Oakmere

Oakmere hill fort is an Iron Age hill fort, one of many large fortified settlements constructed across Britain during the Iron Age, but one of only seven in the county of Cheshire in northern England. It is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Despite being a low-lying site, Oakmere is still considered a hill fort.

Oakmere Hall is a large house to the southwest of the villages of Cuddington and Sandiway, Cheshire, England, near the junction of the A49 and A556 roads. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It was originally a private house and later became a rehabilitation centre and hospital. It has since been divided into residential apartments.

Abbotts Moss is a 12-hectare (30-acre) nature reserve near Delamere Forest, northwest of Winsford, Cheshire. It is managed by the Cheshire Wildlife Trust under lease from the Forestry Commission and lies within a larger Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The reserve is south of the A556 road near Sandiway and is divided in two by the Whitegate Way, a former railway line now used as a footpath and bridleway.

Delamere is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Delamere and Oakmere, within the unitary authority area of Cheshire West and Chester, in the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. It is approximately 7 miles (11 km) west of Northwich. The population of the civil parish taken at the 2011 census was 1,025. The name of the village comes from the French de la mer "of the sea". The civil parish was abolished on 1 April 2015 to form "Delamere and Oakmere"; parts also went to Kelsall, Utkinton and Cotebrook and Willington.The civil parish was well known for the Delamere Forest, an expanse of oak, pine and sycamore trees which forms the largest woodland in Cheshire. It includes the hills of Old Pale and Eddisbury Hill, part of the Mid Cheshire Ridge. There are several cafés, including the Station House Café at Delamere railway station and Delamere Café in Delamere Forest. Other services include a primary school (Delamere C of E Academy), shop (Delamere Stores), community centre and public house, the Vale Royal Abbey Arms on the A556.

St Peter's Church stands in an isolated position to the south of the village of Delamere, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Middlewich.

The Bluecap Memorial stands in the yard of the Cheshire Hunt Kennels in Kennel Lane, Sandiway, Cheshire, England. Bluecap was a Cheshire foxhound that was famous for winning a race against the hounds of Hugo Meynell of the Quorn Hunt in 1763. The memorial is in sandstone and consists of an obelisk standing on a plinth, with a brass plaque inscribed with a poem. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

Norley is a village and civil parish in Cheshire, England, north of Delamere Forest, near the village of Cuddington. The population at the 2011 census was 1,169. Its name is derived from “Norlegh”, which means “north clearing”.

St John and the Holy Cross Church is in Stable Lane, Cotebrook, Cheshire, England. It is an active Anglican church in the parish of Tarporley, the deanery of Malpas, the archdeaconry of Chester, and the diocese of Chester. It is a daughter church of St Helen, Tarporley with St Thomas, Eaton. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

Ruloe House is a country house 1.75 miles (2.8 km) east of Norley, Cheshire, England. It was built in about 1873 for the Wilbraham estate, and designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. It is constructed in red brick and has red tiled roofs. The house is decorated with strip pilasters. It is in two storeys, with a four-bay south front. On its garden side is a circular turret with a conical roof. The house is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

Delamere railway station opened on 22 June 1870. It serves both the village of Delamere and Delamere Forest in Cheshire, England. The station is 9½ miles (15 km) east of Chester on the Mid-Cheshire Line. There is an hourly service each way between Chester and Manchester in each direction, with Delamere being previously operated as a request stop only until the Spring 2010 timetable change. The station marks one end of the Baker Way footpath.

The Forests of Mara and Mondrem were adjacent medieval forests in Cheshire, England, which in the 11th century extended to over 60 square miles (160 km2), stretching from the Mersey in the north almost to Nantwich in the south, and from the Gowy in the west to the Weaver in the east. Mara and Mondrem were a hunting forest of the Norman Earls of Chester, established soon after 1071 by the first earl, Hugh d'Avranches. They might earlier have been an Anglo-Saxon hunting forest. Game included wild boar, and red, fallow and roe deer. After the earldom lapsed in 1237, the forest rights passed to the Crown, with the monarch's heir being given the title of Earl of Chester. Edward I and James I both hunted in the forests. Clearance for agricultural use began to be permitted after 1215, and by the mid-14th century, large areas of the Forest of Mondrem had been cleared. Deer hunting still continued within the remaining forest in the 17th century, and the forest was not formally disafforested, or removed from forest law, until 1812. The modern Delamere Forest is the remnant of the medieval forests, but little ancient woodland survives.

Sandiway is a village in the civil parish of Cuddington, Cheshire, England. It lies to the southeast of and is contiguous with the village of Cuddington. Sandiway was the birthplace of John Douglas who designed buildings in the centre of Chester, buildings for the Dukes of Westminster and a number of churches in Cheshire. St John's Church, Sandiway, and its lychgate were designed by Douglas and both are Grade II listed buildings.The Blue Cap is the local pub (on the A556) which was built in 1716 and is now named after a famous local foxhound which won a race against a racehorse at Newmarket in 1763 to settle a wager between the Hon John Smith-Barry, then first Master of the Cheshire foxhounds, and owner of Blue Cap, and Hugo Meynell, the father of modern fox hunting. Sandiway Golf Club has been used in final qualifying for The Open golf championship and is a venue for regional amateur finals.The village has one local school, Sandiway Primary School located on Weaverham Road with an adjacent village car park. Sandiway is the home of Blakemere Village, which has shops set in and around an Edwardian stable block with cobbled courtyard. The centre has an indoor and outdoor children's play area as well as a restaurant, falconry and craft workshop. Sandiway has cross-roads where the A49 crosses the A556 at the Shell service station, also known as The Toll Bar, presumably from an ancient charge for using the road.
