Clarence City Council (or City of Clarence) is a local government body in Tasmania, and one of the five municipalities that constitutes the Greater Hobart Area. The Clarence local government area has a population of 61,531, covering the eastern shore of the Derwent River from Otago to the South Arm Peninsula and the smaller localities of Cambridge, Richmond, and Seven Mile Beach. The administrative centre and main commercial district of Clarence is Rosny Park, approximately 5 kilometres from the CBD of Hobart. Bellerive Oval lies immediately to the south, and the Hobart International Airport is located further north-west along the Tasman Highway. The area that now constitutes the City of Clarence was once part of the traditional land of the Moomairemener, a sub-group of the Tasmanian Aborigines. In 1803, the island of Tasmania (then Van Diemen's Land) was colonised by United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, who subsequently established the settlement of Hobart Town. By the 1820s the settlement had spread to the 'Clarence Plains', but the area remained primarily agricultural until the mid to late 20th century, when it experienced a residential development boom. Since then Clarence has grown rapidly to become a self-sufficient city.

The electoral division of Rumney is one of the 15 electoral divisions in the Tasmanian Legislative Council (upper house). The division is located in Southern Tasmania to the east of the division of Pembroke. The electorate is named after Mount Rumney in outer Hobart. The division covers an area of 434 km2 and includes a number of outer Hobart localities including; Lauderdale, Rokeby, Cambridge, Midway Point and Richmond. The division is held by Labor member Sarah Lovell. As of the last election on the 6 May 2023, the division had a total enrolment of 27,606 electors.

The Canopus Hill Observatory, located approximately 12 km from Hobart in Tasmania, Australia, is an optical astronomy observatory belonging to the University of Tasmania (UTAS). Due to the high southern latitude, the Canopus Hill Observatory is able to observe and study the Magellanic Clouds. However, the observatory has closed down due to the "encroaching light pollution from the Hobart suburbs". According to the Astronomical Society, light pollution reduces the vision of the night sky, becoming a "major menace to amateur and professional astronomers alike".

Mount Rumney is a semi-rural locality in the local government area (LGA) of Clarence in the Hobart LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) east of the town of Rosny Park. The 2016 census has a population of 267 for the state suburb of Mount Rumney. It is a suburb of Hobart. The suburb is based on the slopes of the mountain, Mount Rumney, part of the Meehan Range.

The Mount Pleasant Radio Observatory is a radio astronomy based observatory owned and operated by University of Tasmania, located 20 km east of Hobart in Cambridge, Tasmania. It is home to three radio astronomy antennas and the Grote Reber Museum.

Cambridge Aerodrome (ICAO: YCBG), also known as Cambridge Airport, is a minor airport located in Cambridge, a suburb of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It is located only a few kilometres from the primary airport, Hobart International Airport. Cambridge has been the primary site of aeronautics in Hobart from its opening in the 1920s. In July 1934, the federal government compulsorily acquired 190 acres (77 ha) of land from a local farmer to establish an aerodrome on the current site. It served as Hobart's main airport until the International Airport opened in 1956. Today, it is the base of Par Avion, which specialises in day trips and scenic flights around Hobart and the South West Wilderness of Tasmania; the Aeroclub of Southern Tasmania; and Heli Resources, a Helicopter Company that focuses on aerial work and flights in Antarctica.

Acton Park is a residential / rural locality in the local government area (LGA) of Clarence in the Hobart LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) east of the town of Rosny Park. The 2021 census recorded a population of 2293 for Acton Park.It is a rural suburb of Hobart. In 2011 there were 2165 people living in Acton Park, ten of which being Indigenous. 51.2% were male and 48.8% were female.Acton Park is bounded to the east by the southern portion of the Meehan Range, to the south by Ralphs Bay, and to the east by Roches Beach, Single Hill and Seven Mile Beach. It is one of the more sought after living locations due to its easy commuting distance to Hobart, and because of the semi-rural character of the suburb itself.

