Hardy is an unincorporated community in southwestern Bedford County and northeastern Franklin County, Virginia, United States. The community lies along State Route 634 and is approximately nine miles southeast of Roanoke.

William Byrd High School is a public secondary school located in Roanoke County, Virginia and is part of the Roanoke County Public Schools system. The school has many successful athletic programs as well as award-winning band, choir, theater, forensics, and scholastic bowl programs.

The Roland E. Cook Elementary School is a historic school building at 412 South Poplar Street in Vinton, Virginia. Built in 1915 as a T-shaped Classical Revival structure, it was expanded in 1924 to its present H shape, at which time it became Vinton High School. It served as a high school until 1933, when the William Byrd High School was built, and was then converted to an elementary school. It originally served the area's white population during the Jim Crow period of segregated facilities, and was integrated in 1966–67. It closed in 1999, and was mothballed after a period of use by an alternative school.The school was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Vinton is a town in eastern Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. The population was 8,059 at the 2020 census. Vinton is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Roanoke Region of Virginia.

Riverdale is a neighborhood in southeast Roanoke, Virginia, in the United States. The neighborhood lies along the south bank of the Roanoke River. It is bordered by the neighborhoods of Morningside on the west, Kenwood on the north, Garden City on the south and the town of Vinton on the east. The neighborhood is predominantly residential in character, and its development patterns are typical of those experienced for an American city during the early to mid-20th century.

The William Byrd High School Historic District encompasses a historic school complex at 100 and 156 Highland Road in Vinton, Virginia. Built in 1933, the main building is a good local example of Classical Revival architecture, while a two-story annex added in 1938 exhibits Moderne styling. The facility also includes a single-story vocational training building (1940), and athletic fields. The school exhibits the change in school building trends, as differentiated from the earlier Roland E. Cook Elementary School (1915). Originally built as a segregated school serving white students, it was integrated in 1964–5, but closed in 1969.The school was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.

The Roanoke Region ( ROH-ə-nohk) is the area of the Commonwealth of Virginia surrounding the city of Roanoke. Its usage may refer to the metropolitan statistical area or the Roanoke Valley, but it sometimes includes areas in the Allegheny Mountains and New River Valley which includes Alleghany County, Montgomery County, Covington, Clifton Forge, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Radford. Bedford County and Floyd County are sometimes included as part of the region. The Roanoke Region, excluding communities in the New River Valley, has a population of 316,802. If including the New River Valley, its population is 475,130. Both the Roanoke Region and the Roanoke MSA are sometimes referred to as the Roanoke Valley (or Greater Roanoke Valley) and are often included in the NewVa region. The Roanoke Valley, however, more accurately describes the geographic depression between the Blue Ridge Mountains where many of the region's communities are located (see Roanoke Valley). Notable places and landmarks in the Roanoke Region include the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Allegheny Mountains, the Roanoke River, Virginia Tech, the Mill Mountain Star, the Booker T. Washington monument, the Fincastle Court House, and Smith Mountain Lake.

Stewartsville is a census-designated place (CDP) in southwestern Bedford County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2020 census was 533. The CDP is located along State Route 24, between Vinton and Chamblissburg. It is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Booth–Lovelace House, also known as the Overhome Bed and Breakfast, is a historic home located near Hardy, Franklin County, Virginia. It was built in approximately 1859 and is a large, two-story, frame dwelling with weatherboard siding. It has a metal-sheathed hip roof above a bracketed Italianate cornice and three Greek Revival one-story porches. Also on the property are a contributing office / dwelling, ash house, granary, barn, and spring. The house was converted to a bed and breakfast in the 1990s.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Mecca Gardens is a Roanoke, Virginia neighborhood and is the most eastern neighborhood within the city limits It borders the neighborhoods of Wildwood on the west, Eastgate on the north across Orange Avenue, the town of Vinton on the south and Roanoke County on the east.

Kenwood is a Roanoke, Virginia neighborhood located in southeast Roanoke, along the north bank of the Roanoke River. It borders the neighborhoods of Morningside on the west, Fallon on the north, Riverdale on the south and the Town of Vinton on the east. The neighborhood is predominantly residential in character with the bulk of commercial development built along its Virginia State Route 24 (Dale Avenue) frontage. Its development patterns typical of those experienced for an American city during the early 20th century.

Fallon is a Roanoke, Virginia neighborhood located in southeast Roanoke. It borders the neighborhoods of Hollins on the north, Kenwood to the south and Belmont on the west. The eastern and part of the northern border is shared with the town of Vinton. Today the neighborhood is bisected by Virginia State Route 24 (Dale Avenue) and is bordered by Tinker Creek to the east.
