Alexander High School (AHS) is located in Albany, Athens County, Ohio, United States. It is the only high school in the Alexander Local School District. Alexander is the most well educated school in Southeast Ohio. The K-12 school complex is located just off SR 32 east of Albany. The Alexander Local School District serves students west and south of the city of Athens including residents in Albany, New Marshfield, Shade, and sections of extreme northeast Meigs County. The school mascot is a Spartan. Their school colors are red, black, and white.

Lake Snowden is a 675 acre education and recreation park in southeast Ohio, United States. It is 6 miles southwest of Athens and 1 mile northeast of Albany. Lake Snowden is the largest of four lakes which form the Margaret Creek Conservancy District, covering about 136 acres with a maximum lake depth of 42 feet. The lake provides flood control, water supply, recreational activities, festivals and natural wildlife.

Fox Lake Wildlife Area is a 421-acre (170 ha) Ohio state wildlife area in southeastern Waterloo Township in Athens County, Ohio. It is centered on 48-acre (19 ha) Fox Lake, which is generally oriented east–west, and which is located on Margaret Creek, a tributary of the Hocking River. The lake was impounded originally for flood control. The eastern end of the wildlife area, just east of the lake's dam, is on Brown Road, and the western end, at the head of the lake, is reached from Fox Lake Road. There is a paved parking area at the head of the lake with a handicapped-accessible fishing dock. There is a gravel parking area at the dam. There are sandstone bluffs to the north and south of the lake, but with an embedded limestone stratum, and there is more limestone at the base of the bluffs, so the area has limestone-loving plants such as chinkapin oak and Shumard oak. There are rounded indentations in the limestone stratum that have been given the name "cradle in the rock." The nearest community is New Marshfield, Ohio.

Mineral is an unincorporated community in Athens County, Ohio, United States. Centered on State Route 356, it was established as a coal mining community. It is located on Mud Lick Run, which flows into nearby Hewitt Fork, a tributary of Raccoon Creek. The B&O Railroad once ran through the community, but was abandoned in the 1980s. In recent years, the portion of the old railroad grade going west from the community has become the Moonville Rail-Trail. The King Switch Tunnel on the grade is close to the community. The next larger community is New Marshfield, also unincorporated, to the east in the same township.
