The DeKalb County portion of Somonauk is part of the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the small portion that lies in LaSalle County is part of the Ottawa, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Sandwich City Hall, which is also known as the Sandwich City Hall & Opera House, is the government center for the city of Sandwich, Illinois, in DeKalb County. The first floor of the building is occupied by city government while the second floor of the historic building houses an active opera house. Sandwich City Hall & Opera House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been since 1979.

The von KleinSmid Mansion was built for the von KleinSmid family of the DeKalb County city of Sandwich, Illinois in the mid-nineteenth century. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The building is located on Sandwich's West Center Street, and is under private ownership.It was the childhood home of Rufus B. von KleinSmid, former President and Chancellor of the University of Southern California, and a passionate supporter of eugenics.

Lake Holiday is a census-designated place located on Lake Holiday in Northville Township, LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. Its population was 5,687 as of the 2020 census. The homes on the western banks of the lake are served by the Somonauk Fire Department/EMS and the Somonauk School District, while the eastern banks of the lake are covered by Sandwich municipal services (Fire/EMS, CUSD 430). However, due to the community's location south of the LaSalle-DeKalb county line, neither Sandwich Police nor Somonauk Police have any jurisdiction. Instead, the area is patrolled by local security, which has limited authority. For serious matters, the community is covered by the LaSalle County Sheriff's Department, which has a substation in the Northville Township Building, a few miles to the south of Lake Holiday.The Lake Holiday CDP includes the neighborhoods surrounding Lake Holiday as well as neighboring Wildwood, which sits to the east of County Highway 3. Lake Holiday was created in the mid-1960s as a lake resort community, with its property owners association being incorporated on July 2, 1965. Wildwood was created around the same time, as a modular home community just across the highway. Starting in the early 1990s, an annex to Wildwood known as "Wildwood South" or "New Wildwood" was created, with completion around 2002. Both subdivisions share a gas station and a small retail area, with a restaurant having been built in 2006-2007 farther north, just south of the county line. Lake Holiday was created by damming up Somonauk Creek in 1965, on its path south toward its confluence with the Fox River just north of Sheridan.

Sandwich Community High School is a public four-year secondary education school located in Sandwich, Illinois, about 60 miles from Chicago. The high school is part of Sandwich Community Unit School District 430. The school is a member of the Interstate Eight Conference, and the school participates in Baseball, Softball, Volleyball, Cross Country, Soccer, Golf, Boys/Girls Basketball, Wrestling, Boys/Girls Track & Field, Fishing, Swimming and Diving, Doing It, Scholastic Bowl, and all music-related competitions. The high school is currently a class 4A school in Football, while competing as class A or B in other events due to its enrollment size.

Little Rock is an unincorporated community in Little Rock Township, Kendall County, Illinois. It is located in the far northwestern corner of the county. Big Rock lies to the northeast, Hinckley lies to the northwest, Plano lies to the southeast, and Sandwich lies to the southwest of the village. The community originated as a stagecoach stop along Galena Road (also known as Chicago Road to the west of Little Rock). The community is named for Little Rock Creek, which flows on the community's western side.
