Jaca

The Diocese of Jaca is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in the northeastern Spanish province of Huesca, part of the autonomous community of Aragón. The diocese is a suffragan in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Pamplona y Tudela.The territory of the Diocese of Jaca was originally administered by the Diocese of Huesca, but after the Moorish conquest of Huesca in 713 its bishops, (known as the itinerant "Bishops of Aragon"), moved to Aragon. The episcopal see was established in Jaca during 1063–96, then moved back to Huesca after king Pedro I of Aragon retook the city from the Moors in November 1096. The Diocese of Jaca was created in 1572, carved out of the diocese of Huesca. Jaca cathedral is dedicated to [Saint Peter]. Consecrated in the late 11th century and altered in the 15th–18th centuries, it is Romanesque in its architectural style. The church of San Adrián de Sasabe, in Sasabe (also in Huesca province) was an earlier diocesan cathedral. A religious and civil festival is held on the first Friday of May, locally referred to as "Primer Viernes de Mayo", in memory of a victory said to have been won over the Moors in the 8th century by Count Aznar aided by the women of Jaca. It is celebrated with a solemn procession in which the entire cathedral chapter takes part. There are many hermitages around Jaca, but none more interesting than that of San Juan de la Peña, ensconced within a cave in the Pyrenees. This shrine was also a monastery, royal mausoleum and -allegedly- one of the many hiding places of the Holy Grail in the middle ages. It continues to be a stop along the Camino de Santiago for many pilgrims and tourists. In another cave, dedicated to La Virgen de la Cueva, locals gather annually to pay homage to "Our Lade of the Cave", a venerated shrine where Garcí Ximénez was proclaimed first King of Sobrarbe in the 8th century.

The Cathedral of St Peter the Apostle (Spanish: Catedral de San Pedro Apóstol) is a Roman Catholic church located in Jaca, in Aragon, Spain. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jaca. It is the first Romanesque cathedral built in Aragon (1070s – early 12th century) and one of the oldest in the Iberian peninsula. Its current appearance is the result of later additions and modifications introduced especially in the early modern period (from the late 15th to late 18th century). The cathedral was erected on command of King Sancho Ramírez, who, after renovating in Rome his vassal oath to the Pope Alexander II (1068), had obtained from the latter the right to establish the episcopal seat in Jaca, then capital of the Kingdom of Aragon.

The Jaca uprising (Spanish: Sublevación de Jaca) was a military revolt on 12–13 December 1930 in Jaca, Huesca, Spain, with the purpose of overthrowing the monarchy of Spain. The revolt was launched prematurely, was poorly organized and was quickly suppressed. Its leaders were executed or imprisoned. However, the revolt sparked political upheavals that led to declaration of the Second Spanish Republic a few months later.

Bergosa is an unpopulated settlement belonging to the municipality of Jaca, in the region of Jacetania, province of Huesca, Aragon. It is part of the Garcipollera.

La Jacetania (Aragonese: A Chacetania; French: Jacétanie) is a comarca in northern Aragon, Spain. It is located in the northwestern corner of the Huesca and Zaragoza provinces. The administrative capital is Jaca, with 13,374 inhabitants the largest town of the comarca. The area is famous for its ski resorts. Jacetania borders with France in the north and with Navarre in the west. Most of its territory is mountainous, with the ranges of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees covering most of its area. The name of the comarca originates in the ancient Iberian tribe of the Iacetani (Latin: Iaccetani). This comarca was the birthplace of the historic County of Aragon.

Castiello de Jaca (in Aragonese: Castiello de Chaca) is a municipality located in the province of Huesca, Aragon, Spain. According to the 2004 census (INE), the municipality has a population of 198 inhabitants. It is serviced by the Jaca-Astun bus. There are 2 restaurants/bars. Recent developments have seen the size of the town increase greatly.

Yosa de Garcipollera is an abandoned town belonging to the municipality of Jaca, in the province of Huesca, in Spain. It is part of the Garcipollera Valley, in the region of Jacetania, in the autonomous community of Aragon.

Bescós de Garcipollera or Bescós de la Garcipollera is a Spanish settlement belonging to the municipality of Jaca, in the Jacetania, province of Huesca, Aragon. It is located in the valley of the Garcipollera.

Villanovilla (in Aragonese Villanoviella) is a Spanish settlement belonging to the municipality of Jaca, in the Jacetania, province of Huesca, Aragon.

La Garcipollera (in Aragonese and officially A Garzipollera), also known as Garcipollera Valley, is a small area of the Aragonese Pyrenees, within the Jacetania, in the province of Huesca, practically coinciding with the basin of the Ijuez river, a tributary of Aragon. It is characteristic because most of its villages were depopulated during the 20th century.

Aratorés is a small village located in the municipality of Castiello de Jaca in the Huesca province of Aragón, Spain. According to the 2012 census (INE), the village has a population of 40 inhabitants. Aratorés is located at an altitude of 1,021 metres (3,350 ft) and it is at the top of a hill that dominates the Aragón valley.

Cenarbe is an abandoned agricultural and livestock village. The locality belongs to the Spanish municipality of Villanúa (Huesca, Aragón). It was located at 1200 meters above sea level. Toponymic with origin in the old Basque Azenari-be, soil of foxes, the suffix -be (soil, lower part) would refer to the situation of the village in a small plain at the foot of Mount Vacún 2,114 meters high.
