Waterman is a village in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,433 at the 2020 census.The village is known for the DeKalb Ag seed corn processing plant, now owned by the German company, Bayer. The "Waterman and Western" train line that operates in Lion's Club Park is a 1/3 scale train line with a 1/2 mile train line circling the park and is a hobby of a local resident.

Shabbona Lake is a man-made lake created in 1975 by damming the (Big) Indian Creek, a tributary of the Fox River. Its name derives from the Potawatomi leader Shabbona. Seventy miles west of Chicago, off U.S. 30, urban landscape gives way to 1,550 acres (630 ha) of rolling prairie and a 318.8 acres (129.0 ha) man-made fishing lake. Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area provides a convenient, natural haven from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The Shabbona Hotel is a historic hotel building at 104 West Comanche Street in Shabbona, Illinois. Built in 1897 by L. C. Card, the hotel was the second in Shabbona; the first, the Shabbona House, opened in 1874 and burned down in 1894. The two-story vernacular brick building had ten rooms in addition to two apartments, a living space for its owners, and a restaurant in its basement. It provided lodging to both out-of-town visitors and the many workers on Shabbona's two railroad lines, one of which was adjacent to the hotel. The hotel also served as a meeting place for Shabbona residents, and visiting optometrists provided eye exams and services from the hotel. In the 1930s, the hotel was converted to apartments.The hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 6, 2021.

Elva is an unincorporated community in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States, located 5 miles (8.0 km) south-southwest of DeKalb. Elva was developed by Joseph Glidden of DeKalb, and was named after his daughter. An 1892 map of Illinois shows the village with the famous grain elevator and train station just south of the main east west road through town. A 1910 Illinois map identifies the town as Elva Station, as a spur line connected up to DeKalb.

Franks is an unincorporated community in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States, located 5.5 miles (8.9 km) northwest of Sandwich. Originally, Franks was the village of Somonauk. Founded in 1834, it was situated on Chicago Rd, a mail route that ran from Chicago to the far West. There were dozens of small cabins along Somonauk Creek; wmong them was an Underground Railroad stop. Many of the people of Somonauk died due to lack of food and poverty. Recently, an original house from the Somonauk settlement caught fire. In the mid-1840s, the double-track CB&Q mainline was built from Chicago to Galesburg, prompting the whole village to relocate to the present-day village of Somonauk.
