Neasham Priory

St Mary's Church is an Anglican church in Eryholme, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The church lies on high ground, and is set back from the village's main street. The village was recorded in the Domesday Book and appears to have had a church at the time, a chapel of ease to St Agatha's Church, Gilling West. The oldest surviving above-ground part of the current church is the north arcade, constructed in about 1200, but the foundations of the nave and chancel may be earlier. The very short tower probably dates from later in the 13th century. The nave and chancel were rebuilt in the 14th century, perhaps following a purported Scottish raid on the village in 1319. A belfry was added in the 16th century. In 1887, the church was finally given its own parish, but by this time it was in poor repair. In about 1890, the church was heavily restored, with a new vestry, porch and roof added, a new tower arch, some of the windows replaced, and the floor lowered by one foot. The building was grade II* listed in 1968. It is built in red and brown sandstone with tiled roofs, and consists of a nave, a north aisle, a south porch, a chancel with a north vestry, and a west tower. The tower is low and small, with two stages, quoins, a round-arched bell opening on the west and north sides, each with a chamfered surround and stone slate louvres, and an embattled parapet. Some medieval material has been repositioned inside the porch, including a human figure known as the "Eryholme Madonna". This is of uncertain date, but may well be late mediaeval work associated with the Virgin Mary. Inside the church is a simple font, dating from about 1200.

Neasham is a village approximately four miles to the south east of Darlington in County Durham, England.

Eryholme is a village and civil parish in the district of Richmondshire in North Yorkshire, England. As the population remained less than 100 in the 2011 census, information is included with that of Dalton-on-Tees.The village is situated on the south bank of the River Tees, opposite Hurworth, 4.5 miles (7.2 km) south-east of Darlington.In this part of the Tees Valley the river forms many loops called 'holmes'. The word 'holm' is of Viking origin and means "island formed by a river". Eryholme's name is, however, a corruption of its original name 'Erghum'. This name means shieling - a shelter for livestock, which comes from the Old Irish word 'airgh'. This word was introduced into Yorkshire place names by Norwegian Vikings who had lived in Ireland for a number of generations and adopted many Irish words. The Church of St Mary the Virgin in Eryholme is a grade II* listed plain sandstone building, originally built c.1200 and modified in the 13th, 14th and 16th centuries. Set inside the east wall of the porch is a small, ancient carving of a human figure. A distinct heart outline in the chest proves the identity of Christ. The notion of the sacred heart proliferated in the 13th century. This date is also consistent with the splayed tunic. Pevsner suggested it was Anglo-Danish but the sacred heart excludes this. It represents a time of burgeoning new religious philosophies from the Cistercian leader St Bernard of Clairvaux and the local Saint Godric of Finchale, who was in contact with the Cistercians and active in the Tees Valley. The registers at the church date from 1565.There are the remains of a Victorian era brick and tile works in the village. There used to be a railway station called Eryholme but it was located at Dalton-on-Tees, some 1.9 miles (3 km) south-west of the village. Passenger services ceased in 1911 but were restarted during the Second World War for personnel serving at the nearby RAF Croft.The chief activity is farming, the farms forming part of the Neasham estate owned by the Wrightson family. The village was famous for the breeding of shorthorn cattle and a cow sold to the Colling brothers became part of the original stock from which were bred the Durham Ox and Comet.

Neasham Fen is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Darlington district of County Durham, England. It lies on the floodplain of the River Tees, 5.2 km south-east of Darlington. Neasham Fen is a small in-filled kettle hole. Analysis of the deposits at the site has provided an important record of the vegetational history and changing climate of the area during the Flandrian period. Radiocarbon dates of between 9082±90 and 1213±60 yr BP have been obtained from the deposits, which have also yielded pollen records covering the same period.

Hurworth House School was a non-selective independent school located in Hurworth-on-Tees, in the borough of Darlington, England. There were approximately 130 pupils on the school roll, aged 4–16, as of July 2010.On Tuesday 29 June 2010 it was announced that Polam Hall proposals had fallen through and that Hurworth House was to close for good. The site of the school is now home to a special educational school of the same name, which opened in 2011.

Hurworth-on-Tees is a village in the borough of Darlington, within the ceremonial county of County Durham, England. It is situated in the civil parish of Hurworth. The village lies to the south of Darlington on the River Tees, close to its meeting point with the River Skerne, and immediately adjoins the village of Hurworth Place, which forms part of the same civil parish.