Mornington is a residential locality in the local government area (LGA) of Clarence in the Hobart LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) north-east of the town of Rosny Park. The 2016 census recorded a population of 2265 for the state suburb of Mornington.It is a suburb of the City of Clarence. It is part of greater Hobart, located approximately 7 kilometres from the CBD. It is located between Warrane and Cambridge, is nearby to Mount Rumney and runs parallel to the Tasman Highway. Mornington is a primarily residential suburb, although it is also home to the Mornington Industrial Estate and is served by Rosny Park for commercial services. The main facilities are Clarence Council Depot, Main Roads and Transport Depot, a Service Tasmania vehicle inspection facility, a Fire and Ambulance Service, and MacKillop College.

MacKillop Catholic College is an independent Roman Catholic co-educational college for Years 7 to 11 in the Hobart suburb of Mornington, Tasmania, Australia. The College is named in honour of the Australian educationalist, nun and co-founder of the Institute of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart, Mary MacKillop. The college also has an association with the Christian Brothers founded by Edmund Rice. MacKillop and Rice are key sources of inspiration for the school community. MacKillop Catholic College is the only Catholic secondary college servicing Hobart's eastern shore. The college is a member of the Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools.

The South Arm Highway (part of the B33 road route) is a highway serving the southern suburbs of Hobart, on the eastern shore of the River Derwent in Tasmania, Australia. The highway is a major trunk road that carries heavy commuter traffic south from the Eastern Outlet to Howrah and Rokeby. As one of the Tasman Highway's principle Feeders and one of the eastern shore's major transport corridors, The South Arm Highway facilitates the movement of traffic between the suburbs and satellite communities to the south with the city centre and ultimately, other major cross city highways. With annual average daily traffic (AADT) of 17,000, the highway is considered a major traffic corridor within Hobart. The designation "South Arm Highway" arises from its journey south (via Rokeby Road) to South Arm.

Howrah Beach is a 1.2 km (1 mi) stretch of recreational beach situated along the River Derwent in Howrah, a suburb of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. The south-facing beach neighbours Bellerive Beach to the west and is bookended by Howrah Point to the east. The beach has views of the Derwent estuary, the neighbouring suburb of Tranmere, Sandy Bay on the western shore, and southern views of South Arm, Tinderbox and the northern tip of Bruny Island. Howrah Beach is backed by a narrow tree-lined reserve and private properties, the Clarence Foreshore Trail, Clarence High School adjoining Wentworth Park, Howrah Community Centre, Howrah Men's Shed and the Sunshine Tennis Club.

Wentworth Park is the home ground of Clarence Zebras FC, but can be used by other teams in other sports such as touch football, and Ultimate Frisbee tournaments. In the summer it is used as a cricket ground. It is a picturesque facility located adjacent to Howrah Beach and allows for views across the River Derwent. The facility is served by three main pitches, as well as a training ground and a touch pitch. In the early 1990s Clarence United FC (then called Phoenix) upgraded the clubrooms, bar, and changing room facilities. The headquarters for Tasmanian Touch Association and the offices and grounds of Southern Touch, where they hold summer and winter rosters on up to 10 touch fields. The ground is not owned by the Clarence United FC, but is a Clarence City Council facility who lease the ground to the club on a long-term basis on the proviso that other sports be permitted to share the facilities with Clarence United FC. The site was originally coastal lagoons, and the city council had historically used the site as landfill rubbish tip. In 2003, the ground was featured in the media on ABC Stateline, when local residents suggested that DDTs, and other Organochlorides had been used to control vermin and mosquitoes when the site was a rubbish dump, and that these chemicals were responsible for higher than usual rates of diseases such as cancer in the area. An investigation was carried out, collecting soil, groundwater and soil gas data. An environmental assessment report was published in response, suggesting that the human health risk posed by latent chemicals was negligible.
