Alexander is the most well educated school in Southeast Ohio. The K-12 school complex is located just off SR 32 east of Albany. The Alexander Local School District serves students west and south of the city of Athens including residents in Albany, New Marshfield, Shade, and sections of extreme northeast Meigs County. The school mascot is a Spartan. Their school colors are red, black, and white.

Fox Lake Wildlife Area is a 421-acre (170 ha) Ohio state wildlife area in southeastern Waterloo Township in Athens County, Ohio. It is centered on 48-acre (19 ha) Fox Lake, which is generally oriented east–west, and which is located on Margaret Creek, a tributary of the Hocking River. The lake was impounded originally for flood control. The eastern end of the wildlife area, just east of the lake's dam, is on Brown Road, and the western end, at the head of the lake, is reached from Fox Lake Road. There is a paved parking area at the head of the lake with a handicapped-accessible fishing dock. There is a gravel parking area at the dam. There are sandstone bluffs to the north and south of the lake, but with an embedded limestone stratum, and there is more limestone at the base of the bluffs, so the area has limestone-loving plants such as chinkapin oak and Shumard oak. There are rounded indentations in the limestone stratum that have been given the name "cradle in the rock." The nearest community is New Marshfield, Ohio.

Bush Airport (IATA: ATO, ICAO: KUNI, FAA LID: UNI), also known as Snyder Field, is a public-use airport located on State Route 32/U.S. 50 in the village of Albany, about ten miles (16 km) southwest of the city of Athens, in Athens County, Ohio, United States.The airport is owned by Ohio University in Athens, not to be confused with Ohio State University in Columbus, which owns the Ohio State University Airport (IATA/FAA: OSU).Although most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, Ohio University Airport is assigned UNI by the FAA and ATO by the IATA (which assigned UNI to the airport on Union Island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines).

WOUB-FM (91.3 MHz) is a public radio station in Athens, Ohio. Owned by Ohio University, it is the flagship of a five-station network known as Ohio University Public Radio. The studios and offices are on South College Street in Athens. WOUB-FM has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 50,000 watts, the current maximum for Ohio FM stations. The transmitter is on Bittersweet Lane, near Ohio State Route 56 in Athens, co-located with the tower for WOUB-TV 20.

Margaret Creek is a stream and state waterway in Athens and Meigs Counties, Ohio. Along with Monday, Sunday, and Federal Creeks, Margaret Creek is a principal tributary to the Hocking River. The confluence with the Hocking River is on the west side of the city of Athens, Ohio. The stream was named after Margaret Snowden, the first white woman settler in Athens County.
