Dinah Washington Park

Illinois’ 13th Senate district is one of 59 districts in the Illinois Senate. The seat stretches along the southern shoreline of Lake Michigan, from Chicago’s Magnificent Mile to the Indiana border. The seat is home to several Chicago landmarks, including Navy Pier, Millennium Park, Grant Park, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium, Soldier Field, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the University of Chicago. Neighborhoods located within its boundaries include Streeterville and the South Side communities of Kenwood, Hyde Park, and South Chicago. The 13th district is home to 119,000 Black residents, who comprise a majority of the seat’s 217,000 total inhabitants. In recent years, this has made the seat a launching pad for several Black elected officials in Illinois. Notable examples include former President Barack Obama, who springboarded from this seat to the U.S. Senate in 2004, and state Attorney General Kwame Raoul, who represented the district from 2004 to 2019. Democrats have held this seat with ease for more than six decades. In 2020, Joe Biden (who spent eight years as Obama’s vice president) carried it by a whopping 89% to 10% margin over Donald Trump.

Chicago Vocational High School (also known as Chicago Vocational Career Academy and locally known as CVCA or CVS) is a public 4–year vocational high school located in the Avalon Park neighborhood on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Opened in 1941, the school is operated by Chicago Public Schools district.

The Mayfair Academy of Fine Arts is a dance school located on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. This dance school was founded in 1957 by tap dancer Tommy Sutton. It was created by Sutton to give young black children in the area the same opportunities that white children in that time period had. Mayfair's enrollment has increased from about 90 kids enrolled in classes at Mayfair to over 800 kids enrolled in classes at Mayfair. Mayfair has been operating for over 50 years now. Due to recent increase of violent crimes in the South Side area since July 2012, Peggy Sutton, who is Tommy Sutton's daughter and currently runs the dance school, is planning on moving the studio into the Calumet Heights area out of concern for the students' wellbeing. Mayfair moved to 8701 S. Bennett Ave. but ceased operations in 2021.

The Avalon Regal Theater (originally the Avalon Theater, and later the New Regal Theater) is a music hall located at 1641 East 79th Street, bordered by the Avalon Park and South Shore neighborhoods on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. It is a noted venue for African-American performers. The theater opened in August 1927.

South Shore International College Preparatory High School (commonly known as South Shore) is a public four–year selective enrollment magnet high school located in the South Shore neighborhood on the Southeast Side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Opened in 1940 as South Shore High School, the magnet school is a part of the Chicago Public Schools district.

Hyde Park Township is a former civil township in Cook County, Illinois, United States that existed as a separate municipality from 1861 until 1889 when it was annexed into the city of Chicago. Its borders are Pershing Road (formerly 39th Street) on the north, State Street on the west, Lake Michigan and the Indiana state line on the east, and 138th Street and the Calumet River on the south. This region comprised much of what is now known as the South Side of Chicago. During Chicago's initial explosive growth, it developed from an adjacent swampy area to a full-fledged residential, commercial and resort community. However, due to infrastructure limitations, legislative incentives and the lure of better municipal services it, along with numerous adjoining townships, agreed to be annexed into the city of Chicago, creating the largest city in the United States at that time.

The South Shore Bungalow Historic District is a residential historic district in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The district contains 229 Chicago bungalows and twenty other residential buildings built between 1911 and 1930. As homes became more accessible to families in early 20th century Chicago, thousands of bungalows were built to meet the housing demand. While bungalows were affordable mainly due to their uniform designs, their builders changed details such as color and entrance position to keep each home unique. The South Shore bungalows were among the first built in the city, as South Shore was already a popular neighborhood when the bungalow boom began, and the district contains many 1910s stucco bungalows; however, every bungalow built after 1917 is brick.The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 10, 2008.

The Anton E. Hanson House is a historic house at 7610 S. Ridgeland Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Real estate developer Anton E. Hanson had the house built for his family in 1912. The house also allowed Hanson to test concrete block construction, an increasingly popular method that Hanson later used in two other houses. Architect Perley Hale designed the American Foursquare house. Hale's design added decorative stone features to the concrete exterior, including balustrades on the porch and balcony and a cornice below the balcony.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 9, 2006.

Avalon Park, located on the south side of the U.S. city of Chicago, Illinois, is one of the city's 77 semi-official community areas and is named after its main park. Its boundaries are 76th St. to the north, South Chicago Ave. to the east and 87th St. to the south. The community area includes the neighborhoods of Avalon Park, Marynook and Stony Island Park.

South Shore is one of 77 defined community areas of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Located on the city's South Side, the area is named for its location along the city's southern lakefront. Although South Shore has seen a greater than 40% decrease in residents since Chicago's population peaked in the 1950s, the area remains one of the most densely populated neighborhoods on the South Side. The community benefits from its location along the waterfront, its accessibility to Lake Shore Drive, and its proximity to major institutions and attractions such as the University of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry, and Jackson Park.

Las Casas Occupational High School was an alternative high school located at 8401 South Saginaw Avenue in the South Chicago area of Chicago, Illinois, United States. The school, a part of Chicago Public Schools (CPS), intended to educate autistic, cognitively delayed, and behavior disordered students so they could take jobs.By February 2009, CPS announced that the school would close because of building deficiencies and layout problems. The school was given a reprieve, and was eventually closed at the end of the 2010-11 school year.

Muhammad University of Islam (MUI) is a Nation of Islam (NOI)-affiliated preschool to 12th Grade school in the South Shore area of Chicago, Illinois, United States, located next to Mosque Maryam. Every major NOI mosque has a MUI. The schools are headed by the Nation of Islam's Ministry of Education, led by Dr. Larry Muhammad. Established in 1930, MUI is the first Islamic Black school system in America.
