Hillfields, Bristol

Cossham Memorial Hospital is a community hospital, founded in 1907, in Hillfields, Bristol, near Kingswood, South Gloucestershire, England.

Staple Hill railway station was on the Midland Railway line between Bristol and Gloucester on the outskirts of Bristol. The station was on the Bristol and Gloucester Railway line, but opened in 1888, 44 years after the line had been opened through the site. It served the Victorian suburban developments in the area to the south of Mangotsfield. Staple Hill was served by stopping trains between Bristol and Gloucester and also by trains between Bristol and Bath that used the Mangotsfield and Bath Branch Line. Set in a cutting and with a tunnel at the east end of the station, it had difficult access and was approach by zigzag paths down the cutting embankment. The station buildings were in Gloucestershire, but the platforms extended inside the Bristol city boundary. No goods facilities were ever provided at Staple Hill, but the station was well-used by commuters to Bristol and north to the factories at Mangotsfield. Services between Bristol and Gloucester were withdrawn on 4 January 1965 and between Bristol and Bath on 7 March 1966, when the station closed. The line through the station was due to close on 3 January 1970, with services between Bristol and Gloucester diverted to the former Great Western Railway route via Filton Junction, but a landslip at Staple Hill a week before closure meant the diversion came into effect early. The route is now part of a cycle path and one of the platforms is still visible.

Lodge Hill is a hill and residential area of Bristol, England. It is in the electoral ward of Hillfields, Bristol, separating the large outer urban areas of Fishponds and Kingswood. Cossham Memorial Hospital is at its peak which is the highest point in urban Bristol at 369 ft (112 m). It has a population of 1,722 (est).

Mayfield Park is a residential area in East Bristol, with a large adjoining park known as the Ridgeway Rd Playing Fields.The area is located on the outskirts of the outer urban area of Fishponds and consists mainly of four roads: Mayfield Park, Mayfield Park North, Mayfield Park South and Mayfield Avenue. It is also near the main road of Berkeley Road and the outer urban area with the name of Speedwell, and adjacent to Chester Park. The area has a population of 1,730 (est).

Fishponds is a large suburb in the north-east of the English city of Bristol, about 3 miles (5 km) from the city centre. It has two large Victorian-era parks: Eastville Park and Vassall's Park (once the Vassall Family estate, also known as Oldbury Court). The River Frome runs through both with the Frome Valley Walkway alongside it. A restored mill found at Snuff Mills near the Vassall's Park end of the river has kept its original waterwheel, which can still be seen and heard turning. Eastville Park has a large boating lake with central wildlife reserves. Fishponds is mainly residential. Two main bus routes pass through. Housing is typically terraced Victorian. The high street shops include an international supermarket, Asian food store, charity shops, takeaways and Lidl, Aldi and Morrisons supermarkets. It has a small student population from the presence of the Glenside campus of the University of the West of England. The name Fishponds derives from when it was a quarry district, like nearby Soundwell. The empty quarries became large fishponds, which have since been filled in. One remained until the mid-1970s, when it was officially closed: a popular swimming area named "The Lido" by locals. It now belongs to an angling club.

Speedwell is an area of east Bristol, Part of the Hillfields ward. It has a mixture of residential and industrial land. The 2014 population estimate of the population of Speedwell was 2,342.The one School in the area is Bristol Brunel Academy, previously known as Speedwell Technology College and Speedwell Secondary School. It was Bristol's first specialist school - a technology college since 1997. In 2007 the Academy moved into all-new purpose built buildings and the old school buildings were demolished.

Fishponds railway station was a station in Fishponds, Bristol, England, a victim of Dr Beeching's cuts in the 1960s. Fishponds station was just south of where Morrisons supermarket car park is today. The railway line was built in 1835 for transport of coal from Coalpit Heath to industry in the centre of Bristol. The station, originally named Fish Ponds, was opened in March 1866, and was renamed Stapleton on 1 April 1866. It was part of the Bristol to Birmingham line of the Midland Railway. The station was renamed Fish Ponds on 1 January 1867, and Fishponds on 1 May 1939. It had two platforms plus a shunting line constructed in 1905 for the Avonside Locomotive Works to move their newly built locomotives onto the main line.

Bristol Brunel Academy is a mixed sex Secondary Academy, located in Speedwell in the ward of Hillfields, Bristol, England. The academy is named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The Academy is part of the Cabot Learning Federation which is sponsored by the University of the West of England and Rolls-Royce.

Two Mile Hill is a small district and parish on the eastern edge of the City of Bristol, just to the west of Kingswood which itself is in South Gloucestershire. Two Mile Hill Primary School is located in the area.

Soundwell, Bristol is a suburb of Bristol, England in the South Gloucestershire District. It is situated between Kingswood and Staple Hill. Located centrally in the parish is St. Stephen's Anglican Church and St. Stephen's CofE junior school with approximately 300 pupils. The original St. Stephen's infants school was closed and demolished several years ago to allow for expansion of Soundwell College. Soundwell College was a college of further education, now merged with the City of Bristol College, which maintains a centre in the locality.Soundwell was the home of Soundwell F.C. in the 1940s and 1950s. The current team, Soundwell Victoria, plays in the Bristol and District League. The team play home games at the Star Ground behind Kingswood Leisure Centre, formerly known as Soundwell Swimming Baths before it was developed. The Star Ground was named after the Pub next to the Leisure Centre, although the pub has since been renamed "The Turnpike". Soundwell and surrounding areas were also coal-mining communities in days gone past and also were well known for shoe and boot manufacturing. The name appears to be derived from Old English sund, meaning "healthy". There was once a healing well in the vicinity.

Lodge Causeway is an ancient passage through the former Royal Forest of Kingswood and now the main road between Fishponds and Kingswood in Bristol, England. The road is designated the B4048. The Causeway led to Kingswood Lodge at the top of Lodge Hill, recorded in use since Saxon times when kings used the forest for hunting whilst resident at the palace at Pucklechurch, where King Edmund was murdered by an outlaw in 946. It passes through the Fishponds suburbs of Hillfields, Mayfield Park and Chester Park.
