Philo is a census-designated place in Mendocino County, California, United States. It is located 6 miles (10 km) northwest of Boonville, at an elevation of 331 feet (101 m). The population was 319 at the 2020 census.Philo is located in Anderson Valley in western Mendocino County. Situated along Indian Creek as it flows into the Navarro River, Philo is the home of KZYX, the local public radio station. Two small specialty lumber mills in Philo are all that remain of a once vigorous timber economy in Anderson Valley. Philo is the heart of the Anderson Valley wine region. Hendy Woods State Park is a California state park, located in the Anderson Valley of Mendocino County. It is known for its old-growth coast redwoods and also provides camping facilities near the wineries of the Anderson Valley. It is named after Joshua Hendy, who owned the land and stipulated that it be protected; it passed through several owners after Hendy without being logged, before becoming part of the California State Park system in 1958.

The Anderson Valley AVA is an American Viticultural Area centered on the Anderson Valley in Mendocino County, California. It is known primarily for its Pinot noir and sparkling wine production. Lying 10 to 15 miles (16 to 24 km) from the Pacific Ocean, the AVA is prone to wide diurnal temperature variation of between 40 and 50 °F (22 and 28 °C). The valley often has long Indian summers. Wineries in the AVA host an annual Alsatian wine festival where locally produced Riesling and Gewurztraminer wines are showcased.

Anderson Valley Unified School District, a public school district based in Boonville, Mendocino County, California, provides compulsory public primary and secondary education in the entirety of the nearly 20 mile long Anderson Valley, from the Mendocino County line north of Cloverdale to White Gulch, six miles north of Navarro. The district has 2,863 residents and averages a total enrollment of over 400 students.The district operates five schools, all of which are located (along with the district office) in Boonville.

The Con Creek School, in Mendocino County, California near Boonville, California, was built in 1877. The school and another contributing building were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.It is located 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Boonville on State Route 128. The one-room schoolhouse was moved about 20 feet (6.1 m) to a new concrete foundation in 1965, to allow for a road realignment.Also known as the Little Red Schoolhouse, the Con Creek School is a schoolhouse built in the Greek Revival style by J.D. Ball in 1891. Used as a classroom for eight grade levels for 50 years, it was trimmed down to only 7th and 8th grades by 1941. In 1958 its use changed again to that of a kindergarten, and remained so until 1979, when it was donated to the local historical society. The Coastal Mountain Conference or CMC is an athletic conference for secondary schools in Mendocino, Lake, Napa and Sonoma Counties that competes in the North Coast Section of the California Interscholastic Federation. Member schools are currently organized into three leagues (North Central Leagues I, II, and III) based on school size and various other criteria found in the conference's bylaws. League assignments are automatically reevaluated in all even numbered years or at any other time by written request of a member school, provided no other members file an objection. Conference champions from all three leagues advance in each sport to post-season competition in the North Coast Section's Division V bracket, of which the winner gains admission to the Class A state championship tournament. The CMC is a CIF Class A conference (CIF Class A guideline: mostly schools with average enrollment of 600 students or less), though several schools are classified by the CIF as Class B and elect to "play up" in the CMC due to lack of a sufficient number of other similar size schools against which to compete. Similarly Lower Lake High School holds a 2A classification from the CIF but was granted a standing exemption to compete in a Class A conference as to do otherwise would require an excessive amount of travel. Classifications range from 4A for the largest, most historically competitive schools to B for the smallest and least competitive schools.

Pan Am Flight 1104, trip no. 62100, was a Martin M-130 flying boat nicknamed the Philippine Clipper that crashed on the morning of January 21, 1943, in Northern California. The aircraft was operated by Pan American Airways and was carrying ten US Navy personnel from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, to San Francisco, California. The aircraft crashed in poor weather into mountainous terrain about 7 mi (11 km) southwest of Ukiah, California.
