Avalon Park, Chicago

The Avalon Regal Theater (originally the Avalon Theater, and later the New Regal Theater) is a music hall located at 1641 East 79th Street, bordered by the Avalon Park and South Shore neighborhoods on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. It is a noted venue for African-American performers. The theater opened in August 1927.

Illinois’ 13th Senate district is one of 59 districts in the Illinois Senate. The seat stretches along the southern shoreline of Lake Michigan, from Chicago’s Magnificent Mile to the Indiana border. The seat is home to several Chicago landmarks, including Navy Pier, Millennium Park, Grant Park, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium, Soldier Field, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the University of Chicago. Neighborhoods located within its boundaries include Streeterville and the South Side communities of Kenwood, Hyde Park, and South Chicago. The 13th district is home to 119,000 Black residents, who comprise a majority of the seat’s 217,000 total inhabitants. In recent years, this has made the seat a launching pad for several Black elected officials in Illinois. Notable examples include former President Barack Obama, who springboarded from this seat to the U.S. Senate in 2004, and state Attorney General Kwame Raoul, who represented the district from 2004 to 2019. Democrats have held this seat with ease for more than six decades. In 2020, Joe Biden (who spent eight years as Obama’s vice president) carried it by a whopping 89% to 10% margin over Donald Trump.

79th Street (Chatham) is an electrified commuter rail station along the Metra Electric Main Line in the Chatham neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. It is located at and over 79th Street, and is 9.9 miles (15.9 km) away from the northern terminus at Millennium Station. In Metra's zone-based fare system, 79th Street is in zone B. As of 2018, the station is the 212th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 50 weekday boardings.On July 10, 2023, the station was temporarily closed to the public for reconstruction. The project, which will update the station and make the platform ADA-Accessible, is expected to take seven months.East of this station is another Metra Electric station along 79th Street (known as Cheltenham) along the South Chicago Branch. Like much of the main branch of the Metra Electric line, 79th Street-Chatham is built on elevated tracks near the embankment of a bridge over 79th Street. This bridge also carries the Amtrak line that runs parallel to it, carrying the City of New Orleans and Illini and Saluki trains. Parking is available only on the southwest corner of 79th Street and Woodlawn Avenue. The former Nickel Plate Railroad passed on a long bridge over the Illinois Central (the current tracks) just north of the station. The bridge still exists, but rail service is long gone.

The Anton E. Hanson House is a historic house at 7610 S. Ridgeland Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Real estate developer Anton E. Hanson had the house built for his family in 1912. The house also allowed Hanson to test concrete block construction, an increasingly popular method that Hanson later used in two other houses. Architect Perley Hale designed the American Foursquare house. Hale's design added decorative stone features to the concrete exterior, including balustrades on the porch and balcony and a cornice below the balcony.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 9, 2006.

83rd Street (Avalon Park) is an electrified commuter rail station along the Metra Electric Main Line in Chicago, Illinois. The station is located over 83rd Street near Ellis Avenue and is 10.4 miles (16.7 km) away from the northern terminus at Millennium Station. Despite the name of the station, it is actually located in Chatham, not the Avalon Park neighborhood for which it is named; however, it is only a short distance from Avalon Park. In Metra's zone-based fare system, 83rd Street-Avalon Park station is in zone B. As of 2018, the station is the 209th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 56 weekday boardings. The station's rank is tied with the neighboring 87th Street (Woodruff) station.Like much of the main branch of the Metra Electric line, 83rd Street-Avalon Park is built on elevated tracks near the embankment of a bridge over 83rd Street. This bridge also carries an Amtrak line (owned by Canadian National Railway) that runs parallel to it, carrying the City of New Orleans, Illini, and Saluki trains. The former Nickel Plate Railroad ran just east of the Metra tracks. It also had a station stop at 83rd Street. The Nickel Plate right-of-way now is overgrown with trees. There is another 83rd Street station on the South Chicago Branch. Side-street parking is available on 83rd Street between the tracks and Woodlawn Avenue. Currently, no bus connections are available.

75th Street (Grand Crossing) is an electrified commuter rail station along the Metra Electric Main Line in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. It is located at and over both 75th Street and South Chicago Avenue, and is 9.3 miles (15.0 km) away from the northern terminus at Millennium Station. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Grand Crossing is in zone B. As of 2018, the station is the 231st busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 14 weekday boardings.75th Street station is the first station on the main line after the South Chicago Branch diverges. The station and the neighborhood that surrounds it were named for the Grand Crossing, an on-grade railway junction constructed in 1853 by mutual agreement between the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway (New York Central) and the Illinois Central Railroad in settlement of a right-of-way feud. By 1912, this on-grade crossing was eliminated when the successor line to the LS & MS was elevated. The now abandoned Nickel Plate Railroad tracks also crisscrossed the area. Another elevated crossing was constructed for the Chicago Skyway in 1958. As of 2011, these lines are owned by Metra, Canadian National Railway, and Norfolk Southern Railway. No parking is available for this station, however the Chicago Transit Authority does provide bus service here.

South Shore International College Preparatory High School (commonly known as South Shore) is a public four–year selective enrollment magnet high school located in the South Shore neighborhood on the Southeast Side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Opened in 1940 as South Shore High School, the magnet school is a part of the Chicago Public Schools district.

Grand Crossing Park is a public park at 7655 S. Ingleside Avenue in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Opened in 1915, the park was planned by the South Park Commission, which was responsible for adding several parks in dense, poor South Side neighborhoods. While the South Park Commission designed the park and its facilities in-house, its designs were heavily influenced by the work of the Olmsted Brothers and D. H. Burnham and Company in its earlier parks. The park originally included a Beaux-Arts fieldhouse, a swimming pool, outdoor gymnasiums, a baseball field, tennis courts, and running and walking paths. The fieldhouse includes indoor gymnasiums, meeting rooms, and a series of murals titled An Allegory of Recreation.The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 8, 2006.

Muhammad University of Islam (MUI) is a Nation of Islam (NOI)-affiliated preschool to 12th Grade school in the South Shore area of Chicago, Illinois, United States, located next to Mosque Maryam. Every major NOI mosque has a MUI. The schools are headed by the Nation of Islam's Ministry of Education, led by Dr. Larry Muhammad. Established in 1930, MUI is the first Islamic Black school system in America.
