Iowa Wesleyan University

Old Main is an historic building located on the Iowa Wesleyan University campus in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, United States. Built in 1854, when James Harlan was the college's president, it is the second building constructed on the campus after Pioneer Hall. It is believed that Old Main was the first genuine collegiate building built in Iowa. The bricks for the building were manufactured locally by Benjamin Franklin Pearson of Keosauqua, Iowa, who also was responsible for some of the building's construction. The three-story building has modified classical features. It was designed to have classrooms on the first two floors and the library, natural history museum and chapel on the third floor. The building is capped with a hip roof with bracketed eaves, and a wooden cupola with a low dome painted gold. The International P.E.O. Sisterhood was founded in the building. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Mount Pleasant station is an Amtrak intercity train station in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, United States. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad built the pressed brick depot in 1912. The contractors were Whitney & Bergdahl (J. Louis Whitney and K.A. Bergdahl), who were prominent Mt. Pleasant builders at that time. Using funds received under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Amtrak installed a new wheelchair lift and enclosure at the station in 2010.The Mount Pleasant station has a waiting area and lobby open to the public 365 days a year. The ticket office is staffed for ticket sales and baggage service Monday-Friday excluding holidays or when the agent is out sick or on vacation. Checked baggage service is available at the ticket counter Monday-Friday and trainside with the conductor on weekends.

The Harlan–Lincoln House is an historic structure located on the Iowa Wesleyan College campus in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, United States. It is now a museum that houses memorabilia from the families of Senator James Harlan and President Abraham Lincoln, who are associated with the house.

The Henry Ambler House is a historic house located at 405 Broadway in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

The Dr. J.O. and Catherine Ball House is a historic building located in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, United States. In 1892 this was one of three houses designed by George F. Barber's mail-order architectural firm that was being built in town, and it was the most elaborate of the three. The house is an enlargement of Barber's more expensive plans for design no. 33 from his 1891 book. The 2½-story frame Queen Anne features an irregular plan, a brick-faced limestone foundation, and an octagonal tower with an ogee shaped roof. The circular window on the second story projection is framed with three balconies, one above and one on either side. The wrap-around porch has a projecting gable roof supported by turned columns. A two-story bay window is located on the east elevation. It was also the first house in Mount Pleasant that was totally reliant on electricity for lighting. It was built for Dr. J.O. Ball, a dentist, who was active in civic improvements in Mount Pleasant. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

The G. W. S. Allen House is a historic house located at 207 East Henry Street in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

The Former Mount Pleasant Public Library is a historic building located in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, United States. The library here was established in 1875. The community applied to Andrew Carnegie for a grant to build a new building, which was accepted on January 13, 1903. They were initially granted $10,000 and then were given a further $2,500. The Chicago architectural firm Patton & Miller designed the Romanesque Revival structure. They adapted Henry Hobson Richardson's Thomas Crane Public Library (1882) for this building. Unlike the Crane Library, this building is primarily brick with rough stone used for a short tower on the main facade and for the trim. It also features an asymmetrical grouping of intersecting gables. The building opened on Wednesday, February 22, 1905. An addition was built onto the rear of the building in 1926. It was designed by the Des Moines architectural firm of Dougher, Rich & Woodburn. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The library has subsequently moved to another facility and this building now houses a branch of Southeastern Community College.

The Harlan House Hotel is a historic building located in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, United States. It is associated with James Harlan, the first Republican to represent Iowa in the United States Senate (1855-1865, 1867–1872). He was also Secretary of the Interior (1865-1867). His daughter Mary was the wife of Robert Todd Lincoln, President Abraham Lincoln's only surviving son. Harlan built the oldest part of this building as his house in 1857. After his career as a Senator, he could no longer afford the house and bought another house in Mount Pleasant. Harlan built the first addition onto his old house and converted it into a hotel so he could support himself. He added onto the hotel two more times, c. 1880 and 1892. The first two additions are on the alley side of the building, and the third addition faces Jefferson Street. The middle section of the building with the bracketed cornice and mansard roof is the original house. Harlan moved into the hotel in the early 1890s and died here in 1899. A few minor alterations were made to the building in the 20th century. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

The Masonic Temple Theater (subsequently the Temple Twin Theaters, and in 2013 the Main Street Cinemas) is a historic building located in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, United States. Built in 1923, it combined both commercial and fraternal functions in one building. The theater company paid for the construction of the lower level, and the Masons paid for the upper level. The Masons continued to occupy the space until 1989 when they moved to another facility. The building was designed in the Neoclassical style by Owen, Payson & Carswell, and K.A. Bergdahl was the contractor who built it. Neoclassical features include the balustrade, the medallion with the Masonic insignia, volutes above the windows, the parapet roof, and the ornamental frieze and cornice. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

The Budde–Singer Building is a historic building located in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, United States. This three story, brick Italianate structure was built in 1882. It replaced a similar building that had been built in 1856 and destroyed in a fire. Its early Italianate style is unusual for this time period, but it fits into its streetscape with similarly designed buildings, including the neighboring Brazelton House Hotel. The Budde–Singer Building features round arched windows with brick patterned hoodmolds on the second and third floors, and a bracketed wooden cornice. The first floor storefront has been somewhat altered, and the exterior of the building has been painted since about 1909. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Mount Pleasant is a city in and the county seat of Henry County, Iowa. The population was 9,274 in the 2020 census, an increase from 8,668 in the 2010 census. It was founded in 1835 by pioneer Presley Saunders.
