It is situated in the easternmost tip of Lower Saxony, not far from the river Elbe, approx. 30 km northeast of Salzwedel, and 20 km west of Wittenberge. Gartow is also the seat of the Samtgemeinde ("collective municipality") Gartow.

Gorleben is a small municipality (Gemeinde) in the Gartow region of the Lüchow-Dannenberg district in the far north-east of Lower Saxony, Germany, a region also known as the Wendland. Gorleben was first recorded as a town by the rulers of Dannenberg in 1360; there was a fort on the site. The name "Gorleben" probably comes from Goor ("silt"; in Slavic, however, Gor means "mountain") and leben ("heritage"). Gorleben is known as the site of a controversial radioactive waste disposal facility, currently used as an intermediate storage facility initially planned to serve with the salt dome Gorleben as a future deep final repository for waste from nuclear reactors. As of September 28, 2020 this is no longer the case as the entire area has been deemed unfit by 70 geologists in a national geographic survey for final repositories. It has attracted frequent protests from environmentalists since the 1970s.

Meynbach is a river of northeastern Germany. It flows from its source near Hühnerland in a generally western direction along the border between Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It flows into the Alte Elde near Krinitz. A branch of the Meynbach flows from Hühnerland to the east, and joins the Tarnitz north of Reckenzin.

The Nausdorf Canal (German: Nausdorfer Kanal) is a canal in the municipalities of Lenzen and Karstädt in the northwest of Brandenburg, Germany. It links two lakes — the Rambower See, in Karstädt, and the Rudower See, in Lenzen — and runs through the Rambower Moor. It takes its name from the village of Nausdorf, part of Lenzen, located midway along the canal. Already in the 15th century, there was a mill stream that powered a mill in Nausdorf that existed until 1833. The canal was built between 1862 and 1879, and expanded in 1924/1925 to its present dimensions.The canal is about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) long and was designed with a width of 8–10 metres (26–33 ft); today at points it is a maximum of 3 metres (9.8 ft) wide. Its depth is about 1 metre (3 ft 3 in); its bed is covered with a thick layer of mud. The watercourse is not navigable. It is popular with anglers due to its large stock of whitefish.
