Mangotsfield

Mangotsfield School is a secondary school located in Mangotsfield in South Gloucestershire, north of the Kingswood suburb of Bristol.

Mangotsfield railway station was a railway station on the Midland Railway route between Bristol and Birmingham, 5.1 miles (8.2 km) north-east of Bristol Temple Meads and 82 miles (132 km) from Birmingham New Street, serving what is now the Bristol suburb of Mangotsfield. The station was opened in 1845 by the Bristol and Gloucester Railway, but had very little in the way of passenger amenities. The station was resited in 1869 to serve the new Mangotsfield and Bath Branch Line, and became an important junction station with extensive facilities and six platforms. Passenger footfall however failed to match the station's size, though at its peak eight staff were employed. The station closed in 1966 when services to Bath ended as part of the Beeching cuts, and the line through the station closed in 1969. The railway became a cycle path in the 1980s, and is a popular resting point on the route as several of the station's walls and platforms are still in situ.

Page Park is a park in the Staple Hill area of South Gloucestershire.In 1910, the park was donated to the people of Staple Hill by Arthur William Page, the same year he was elected Alderman of the county of Gloucestershire.The land on which the park was formed was originally part of the Hill House estate. The road to the east of the park is named Hill House Road. Nineteen acres of land from the estate were set aside for the park. An official opening took place on 14 December 1910. The National Anthem was sung whilst an oak sapling was planted. In the centre of the park stands an impressive pavilion, known locally as the clock tower because of the four-faced clock upon its roof. The clock tower remains to this day and gives its image as the symbol of the park.The park contains other features: a drinking fountain donated in 1912 seating public toilets a band stand donated in 1927, restored in 2013 tennis courts donated in 1929 a tennis pavilion in 1930 bowling green in 1948The park has a selection of sports fields, accommodating football and cricket teams. It was the start and finish place for the Kingswood Festival marathon in 1985.The park is currently undergoing a transformation to become the green heart of Staple Hill. With help from South Gloucestershire Council, the Big Lottery Fund, and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The creation of a new cafe and community spaces are amongst the improvements. The park is the venue for the Big Lunch; a community event designed to bring together the people of Staple Hill with music, children's rides and family entertainment.

Mangotsfield United Football Club is a football club based in Mangotsfield, Bristol, England. They are currently members of the Hellenic League Premier Division and play at Cossham Street.

Staple Hill is a suburb of Bristol, England, lying outside the city boundary in South Gloucestershire. It is directly east of Fishponds, south of Downend, west of Mangotsfield and north of Soundwell.

Soundwell, Bristol is a suburb of Bristol, England in the South Gloucestershire District. It is situated between Kingswood and Staple Hill. Located centrally in the parish is St. Stephen's Anglican Church and St. Stephen's CofE junior school with approximately 300 pupils. The original St. Stephen's infants school was closed and demolished several years ago to allow for expansion of Soundwell College. Soundwell College was a college of further education, now merged with the City of Bristol College, which maintains a centre in the locality.Soundwell was the home of Soundwell F.C. in the 1940s and 1950s. The current team, Soundwell Victoria, plays in the Bristol and District League. The team play home games at the Star Ground behind Kingswood Leisure Centre, formerly known as Soundwell Swimming Baths before it was developed. The Star Ground was named after the Pub next to the Leisure Centre, although the pub has since been renamed "The Turnpike". Soundwell and surrounding areas were also coal-mining communities in days gone past and also were well known for shoe and boot manufacturing. The name appears to be derived from Old English sund, meaning "healthy". There was once a healing well in the vicinity.

King's Oak Academy, formerly Kingsfield School and Kingswood Grammar School, is a Mathematics and Computing College located in Kingswood in Bristol, England. The education authority Ofsted rated it as "good" in 2018.

The sinking date for Siston Hill Colliery, Siston, Bristol is unknown, but was probably in the late 1790s or early 19th century. There is a surviving accident report dated 1804. This names the colliery owner as a Mrs. Peterson. By 1831 the colliery was under the ownership of Toghill & Company.The 1880 List of Mines names the owner of the pit as S. H. Hadley. The pit was put up for sale in 1889 and the prospectus states that it had four shafts, two of which were sunk to a depth of 570 ft (170 m). The winding shaft was 9 ft (2.7 m) in diameter, walled throughout and had two separate cages. The winding engine was a Boulton and Watt, had a 4-foot-6-inch (1.37 m) stroke and a 12-foot (3.7 m) drum, and could lift 700 to 800 tons of coal a day. The pumping engine had two 19-inch (480 mm) cylinders and was in working order. Above ground was a bank high enough for double screens which sorted the coal before it was loaded for transportation. A tunnel was provided at the bottom of the bank to enable timber and other materials to descend into the pit without first being hauled to the top. A 100-foot-high (30 m) circular chimney stack towered over the colliery.The sale was not a success and the colliery never reopened.

It is in the South Gloucestershire local district, located to the northeast of Bristol and bordered by the Bristol City suburb of Fishponds, and the South Gloucestershire suburbs of Staple Hill, Frenchay, Mangotsfield, and Emersons Green. On 19 January 2020 The Sunday Times ran an article which named Downend as one of the UK's best suburbs.Downend forms, with the suburb of Bromley Heath, the civil parish of Downend and Bromley Heath, created in 2003.

Emersons Green is a suburb of Bristol and parish in the unitary authority of South Gloucestershire. Sitting 7 miles northeast of Bristol, England. It was developed from farming land during the 1990s and early 21st century, and sits within the historic parish of Mangotsfield. Coal was mined from the area during the 19th century. To the south there is a quarry, which has been reactivated. A science and technology park, in conjunction with Bristol University and University of the West of England, named Bristol & Bath Science Park, has been built on an area of land adjacent to the M4 motorway and the A4174 ringroad. Construction of the £300 million Bristol and Bath Science Park began in early 2010. It was opened in September 2011 and is expected to create 6,000 new jobs within the science and technology sector, when it is completed in 2020. A link road connecting the M4 to the Avon ring road (A4174) has now been considered a necessary addition to the area, to accommodate the increase in traffic due to the science park.

Kingswood was, from 1974 to 1996, a non-metropolitan district of the County of Avon, England. The district was formed by the Local Government Act 1972 on 1 April 1974 as part of a reform of local authorities throughout England and Wales. Under the reorganisation, the area surrounding the cities of Bath and Bristol was formed into a new county of "Avon", named after the river that ran through the area. The county was divided into six districts, one of which was formed from the areas of Kingswood and Mangotsfield urban districts with Warmley Rural District from the administrative county of Gloucestershire. On 20 May 1987 the district was granted borough status.Following a review by the Local Government Commission for England, both the County of Avon and Borough of Kingswood were abolished on 1 April 1996. Kingswood was merged with the neighbouring Northavon District to form the unitary authority of South Gloucestershire.
