harthill and the Liberty of St Peter's, that included the settlement of Little Givendale. The church was under the patronage of the Dean of York. Parish population at the time was 60, which included four farmers and a gentleman.

All Saints’ Church, Pocklington is the Anglican parish church for the town of Pocklington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is also known locally as the Cathedral of the Wolds, it is an important Grade I listed building, dating mainly from the 12th to the 15th century. It is a constituent parish of the Diocese of York.

Pocklington is a market town and civil parish at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. At the 2021 Census, its population was 10,123. It lies 13 miles (21 km) east of York, and 22 miles (35 km) northwest of Hull. The town's skyline is marked by the 15th-century tower of All Saints' parish church. The ecclesiastical parish includes the hamlet of Kilnwick Percy.

Beckhead Plantation is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and nature reserve in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is located close to the village of Great Givendale on the Yorkshire Wolds. The site, which was designated a SSSI in 1968, is managed as a nature reserve by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. It lies on chalk land in Given Dale. The site is important because it demonstrates many of the characteristic features of a northern ash woodland on chalk. The tree canopy is dominated by ash with some wych elm, field maple and rowan while the understorey contains shrub species including hazel, guelder rose, elder, gooseberry and fly honeysuckle.

Pocklington School is a private day and boarding school in Pocklington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was founded in 1514 by John Dolman. The school is situated in 50 acres (20 ha) of land, on the outskirts of the small market town, 12 miles (19 km) from York and 26 miles (42 km) from Hull. It is the 67th oldest school in the United Kingdom and celebrated its 500th birthday in 2014.

Pocklington railway station was a station on the York to Beverley Line that served the town of Pocklington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It opened on 4 October 1847 and closed after the last train on 27 November 1965.The station trainshed, designed by George Townsend Andrews, is a Grade II listed building and now forms the sports hall of Pocklington School. The front entrance to the building now serves as one of the bays of Pocklington Bus Station which serves the EYMS bus service towards York from Hull, Beverley, Market Weighton, Driffield and Bridlington.

Bolton is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Fangfoss, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 10 miles (16 km) to the east of the city of York and 3 miles (5 km) north-west of the town of Pocklington. In 1931 the parish had a population of 130. Bolton was formerly a township in the parish of Bishop Wilton, from 1866 Bolton was a civil parish in its own right, on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Fangfoss, part also went to form Bishop Wilton.Bolton has an active local history society.

Royal Air Force Pocklington or more simply RAF Pocklington was an operational flying station of the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, forming part of RAF Bomber Command, and operating primarily Vickers Wellington and Handley Page Halifax bombers. The station, adjacent to the town of Pocklington at grid reference SE790485, opened in 1941, and was closed in 1946. After a return to agricultural use, the station now forms an industrial estate and a restricted use airfield for a gliding club.

Burnby Hall Gardens, also known as Stewart's Burnby Hall Gardens and Museum, are located close to the centre of Pocklington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. They are home to the United Kingdom's national collection of hardy water lilies, and contain the largest such collection to be found in a natural setting in Europe. The 8 acres (3.2 ha) of gardens with two lakes planted with naturalized water lilies were bequeathed to Pocklington by Major Percy Marlborough Stewart.The lakes, originally created for fishing, are stocked with ornamental roach and carp that visitors can hand feed.
