Spaldington

Howden was a rural district in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England from 1894 to 1974.It was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 as a successor to the Howden rural sanitary district. It lost a few parishes to the newly created Derwent Rural District and parts to Beverley Rural District in 1935 by a County Review Order made under the Local Government Act 1929. At the same time it gained a small part from the abolition of Riccal Rural District.It survived until 1974 when it was abolished, becoming part of the Boothferry district of Humberside. Since 1996 it has formed part of the unitary authority of the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Gribthorpe is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) north-east of Selby and 5 miles (8 km) north of Howden. Gribthorpe forms part of the civil parish of Foggathorpe. In 1823, Gribthorpe (also known as Gripthorpe), was in the civil parish of Bubwith and the Wapentake of Harthill. Population at the time, including the nearby hamlet of Willitoft, was 145, with occupations including four farmers.

RNAS Howden (later RAF Howden) was an airship station near the town of Howden 15 miles (24 km) south-east of York, England.

Spalding Moor is a moor (in the sense of an area of low lying wetland) in the East Riding of Yorkshire in England. It lies between the River Derwent and the town of Market Weighton at the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds. It forms part of the Humberhead Levels, south and east of the Escrick glacial moraine at the southern edge of the Vale of York. The name is recorded in 1172 as Spaldinghemore. The name may refer to a river named Spalding, derived from the Old English spald "ditch or fenland river", which also gave its name to the village of Spaldington. The River Spalding is not recorded, but would be the river now known as the River Foulness. The name may also be derived from the tribe known as the Spalda mentioned in the 7th century Tribal Hidage, which gave rise to the tribe or district known as the Spaldingas, the "dwellers by the Spald". If that explanation is correct, Spald could refer to some other fenland river or rivers. The Spaldingas also gave their name to the town of Spalding in Lincolnshire.As the moor was drained and cultivated, the name fell out of general use, but lives on in the name of Holme-on-Spalding-Moor. The village of Thornton was sometimes distinguished by the suffix "in Spalding Moor". The name of Barmby Moor, until 1935 formally known as Barmby on the Moor, also refers to Spalding Moor.

North Howden is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of the town of Howden. It lies on the B1228 road where it crosses the Hull to York railway line. It forms part of the civil parish of Howden. Since 1840 Howden railway station on the Selby Line has been located here. The station and associated station master's house was designated a Grade II listed building in 1987. The signal box was also designated Grade II in 1989.

Howden railway station serves the market and minster town of Howden in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of the town in the hamlet of North Howden and is 22+1⁄4 miles (35.8 km) west of Hull Paragon. The station is managed by Northern, but is also served by TransPennine Express and Hull Trains.

Brind is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, forming part of the civil parish of Wressle. It is situated approximately 2 miles (3 km) to the north of the market town of Howden and lies west of the B1228 road. The single track tarmac road (Brind Lane) runs through the entire hamlet, and joins the Wressle road to the north. In 1823 Brind with Newsholme was in the parish of Wressle, the Wapentake of Harthill and the Liberty of Howdenshire. Population at the time was 177.

The Howden rail accident in Yorkshire on 7 August 1840 killed five passengers. It occurred when a large piece of cargo, cast iron, fell from a wagon and derailed the following carriages. It happened on the Hull and Selby Railway as the train was travelling from Leeds to Hull. The crash was one of the first railway accidents to be investigated by the Railway Inspectorate. One of the worst accidents to have occurred on the new UK rail network, it was also a new phenomenon for the public; shipwrecks and coal mining accidents were more frequent.

Portington is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 3 miles (5 km) east of Howden and lies 0.5 miles (0.8 km) east of the A614 road. It forms part of the civil parish of Eastrington. Portington lies within the Parliamentary constituency of Haltemprice and Howden an area that mainly consists of middle class suburbs, towns and villages. The area is affluent and has one of the highest proportions of owner-occupiers in the country.Portington Hall is a Grade II listed building.

Belby is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 4 miles (6 km) north-east of Goole town centre and 1.5 miles (2 km) north-east of Howden. It lies just to the south of the B1230 road and north of the M62 motorway. Belby forms part of the civil parish of Kilpin.

Harlthorpe is a hamlet and former civil parish, now in the parish of Foggathorpe, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) north-east of Selby town centre and 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Howden town centre. It lies on the A163 road. In 1931 the parish had a population of 53.In 1823 Harlthorpe (then Harlethorpe), was in the parish of Bubwith and the Wapentake of Harthill. Population at the time was 93, with occupations including six farmers, a blacksmith, and a shoemaker.Harlthorpe was formerly a township in the parish of Bubwith, from 1866 Harlthorpe was a civil parish in its own right, on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Foggathorpe.

Howden School is a coeducational secondary school located in Howden in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The school previously specialised in Technology and ICT. Pupils usually attend the school from Year Seven (aged 11) to Year Eleven (aged 16). The school sixth form department closed around 2010. Howden School was placed in "Special Measures" following an Ofsted inspection in July 2010. The inspectors said the school was failing to give its pupils an acceptable standard of education, and that those responsible for leading and managing the school were not demonstrating the capacity to secure necessary improvement. The head teacher, Andrew Williams, left and was temporarily replaced by Gary Garghan (Acting Head) and Dave McCready (Executive Head). On 24 September 2011 Howden School was judged to be Grade 3 (satisfactory), by Ofsted and declared to be out of Special Measures. After Garghan left the school, Mr G. Cannon replaced him as headmaster. In the most recent Ofsted inspection the school was rated Good with elements of Outstanding. Previously a community school administered by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, in September 2018 Howden School converted to academy status. The school is now sponsored by The Consortium Academy Trust.