The Old Hall is situated on Hurworth Green, in the village of Hurworth-on-Tees in County Durham, England. It is number 50 on The Green. Built in the mid-18th century, with 19th century modifications and additions, the house of red brick and has three storeys and a basement. There is a slate roof with five brick chimneys. A single-story pavilion is on the left. The front and rear doors have a fanlight and are under Roman Ionic pediments supported by columns. A little way south from the back garden lies the River Tees. An iron fence separates its grounds from the green. A drive runs from behind its gates to the main road, cutting through the green. The house is a Grade II* Listed Building.

Dinsdale Park is a 19th-century mansion and former Spa hotel at Low Dinsdale, near Darlington, County Durham, England now converted into residential apartments. It is a Grade II listed building. Low Dinsdale Manor estate, anciently the seat of the Surtees family, was acquired by John Lambton of Lambton in 1770. In 1789, during drilling for coal, a natural spring of sulphurated mineral water was discovered on the northern bank of the River Tees at Dinsdale. The first Spa was established there in 1797. In 1829 John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham built the Dinsdale Spa Hotel on his estate to a design by architect Ignatius Bonomi. The three storey seven bayed mansion provided accommodation for seventy visitors. The business was not greatly successful and the property was sold for residential use, together with the manor, in 1844 to Henry George Surtees (High Sheriff of Durham) a descendant of the ancient family. Following the sale of the property in 1914 by Aubone Surtees, the building has had various uses, including a psychiatric hospital, a local authority residential school and a nursing home. The grounds were laid out as a golf course and more recently the building has been converted into residential apartments.

Ann Heron was a British woman who was murdered on 3 August 1990 at her home in Darlington, County Durham, by an unidentified killer. The case was heavily featured in British media as well as on the BBC programme Crimewatch in October 1990, but her murder remains unsolved. Her husband, who was having an affair at the time, was charged with the murder in 2005 after his semen was found in samples taken from Heron's throat, but the case was subsequently dropped due to lack of evidence. He claims he has an alibi but police feel he cannot adequately account for his movements for the crucial part of the day. He remains a suspect in the case.In 2020 a self-proclaimed investigator claimed that Michael Benson, an escaped prisoner who was on the run in Hampshire at the time, was a possible suspect. Jen Jarvie had watched the October 1990 edition of Crimewatch that featured Heron's murder and then watched the following month's edition, concluding that one of the criminals featured fitted her profile of the killer. However, Durham Constabulary investigated the alleged links to Benson and found there was no evidence to place Benson in the area at the time of the murder, and also revealed that they were "all but certain" he was living abroad at the time of the attack. Durham Constabulary eliminated Benson from their enquiries, concluding that he "is not and never has been a suspect".

Low Dinsdale Manor is a privately owned, much altered, and extended medieval moated fortified manor house situated on the north bank of the River Tees at Low Dinsdale, near Darlington, County Durham, England. It is a Grade II* listed building. The manor was owned by the Surtees family from the 12th century. Several members of the Surtees of Dinsdale family served as High Sheriff of Northumberland. In 1511 on the death of the last male of the family it passed to his daughter Katherine Place. Rowland Place was High Sheriff of Durham in 1654. The house was the birthplace of his son artist Francis Place (1647–1728). In 1718 the manor was sold to Cuthbert Routh and in 1770 to John Lambton of Lambton. In 1789 a mineral spring was discovered on the estate and a Spa was established. Lambton's son John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham built Dinsdale Spa Hotel in 1829. In 1844 the Earl sold the manor to Henry George Surtees (High Sheriff of Durham 1862) a descendant of the ancient family. He substantially extended and altered the house in 1876 adding new bays to the medieval core and two cross-gabled wings. In 1914 the manor was sold to Sir Henry Havelock-Allan Bt. A large part of the estate was sold for the creation of a golf course.

Hurworth School is an coeducational secondary school located on Croft Road, Hurworth-on-Tees, in the borough of Darlington, England. It is part of the Swift Academies Multi Academy Trust. It is an over-subscribed 5 form entry comprehensive school, with accommodation for around 650 pupils in the 11 to 16 years age-range. Academic courses lead to examinations at GCSE level and substantial numbers of pupils move on to Higher Education. Pupils are drawn largely from the villages of Hurworth, Middleton St George and Neasham as well as from an area of south-east Darlington.

Firth Moor, or Firthmoor is an area in the borough of Darlington and the ceremonial county of County Durham, England. It is situated to the south-east of Darlington town centre.
