Asselby is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is located in the south-west of the county, north of the River Ouse. It is situated approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) west of the market town of Howden. The land surrounding Asselby is very flat and intersected by dykes which drain into the Rivers Derwent and Ouse.

Barn Hill Meadows is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is located close to the town of Howden. The site, which was designated a SSSI in 1987, lies on the flood plain of the Old Derwent river. The site is important for its herb-rich, unimproved, neutral grassland. Several of the fields have been traditionally managed for hay and some retain remnant ridge and furrow features. The dominant grasses are red fescue and sweet vernal-grass. There is also an abundance of great burnet, pepper saxifrage and meadow cranes bill.

Wressle railway station is a railway station on the Selby Line that serves the village of Wressle in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated 25 miles (40 km) west of Hull Paragon.

Wressle (with spelling variations of Wressell, and Wressel, in Leland's Itinerary as Wreshil, in the Domesday Book as Weresa) is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, lying on the eastern bank of the River Derwent approximately 3 miles (5 km) north-west of Howden. Wressle village has a late 18th-century church, St John, and on the western fringe of the village is the Grade I listed structure and scheduled monument, the ruins of Wressle Castle. Wressle railway station is located within the village. The parish includes the hamlets of Brind, Newsholme and Loftshome. Wressle lies within the Parliamentary constituency of Haltemprice and Howden an area that mainly consists of middle class suburbs, towns and villages. The area is affluent, placed as the 10th most affluent in the country in a Barclays Private Clients survey, and has one of the highest proportions of owner-occupiers in the country.

Wressle Castle is a ruined palace-fortress in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, built for Thomas Percy in the 1390s. It is privately owned and it is usually open to the public for a few days each year. Wressle Castle originally consisted of four ranges built around a central courtyard; there was a tower at each corner, and the structure was entered through a gatehouse in the east wall, facing the village. After Thomas Percy was executed for rebelling against Henry IV, Wressle Castle was confiscated by the Crown. With occasional periods when it was granted to other people, the castle was mostly under royal control until 1471 when it was returned to the Percy family. Henry Percy, 5th Earl of Northumberland, refurbished the castle and gardens, bringing them to the standard of royal properties. The castle was embedded within an ornamental landscape, with two gardens laid out at the same time as the castle was founded and a third created later. Wressle was intended as a high-status residence rather than a fortress and was never besieged. However, it was held by Parliament during the English Civil War and partly demolished in 1646–50, leaving the south range still standing. Nearly 150 years later, it was further damaged by a fire that struck the house. In the 21st century, Historic England, Natural England and the Country Houses Foundation funded repairs to the castle ruins.

Knedlington is a small hamlet and former civil parish, now in the parish of Asselby, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the market town of Howden and lies to the west of the B1228 road. The M62 motorway is just over 1 mile to the south-east. Village landmarks include Knedlington Manor, Knedlington Hall, and woodland. Knedlington Hall was protected as a Grade II* listed building in 1966. In 1931 the parish had a population of 86.In 1823 Knedlington was in the civil parish of Howden and the Wapentake Liberty of Howdenshire. Recorded was the hall built in the reign of Elizabeth I at the west of the village. Population at the time was 118. Occupations included a farmer and a horse dealer, and the landlord of the Anchor public house. Resident was a gentleman and two yeoman, one of whom was the chief constable and agent to a London insurance company.Knedlington was formerly a township in the parish of Howden, from 1866 Knedlington was a civil parish in its own right, on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Asselby, Howden, Eastrington and Kilpin.

The River Aire is a major river in Yorkshire, England, 92 miles (148 km) in length. Part of the river below Leeds is canalised, and is known as the Aire and Calder Navigation. The Handbook for Leeds and Airedale (1890) notes that the distance from Malham to Howden is 58 miles (93 km) direct, but the river's meanderings extend that to 90 miles (140 km). Between Malham Tarn and Airmyn, the river drops 1,300 feet (400 m).

The Howden rail accident in Yorkshire on 7 August 1840 killed five passengers. It occurred when a large piece of cargo, cast iron, fell from a wagon and derailed the following carriages. It happened on the Hull and Selby Railway as the train was travelling from Leeds to Hull. The crash was one of the first railway accidents to be investigated by the Railway Inspectorate. One of the worst accidents to have occurred on the new UK rail network, it was also a new phenomenon for the public; shipwrecks and coal mining accidents were more frequent.

Barmby railway station was a station on the Hull and Barnsley Railway, and served the village of Barmby on the Marsh in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England.

Boothferry was a constituency in Humberside which returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It was created for the 1983 general election, and abolished for the 1997 general election.

Boothferry is a village in the East Riding of Yorkshire in England. It is situated on the north bank of the River Ouse where the A614 road crosses the river. It is about 2 miles (3 km) north-west of Goole. Boothferry is split between civil parishes; areas to the west of the B1228 road are in the civil parish of Asselby, and those to the east are in Howden. Boothferry is home to Boothferry Bridge which, built in 1929, was for many years the first physical road crossing of the Ouse (if travelling inland), although a lower rail crossing was built at Goole in 1869. Boothferry Bridge was very heavily used by vehicles travelling between the north and south banks of the Humber before the opening of the M62 motorway in the mid-1970s and the Humber Bridge in 1981. Boothferry Bridge is celebrated in the song "Boothferry Bridge" written by Harvey Andrews and released in 1972 on his album 'Writer of Songs"' and by the musical group "The Lonesome Travellers", which was released in the early 1970s. The M62 now crosses the Ouse on a viaduct approximately one mile downstream (east) of the old bridge. Boothferry gave its name to the Boothferry borough of Humberside from 1974 to 1996, and to the Boothferry parliamentary constituency which, in 1997, was largely amalgamated into the Haltemprice and Howden constituency represented by David Davis MP. Boothferry was also chosen to be the name taken by a local resident when he took the title of lord in 2004. Boothferry has also lent its name to many roads and buildings along with businesses within the borough, although it is now defunct. Hull City Football Club played from 1946 to 2002 at a football stadium named Boothferry Park, which also took its name from a road (the A63 – Boothferry Road) that leads from Hull to the village.
