Formartine (Scottish Gaelic: Fearann Mhàrtainn meaning "Martin's land") is a committee area in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This district extends north from the River Don to the River Ythan. It has a population of 36,478 (2001 Census). The committee area was formed in 1996 from part of the former district of Banff and Buchan. Formartine has experienced rapid population growth, particularly around Ellon and Oldmeldrum, and in the south east where development has spread outwith the city of Aberdeen. By contrast, the area around Turriff retains strong dependency on the traditional agricultural economy. The area's coastline and rural environment offer recreation potential including the Formartine and Buchan Way.

Meldrum House is a Category B listed country house and estate in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It dates to around 1625 (although its datestone is not in its original position), and it received its historic designation in 1971.

The A947 is a single-carriageway road in Scotland that links Aberdeen to Banff via several towns in Aberdeenshire, including Newmachar, Oldmeldrum, Fyvie and Turriff. Approximately half a mile before Oldmeldrum are views of Bennachie. The A947 has a poor safety record, with over 20 fatal crashes occurring between 2005 and 2018.

The Battle of Inverurie, also known as the Battle of Barra, was fought in the north-east of Scotland and was a victory for the Scottish king Robert Bruce over his chief domestic enemy, John Comyn, 3rd Earl of Buchan. Though part of the wider Wars of Scottish Independence, it is more properly viewed as an episode in a brief but bitter civil war. It was followed by the Harrying of Buchan, a violent act of destruction of property long remembered with bitterness in Buchan. The battle was fought in May 1308 according to Fordun. However, Barbour states clearly that it was fought at Christmas of 1307. Many current historians accept Fordun's date, but Barron and some others believe that Bower misinterpreted Fordun's notes. The battlefield was added to the Inventory of Historic Battlefields in Scotland in 2011.

Oldmeldrum (commonly known as Meldrum) is a village and parish in the Formartine area of Aberdeenshire, not far from Inverurie in North East Scotland. With a population of around 2,187, Oldmeldrum falls within Scotland's top 300 centres of population. Meldrum Academy is a secondary school run by Aberdeenshire Council in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It was established in 2002 with S1 and S2 pupils only. S2 pupils came from nearby Ellon and Inverurie Academy. Princess Anne opened the building in 2002 and Andrew Sutherland was the first head teacher. The acting head teacher is Ian Jackson. Old Meldrum railway station was a railway station in Old Meldrum, Aberdeenshire. It was the terminus of the Inverury and Old Meldrum Junction Railway.

The Inverury and Old Meldrum Junction Railway was a railway company in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, that opened a short branch line between the places in its name. (The spelling has been changed over the years.) It was built by local people to revive the fortunes of a market town that had declined, and it opened in 1856. The railway was a commercial failure, and it was soon leased to the larger Great North of Scotland Railway (GNoSR), and it was absorbed by the GNoSR in 1866. Road vehicle competition worsened the railway's already weak position and in 1931 the passenger service was discontinued. In 1966 the branch line was completely closed down.
