West Grinstead

St George's Church is an Anglican church in West Grinstead, West Sussex, England. It is in the Diocese of Chichester, occupying a rural position in the Sussex Weald by the River Adur. The oldest extant part of church dates from the early 11th century with additions in the 12th and 13th centuries. A south chapel was added in the 14th century. The church contains a number of brasses and monuments that are of national importance and retains a number of features from its pre-reformation history. The chancel has some stained glass dating to the 14th century. It is the Parish church of West Grinstead with the mission shared with St. Michael and All Angels in Partridge Green. St George's is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a Grade I listed building.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation or Church of Our Lady of Consolation and Saint Francis is a Roman Catholic parish church in West Grinstead, in West Sussex. It was built from 1875 to 1876, with additions made to the church in 1896 and 1964. The church was designed by John A. Crawley and the 1896 additions was designed by Frederick Walters. It is situated on the corner of Steyning Road and Park Lane to the east of the A24 road. It is a Gothic Revival style church and a Grade II listed building.The shrine is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the venerated title and enshrined image of Our Lady of Consolation, which merited a Pontifical decree of coronation from Pope Leo XIII on 12 July 1893.

The medieval Knepp Castle (sometimes referred to as 'Old Knepp Castle', to distinguish it from the nearby 19th-century mansion) is to the west of the village of West Grinstead, West Sussex, England near the River Adur and the A24 (grid reference TQ163209). The castle was probably founded by the Braose family in the 12th century. King John confiscated the castle along with the Braose lands in 1208. Knepp was used as a hunting lodge, and John visited the castle several times. He ordered its destruction in both 1215 and 1216 during the First Baron's War. Knepp Castle continued to be used into the 14th century and hosted reigning monarchs on several occasions. The castle eventually fell out of use and by the early 18th century was mostly destroyed. Later that century, stone from the castle was used to build a nearby road. The name is thought to come from the Old English word "cnæp", referring to the mound on which it stands. The land around the castle is now the site of Knepp Wildland.

Knepp Wildland is the first major lowland rewilding project in England. It comprises 1,400 hectares (3,500 acres; 5.4 square miles) of former arable and dairy farmland in the grounds of Knepp Castle, in West Sussex, England. Since 2000 when the conversion from intensive agriculture started the land now supports an 'extraordinary abundance' of many rare species including turtle doves, barbastelle bats, slow-worms and grass snakes; it has become a major nesting site for nightingales; a breeding hotspot for purple emperor butterflies; the site of the first white stork chicks raised in the wild in England for 600 years, and is home to the first beavers living in the wild in Sussex for 400 years. On 17 November 2021, the very rare Vagrant Emperor dragonfly (Anax ephippiger) was discovered in one field.

West Grinstead was a railway station on the Steyning Line which served the village of West Grinstead. It had a goods yard with a cattle loading bay and facilities for handling horse boxes. With the hunt kennels and national stud based in the area, the station saw substantial horse traffic.The station closed as a result of the Beeching Axe in 1966 and now forms part of the Downs Link footpath. The main station building and station worker's cottages, although now privately owned, remain, as do the station platforms. The local parish council have erected a replica station sign in the vicinity, and an old railway signal has also been installed. A British Railways Mark 1 coach has also been placed on rails in the former goods yard.

Dial Post is a village in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England. The civil parish, where the lowest level political meetings are held, is West Grinstead in the north-east - its biggest settlement is 2 miles (3.2 km) east at Partridge Green. It has a population of around 100 based on the average headcount per inhabited dwelling. In 2001 the population of the civil parish as a whole was 2,934

St Michael and All Angels Church is a late nineteenth-century church in the settlement of Partridge Green in the parish of West Grinstead in West Sussex. It was built to cater for the then growing population of the village. Ian Nairn, in the Sussex volume of The Buildings of England, approves of the simplicity of this "flint village church" and comments that most "other counties would have had it much fussier". St Michael and All Angels' shares its mission with the parish church of St George's Church, West Grinstead.

Partridge Green is a village in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England. It lies on the B2135 road 2.5 miles (4 km) north-west of Henfield. It is in the parish of West Grinstead. Partridge Green takes its name from a family called Partrych who were registered in the area in 1332. The name Partrych comes from the medieval word Petriche, the word for a snarer of partridges. Jolesfield was the original medieval settlement and it was only in 1861 that the village started to develop with the arrival of the Horsham to Shoreham railway line (see Steyning Line and Partridge Green railway station). St Michael and All Angels Church was built in the 1890 to keep up with the increase in population. The settlement in what today is Partridge Green originated around the road junction of the B2135 and B2116 with several houses (in 1840 there were around six houses) and an inn called the Hare and Hounds, which was one of the meeting places for the West Grinstead Hundred court between 1786 and 1802. With the arrival of the railway, the inn was replaced with a new building called the Station Inn (later Station Hotel). After the closure of the railway in 1966 it was renamed The Partridge and in 2011 it was taken over by the Dark Star Brewery, also based in the village. It is now a Free House and is no longer the Dark Star Brewery Tap, although it still sells Dark Star beers. While being small, the village has several businesses a pub, several shops, a fish and chip shop and a veterinary surgery. In addition Downs Link, a bridleway popular with cyclists and walkers, runs along the side of the village.West Sussex County Council Fire and Rescue Service also has a small station in the village.

Littleworth is a hamlet in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England. It lies on the Partridge Green to Maplehurst road 2.9 miles (4.7 km) north of Henfield.

Partridge Green was a railway station on the Steyning Line which served the village of Partridge Green. The station closed as a result of the Beeching Axe in 1966 and now forms part of the Downs Link footpath. The station buildings have been obliterated by housing and the Star Road Industrial Estate.

Dark Star is a brewery in Partridge Green, Sussex, England.

Bines Green is a hamlet in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England. It lies 1.9 miles (3.1 km) north west of Henfield on the B2135 road between Ashurst and Partridge Green. The western River Adur flows through the hamlet. Bines Bridge, just north of Bines Green, marks the limit of tidal waters flowing up the western Adur. Bines Bridge is 17.9 km (11.1 mi) from the mouth of the Adur at Shoreham-by-Sea.
