Gard

Alès (French: [alɛs] ) is a commune and subprefecture in the Gard department in the Occitania region in Southern France. Until 1926, it was officially known as Alais.

Alès station is a railway station serving the town Alès, Gard department, southern France. It lies on the railway line from Clermont-Ferrand to Nîmes. The station is served by regional trains to Clermont-Ferrand, Mende and Nîmes.

The canton of Alès-3 is an administrative division of the Gard department, southern France. It was created at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Alès.It consists of the following communes:

The arrondissement of Alès is an arrondissement of France in the Gard department in the Occitanie region. It has 97 communes. Its population is 148,139 (2016), and its area is 1,304.2 km2 (503.6 sq mi).

Alès Cathedral (French: Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste d'Alès) is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and located in the town of Alès in the department of Gard, France. It has been a monument historique since 9 May 1914.Alès was formerly a centre of the Huguenots and was taken only after a long siege by Louis XIII in 1627. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Alès was established here in 1694, at which time the construction of the cathedral began, but was not restored after the French Revolution: by the Concordat of 1801 its parishes were divided between the dioceses of Avignon and Mende. Alès and its cathedral lie near the start of The Regordane Way, or St. Gilles Trail, an ancient road and medieval pilgrimage route.

This is not the diocese of Ales-Terralba in Italy, nor the Ancient Diocese of Alet in south-west FranceThe former French Catholic diocese of Alais (now written Alès, and in Latin: Alesiensis) was created in 1694, out of territory previously part of the diocese of Nîmes. It was suppressed after the French Revolution, with its territory being divided between the diocese of Avignon and the diocese of Mende. Its seat was Alès Cathedral.

The siege of Alès was undertaken by Louis XIII of France, and the city captured on 17 June 1629.

L'École des Mines d'Alès (EMA) was created in 1843 by King Louis Philippe, under the guardianship of the French Ministry of Economy, Finance and Employment, is a French technology and engineering university. From 2012, its full name changed into Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines d'Alès. Founded in 1843, this school was originally formed for study of the mining industry. It is now an engineering school in France Grandes écoles and of the Groupe des écoles des mines.There are three year engineering degree and master's degree programs.

Alais or Allais is the first carbonaceous chondrite meteorite identified. It fell near Alès in 1806 in multiple fragments which together weighed 6 kg (13 lb 4 oz), although only 0.26 kg (9.2 oz) remains. The meteorite contains a number of elements in similar proportions to the Solar System in its primordial state. It also contains organic compounds and water. It has proved to be one of the most important meteorites discovered in France.

Stade Pierre Pibarot is a stadium in Alès, France. It is currently used for football matches and is the home stadium of Olympique Alès. The stadium holds 12,000 spectators. It is named after Pierre Pibarot.

The Parc botanique de la Tour Vieille is a municipal park with botanical collections, located at the Hôtel de Ville in Alès, Gard, Languedoc-Roussillon, France. It is open daily without charge. The park was created by an amateur landscaper, but abandoned for some years before its acquisition by the city in 1973. The city then rehabilitated its grounds, as well as its greenhouse and eponymous old tower, and in 1981 opened it to the public. In 1990 its first botanical inventory identified 200 species and varieties of plants; there are now over 700. The park also contains a miniature golf facility.
